Book Description

May 1, 1999 Worldwide Library Mysteries (Book 312)
A skeleton is found in a cave where escaped slaves used to hide on the Underground Railroad. But clearly the human remains aren't as old as the Confederacy, proving that someone in the community is a killer. As Molly West starts digging into the town's past and present, she discovers something old, something new, and something very deadly. Martin's Press.

Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

Pity Molly West. Not only is she giving the biggest wedding in rural Ohio's Tricounty history--ten bridesmaids on a shoestring budget--but her daughter Amanda announces that she wants to combine her wedding to moneyed Bently Cottingham with a Civil War battle reenactment. On top of that, there's an escaped convict--Luke Siever, who busted out of Lima, obviously headed toward the wife he put in the hospital two years ago--along with rumors that right-wing paramilitaries are smuggling serious weaponry into the normally quiet Tricounty area. The only refuge from all this madness would be the past--if Bonnie Siever, hiding from her husband in the neighborhood caves, hadn't just found a ten-year-old skeleton. There are so many plot lines, in fact--together with so many death threats, bridesmaids, storied ancestors, Civil War anecdotes, and throwaway sociological theories courtesy of Molly's professor husband--that you may wonder if the happy day will ever arrive, or if you'll notice when it does. Never fear. Westfall (Fowl Play, 1996) pulls it all together, orchestrating a memorable confrontation between militiamen and re-enactors en route to a surprisingly well-clued denouement. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. 2.0 out of 5 stars Too many holes..., October 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Mother Of The Bride (Worldwide Library Mysteries) (Paperback)
The author did a great job capturing the culture, history, and legends of Southeastern Ohio, a very distinct and beautiful region of the state. There were simply too many holes in the plot line. Some of the characters were so incredibly stupid...

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, June 2, 1998
By A Customer
In two months, Amanda West is to be married and all she wants from her mother Molly, a director of a meal delivery program in Ohio, is to arrange for a Civil War reenactment ceremony. At the same time, the local sheriff adds pressure on Molly and her spouse Ken when he asks them to hide Amanda's best friend Bonnie from her abusive husband, who has escaped from prison.

Bonnie goes into the tunnels underneath her mother's pre-Civil War mansion and discovers a skeleton. Though most people believe it is the remains of a long forgotten Union soldier, some folks wonder if murder might have occurred more recently. With the reenactment around the corner, Molly tries to solve the mystery of the bones to insure that no other victims surface.

MOTHER OF THE BRIDE, the latest entry in the Molly West series, is an intriguing book because of Patricia Tichenor Westfall's ability to bring alive Appalachian Ohio in both the present and the past eras. The lead character and the support cast add much charm to the story line. The mystery is good though not quite on a level of the sub-plots that add so much authenticity to the novel. Anyone who enjoys an amateur sleuth in a unique setting will want to read this book and Molly's previous story, FOWL PLAY because both are quite entertaining.
