I've studied life in late nineteenth-century orphanages and thought that I had a fairly accurate view of the subject. This tells the story from a totally different point of view. These letters between the administrator of an orphan asylum and the parents who were, for a variety of reasons (mostly poverty), forced to admit their children there are, for the most part, heart-breaking. These letters do, however, provide an amazing view of the incredible love these parents had for their children and the sacrifices they made for the sake of those children. A very educational read.
