Amazing Collection of Candy Recipes,
By Alexis (New Haven CT) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mother Estelle's Easy Homemade Candy Cookbook (Paperback)
If you are looking for the candy recipes your grandmother used, they are probably in this book. They are surprisingly simple and fun.I ordered this book in November to prepare for our first Christmas without my Grandmother's spectacular candies. I do not mean to imply the book turned me into a master candymaker, but I did find recipes that allowed me to continue a cherished family tradition of homemade chocolate pecan fudge, divinity and penuche fudge. My brother commented that our grandmother must have helped me out a bit from up above. I am not known as a great cook, so maybe he was right. Everything turned out perfectly. I highly recommend this.

Long-Lost Recipes,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mother Estelle's Easy Homemade Candy Cookbook (Paperback)
I have been searching for some of these recipes since I lost pages out of my grandmother's recipe collection. They're all here, and I'm making them for my sisters and my father for Christmas this year. My sisters are also getting this book for Christmas presents. They will be absolutely shocked--we had all thought many of these recipes were lost forever. Hilda Cooper is incredible.

...and only recipes. The recipes are great, mind you; old-timey confections that are easy to make for the most part. The directions are well-written, with one page of candy-making tips. However, if you are interested in learning about the science/chemistry of candy making and perhaps seeing a few pictures of finished candies, this is not the book for you. I would recommend "Who Wants Candy?" instead.

One of the recipes that my mother-in-law used to make for my husband when he was a boy was included in the book, I've not seen it anywhere else and was very happy to have it.

When my grandmother and my husband's grandmother died, their recipes went with them for the most part. This cookbook is like having Grandma's candy recipes neatly written and organized in one simple place. It has a couple of neat tips on the first page of the book as well (like how to make your own vanilla).Candy-making is one of my favorite things to do, and I've done it for years; however, I had no idea there were so many fudge recipes! The recipes are simple (make sure to buy a candy thermometer for the best results) and these candies don't require lots of expensive ingredients (many of these recipes require 6 or fewer ingredients). Without knowing it, I gave myself an early Christmas present when I ordered this book!

This author needs to hire a new proof reader. There are so many typos in this book that I don't know if I will dare try making any of the recipes. |
