Book Description

December 4, 1997
"...where the women are strong, the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average." There's a reason all those children in Lake Wobegon are above average. It might be the clean prairie air. It might be the wholesome wheat that's grown by the Norwegian bachelor farmers. And it just might be their strong, good-looking parents.

Garrison Keillor's collection of "News from Lake Wobegon" monologues—all taken from live broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion—is an extended meditation on the joys, sorrows, challenges, and humor of raising children. The tales include "Ronnie and the Winnebago" about a young man, his rock-star girlfriend, and his long struggle to earn his father's understanding; "Love While You Dare" the story of August Johnson, who, after losing his brother in a gambler's prank in Copenhagen, flees to America rather than face his mother--who later comes to visit him in Lake Wobegon; and six more splendid, unforgettable accounts of how, in Keillor's words, "the meek shall inherit the earth, and when we have done all we can with our children, it's time to step back and let them inherit it."

Contents:
Ball Jars, Love While you Dare To, Saturday Morning in The Bon Marche, Family Trip to Yellowstone, The Flood, Bob Anderson's Last Dance, Children Will Break Your Heart, Ronnie and The Winnebago, Carl's Christmas Pageant, The Tombstone

5.0 out of 5 stars Insights into the human condition, August 26, 2002

This review is from: Mother Father Uncle Aunt (Stories from Lake Wobegon) (Audio CD)
I disagree with the earlier reviewer who said something is missing. . .perhaps these stories are not pure comedy, if that is the only "something" you are interested in. This collection is deeper, more thoughtful, the best of all GK's collections for insights into the human condition.

I have many, many Garrison Keillor CDs and this is a new favorite. He's always good, but stongest when taking about family relationships and this CD is all about family relationships -- the good, the bad,and the ugly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure enchantment!, July 18, 2011

Garrison Keillor never fails to entertain, that's a given. But this particular set is my ultimate favorite! If I had only been able to hear Family Trip To Yellowstone, it would have more than worth the price of admission. Keillor's unique genius for bringing you INTO his delightful world of quirky, eccentric, beloved characters is never more evident than when we are seated along with him at age thirteen, on the front steps at six in the morning with his little cardboard suitcase waiting for his aunt and uncle to drive up and whisk him away on his desperately needed respite from his humdrum life. The drive in the station wagon is so vivid, from Uncle Earl's bellowing about every pit stop taking way too long, to Aunt Myrna sitting in the back seat with a board on her lap for making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and tuna fish salad for lunch! Then there's cousin Bobby and him 'bombing mailboxes' or in other words, throwing out gospel tracks along the way hoping to offer salvation to those who find them! Hilarious! Heartwarming! Wonderful! Saturday at the Bon Marche is a hilarious ode to marriage as seen thru the eyes of the older 'biddies' at the beauty parlor as a young bride-to-be gets her hair done the morning of her wedding. Nothing in this set disappoints. I have the cassettes and because they are played over and over again, needed to replace them with cd's. Just a charmer!!
