Marc Almond's Finest Moment- March 1987,
By A Customer
This review is from: Mother Fist & Her Five Daughters (Audio CD)
To anyone to who would like to get a better insight into the musical mind of Marc Almond, buy this disc! The people at Thirsty Ear have done a wonderful job at recent re-issues of Marc's work, and this is no exception. Mother Fist is a perfect blend of new and old, using all kinds of different "un rock" types of instraments. There is a French feel to the disc, and the song writing captures the seedy aspects of people's lives without sounding seedy. Classic tracks are "There is a Bed" and "Saint Judy". "The Champ" is also an awesome tune. Also includes three singles, "Melancholy Rose", "Ruby Red", and "Mother Fist". This should have done better tham it's dismal #41 chart placing on the UK LP charts, and wasn't even originally released in the US. I guess the plus side is that Almond remains a "Best Kept Secret"!

This album still moves me after all of these years. I feel it's his finest. The lyrics transport you to far off places and the music is very eclectic & sophisticated. There isn't a track on the album that I don't like. This is in my top 5 all-time favorite albums. An essential for true Marc Almond fans. Just buy it...

I have been slowly discovering Marc Almond's solo stuff bit by bit....I was not ready for the brilliance of this recording. Who would know that he was capable of such an incredible release. I recommend his autobiography "Tainted Life" - it gives eye popping background to his recordings....I just had to add my 5 stars to this because quite simply it is a great record.
The last cut, "The River" is perhaps a masterpiece. The whole experience is lush and gorgeous - you don't even need a cocktail or a joint to fly away with this joyeaux collection of real, true music. THANK YOU MARC! I LOVE YOU!

Marc's BEST!,

Anyone who knows Marc Almond already has this album. If you're interested in hearing more from an incredible songwriter and lyricist, this is the album to buy.For fourteen years and many shifts in my musical tastes, Mother Fist and Her Five Daughters has remained a favorite. The music is unexpectedly brilliant and the lyrics simultaneously lead you to a darker side of life while making you feel better and more inspired than you've felt in quite a while. Marc made some exceptional music with the Willing Sinners and the Mamba's in the late 80's. It's some of the best music from that time. Sometimes hard to find and most often a bit expensive, it is worth every dime. Just listen to "There is a Bed", "Saint Judy", "Champ", and "Mr. Sad" and you'll know that your in for a brilliant musical journey. Mother will stay with you forever once you've been introduced. Many thanks to Marc for this accomplishment.

I'm trying to figure out why this was never released stateside. Besides "Ruby Red" it had a slew of other possible singles just begging to hit the airwaves. Maybe it was too British? Maybe it was too European? Maybe it was too perverse? Marc could have courted the same crossover success that Petter Murphy did with something like "Melancholy Rose", which, in my opinion, pulses on with the same lively energy of Roxy Music's "Prairie Rose". A song like "Angel In Her Kiss" is what perfect pop is made of. Mother Fist is such a satisfying album because not a second is wasted and each track is a new idea. I could easily picture it being played on American college rock radio of the mid-to-late 80's as it goes beyond its dark, deviant, Euro-underground roots of cabaret and Jean Genet. It swaggers confidently with the sheen of pop perfection. Oh, what could have been! A definite must.
