Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Trying to get baby mouse to go to sleep, Mrs. Mouse enlists the help of her friends in response to his cries of "Mother, mother, I want another," thinking he wants another mother, until he tells her he wants another kiss. "Polushkin's comedy of errors accelerates into a whirlwind of crises," PW said, "and the richly hued paintings burst with life, humor and imaginative touches."

From School Library Journal

PreS–A newly illustrated edition of a charming bedtime story first published in 1976, with equally charming pictures that emphasize the silliness and coziness of the text. When Mother Mouse puts her child to bed, she kisses him good night. But he starts to cry, declaring, "I want another, Mother." She assumes he wants another mother, and the story continues from there as she enlists various animals to be his other mother (even as she looks rather stricken at the prospect). A cumulative, satisfyingly repetitive story, this also offers young children a chance to get the joke well before the adult does. Goodell's colorful paintings are a delight, adding humor, emotion, and liveliness. Since this was first published, there has been an overabundance of sweet bedtime stories. This one is not especially distinctive, but is certainly good fun. All but the smallest collections will want to consider adding it to their supply of books designed to end the day with a smile (and a kiss, of course).–Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL

My 2 year old loves this book. The artwork is wonderful, the animals are so beautifully drawn and dressed and the story is a delight! It's repititious, which is important for young readers and the story is so endearing. It gives you the "warm fuzzies" every time you read it.

In this book, mother mouse is getting her son off to bed and kisses him goodnight. He tells her he wants another, mother and she takes that to mean he wants another mom. What he really wants is another kiss but she scurries off to find another mother for him. Mother mouse finds a mother duck, a mother frog, a mother pig, and a mother donkey and all of them kiss little mouse but poor baby mouse doesn't want another mother! He is finally able to tell his mother that all he wants is another kiss! So she gives him two and tucks him into bed.

I loved this book and so did my 2 year old. The pictures are so detailed and darling. This is one to keep on your list of must-haves.

This was my favorite book as a child. My mom and I have been trying to find this book for nearly 10 years now. I found it! This is truely the most memorable children's book I ever had. It is the best book you can read to your child!! It is definitely up there in the ranks of Runaway Bunny and Love you Forever!!

As a tiny little girl, my mom used to read this to me. (Until I finally memeorized it by myself!) I don't know if she remembers it, but I sure do. It was one of my favorite books. And now that I have a little boy, I want him to know this sweet story as well.

I have two daughters, 21 & 17. The 21 yr. old wanted this book for her birthday present. The story is so touching that it willremembered for years after it is read. Baby Mouse is so charming in his request for another kiss. His Mother tries to please him but he finally gets enough of the parade of animal mothers! I've shared this story by heart with the children when I teach. My daughters have enjoyed reading this book as young children. They still have fond memories of the pictures and the words from past readings!!

As a child my mother read this book to me and it became my favorite. It really caught my imagination. Infact the book that my mother owns has been read so many times that it is literally falling apart. She in a kindergarten teacher who reads the book to her class every year and the kids love it. It is a shame that It is not available at the moment because it is a great book.

I read this book over and over to my son when he was small. He wanted to hear it every night. Our copy of it is now soft and worn and I would like a new one. I am very sorry that it is not available. I am a school librarian and I would also love a copy for my library so a whole new group of children could enjoy it. It is a wonderful book.

This book was very special to my son and me. I want to purchase it again and give it to him to have for his children. When we talk about special memories in his childhood, this book has been mentioned more than once.
