Welldon explores why the quality of their bodies is fundamental to women's psychology; how this may lead to self-mutilation; and how such perverse behavior may also be aimed at objects which women see as their own creations, specifically their babies. The potential causes and consequences of these conditions, including maternal and paternal incest and its frequent aftermath, prostitution, are also discussed.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Motherhood confers immense powers, whick some women misuse because of their own emotional problems and the social expectations placed upon them. In these unfortunate cases, mothers may batter, commit incest, or prevent their children from understanding or accepting their core gender-identity. Estela Welldon believes that mothers often see their children as extensions of themselves, and that this type of mistreatment is a form of self-inflicted wound. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars MOTHERS AND POTENTIAL MOTHERS READ THIS BOOK!, May 23, 2002
By A Customer
I found this book fascinating. Written by a Pshychotherapist who has obviously had much experience in dealing with "hard case" personnas, it shows the most intriguing, almost disturbing, conclusions on the way some mothers and their kin relate and behave. Extreme cases are always good for then extrapolating and identifying more subtle traits in normal everyday people, including ourselves! I must say that it made me get into an "auto-therapy" mood while reading it... I was engulfed by this book, which has been written with minimized technical terms, making it of easy access to non-experts as myself.
