Mother Night is a powerful score. It will move and haunt you. Michael Convertino is painter of music and you will drawn into his land and mindscapes. Find his scores. He is a marvel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stealing?, April 4, 2006

Hey Kevin-- I had a composition professor who had a Stravinsky quotation on his door: "good composers borrow; great composers steal!"

I'll be honest here, I don't have the liner notes to this CD anymore... but I'm a big Part fan. He's been rescoring is own music for decades (try finding all the manifestations of Fratres!). I guess I'm not convinced that those tracks aren't just straight Arvo at his finest: Fratres, Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, the two Spiegels. It doesn't sound to me like Michael Convertino re-orchestrated the 4-seasons' Allego either... But why is Vivaldi mentioned and Part not?

It also wouldn't be the first time a contemporary composer didn't get credit for his work. Ligeti found out he had scored 2001-A Space Odyssey when he decided to take a date to the movies and heard it! (Kubrick made it up to him, no worries.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fans of Arvo Part may love it or hate it, September 3, 2004

Stravinsky was accused of stealing music from Pergolesi when he scored Pulcinella. He retorted he would only "steal" music he dearly loved. I think this is the case between Convertino and composer Arvo Part. Two works (opening and closing) take Part's "Spiegel Im Spiegel" (mirror in mirror) and Convertino-ize it. Some Part fans will love it and some will despise it. I happen to love it. As austere as the original piece is (scored only for piano and violin) Convertino makes it lush and heart-rending. If you're a purist don't buy this. If you are not, prepare yourself for an adventure.
