Book Description

March 1, 2002
Use your Mother Power to make a difference.

Dr. Jacqueline Hornor Plumez became inspired by the power of women when vacationing in Argentina. There she learned about the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo-women who risked their lives by protesting the kidnapping, torture and murder of their children by their country's brutal junta. She started to investigate women throughout the world who gained economic, political and moral power by using their natural maternal instincts.

Through her research and in-depth interviews with over 50 women from all walks of life, Dr. Plumez realized that there is a new, but as yet undiscovered, movement around the world: Mother Power. Mother Power is changing society today, just as women's liberation changed it a few decades ago. In story after story, she shows how mothers have become powerful forces for justice and fairness, and have dramatically changed the world in which we live. Along the way, she offers prescriptive suggestions on how women can enhance and use their own inherent Mother Power.

The reader will meet women who have used Mother Power to successfully challenge criminals from neighborhood drug dealers to corporate polluters; mothers who have made the practice of law, politics, science and medicine more humane, caring and effective; and mothers who have used their maternal skills to gain respect in all areas of the arts. Readers will see how women have used maternal management to create their own successful businesses and non-profit organizations that benefit society. The most exciting thing Dr. Plumez learned is that even women without income, education or other traditional sources of influence can use Mother Power to achieve their goals.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Plumez, a psychologist and career counselor, admits that until a few years ago, she would have called "mother power" an oxymoron. Like many, she grew up watching fathers wield power, using their strength to often bend, if not break, the wills of the women in their lives, discouraging them from engaging in activities where they would find strength, courage and purpose. It wasn't until she was vacationing in Argentina as an adult that she saw mother power at work, among a group of uneducated, loosely organized, grieving women, the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo. Their weekly rallies protesting the "disappearance" of their sons, daughters and husbands eventually led to the collapse of the corrupt government in 1983. Plumez fills her meandering book with stories of like-minded women who chose not to suffer silently, from women who work for peace in Northern Ireland to a teacher in the South Bronx who has curbed a longtime local epidemic of fighting between students. The usual suspects are here (e.g., Mothers Against Drunk Driving), along with some lesser-known mother heroes, like Daryl Roth, a playwright who nurtures actors as if they were her own family. The psychologist in Plumez reminds readers of the skill most little girls acquire "tend and befriend" which replaces the "fight or flight" mindset adopted by many boys. This feminine trait manifests in her stories. But because of its breadth (Plumez covers everything from sex education to corporate polluters and racial strife), the book's central theme is hard to grasp. Part homage to strong women, part self-help guide to taking control, this work inspires. Agent, Loretta Barrett.

From Booklist

Plumez, a psychologist, writer, and mother, examines the often unrealized powers possessed by women with strong maternal instincts, whether or not they are biological mothers. She contrasts mother power with women power, the difference being an altruistic, selfless love. In three sections, she explores what mothers are, what they do, and what they need. Plumez profiles a variety of women faced with a variety of problems and issues: Argentine mothers of the "disappeared" tenaciously protesting the brutality of the junta, Mothers against Drunk Drivers, Russian mothers who marched to the war zones of Chechnya to bring home their sons, and women who have helped in peace negotiations in the conflicts in Northern Ireland, Israel, and Lebanon. Women have organized grassroots movements that have brought down corrupt governments, forced cleanup of toxic waste, and routed gangs from neighborhoods. Plumez notes that these women have all derived power from their credibility as mothers. At the end of each chapter, Plumez poses questions and issues for women to consider in evaluating how to use their mother power. Vanessa Bush

5.0 out of 5 stars Mother Power - Even if you already believe we are wonderful!, March 3, 2002

This review is from: Mother Power: Discover the difference that women have made all over the world (Paperback)
Finally, a book that will help women to find (and use) the strength within them, whether they be running a household or mananging a corporation. With an effective combination of hard fact and psychological insight, Plumez takes the reader on an eye-opening journey of astonishing accomplishments of 'ordinary' women and helps us to believe that there is a wellspring of mother power within us all. As a mother and a psychologist, I was impressed with how well Plumez translates her obviously well researched material into practical 'how-to's' about how to find, develop, and use our maternal strength. I loved the book and bought ten copies to give to friends - for a special celebration of Mother's Day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring collection of factual stories, February 26, 2003
This review is from: Mother Power: Discover the difference that women have made all over the world (Paperback)
In "Mother Power" author Jacqueline Plumez builds a convincing case that there is a change occurring around the world as women discover their real power. Looking at factual events that have occurred and are still occurring she takes us through example after example of women coming together to change their world. Examples from the book include the mothers who organized in Argentina to stop the disappearance of their children when the police, political system, and even the church would do nothing. Or the mothers that organized to demonstrate against the violence in Northern Ireland and the reduction in violence that resulted. Or the group of mothers in Larchmont, New York who started an organization to help with the domestic needs of the terminally ill.

Mother power does not only occur on such large scales creating groups and organizations to change the world, but also on much smaller scales. The author demonstrates this with stories such as the mother whose son wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning novel "A Confederacy of Dunces". Her son was unsuccessful at getting it published and when she reread it after his death she decided that it should be published. Her story of how she continued after multiple rejections and dead ends shows how her belief in her son's novel carried her through to finally getting it published.

This book is a great collection of factual stories that show how women and the instincts and qualities of motherhood are changing the world, sometimes one person at a time, sometimes whole nations at a time. "Mother Power" is a highly recommended read.
