3.0 out of 5 stars Getting faith right when life goes wrong., April 22, 2005
This review is from: Mother of Prevention (Life, Faith & Getting It Right #4) (Steeple Hill Cafe) (Paperback)
That was the problem Kate Madison suddenly faced. One minute she is living the good life with a husband and two daughters in Oklahoma City, the next her life is ripped apart when her fire-fighter husband is killed on the job.

Not only does Kate have to struggle with her grief, she also battles a multitude of fears and the prospect of bringing up her daughters on her own. Things only get worse when she is told she should no long fly, and crucial part of the job she loves.

Desperate times bring desperate measures. Kate uproots her family and moves to San Francisco for a fresh start. It's not long before she makes a friend of her bubbling neighbor, Mazi. But things don't go as well as she had hoped and she soon realizes she's left one important thing out of her newly calculated life.

Mother of Prevention is a moving story of a young mother's walk through grief. The only disappointment I had was the fact that the back cover copy didn't entirely match the contents of the book. One element mentioned never eventuated in the storyline and left me disappointed. Not being a great reader of either first person narrative or Mom's lit, it took me a while to get into the book, but if you're looking for a light read with a well threaded theme of the importance of faith, then you should enjoy this story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring, March 3, 2005
By
This review is from: Mother of Prevention (Life, Faith & Getting It Right #4) (Steeple Hill Cafe) (Paperback)
I bought this book because it looked like a good chick lit read.

The basic premise is that a 30-something with two young perfect, perfect daughters has a happy, happy life until her wonderful and perfect husband has the nerve to die in a fire (he is a firefighter).

While I am overdoing it on the description, this book had the feel of overkill in almost every aspect of the storyline.

Once our main character realizes that her husband has died, she decides to move her family to San Francisco (from Oklahoma). She hasn't been there two minutes and yet insists on buying a home. She of course, finds the "perfect" home but can't afford it - in rides the perfect real estate agent who finds her a loving home. However, surprisingly not all is on the up and up as she will soon find out. (This turns out to be the only twist in this predictable story).

Even her relationship with the next door neighboor (female) felt tedious to me. Our main character "uses" the neighbors loneliness and makes her an instant babysitter to two somewhat annoying and quite bratty kids.

This book was meant to be written as a heartwarming story of a suddenly single mother who needs to venture forth. But it comes off as making the main character selfish and the whole storyline boring.

This is definitely NOT chick lit material. It should be considered more as general fiction.

Even reading my review of this book bores me. This is just basically too boring for more words - so I will stop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent depiction of loss of faith and redemption, June 20, 2006
This review is from: Mother of Prevention (Life, Faith & Getting It Right #4) (Steeple Hill Cafe) (Paperback)
Mother of Prevention by Lori Copeland surprised me, as I think it does many readers. The cover and promotion make this book look like light inspirational chick-lit, but the topics it handles are much deeper, and it takes the reader on a meaningful journey. Kate Madison's life is perfect: perfect job, kids, husband, home, etc until her firefighter husband is killed in the line of duty and everything Kate thought she could rely on, including God, seems to be in chaos. Kate has to face her fears of being alone as well as face the fact that her life will not be the way she imagined it to be. Kate's fears start spilling over onto her daughters making them frightened and dependent as well. Copeland does an excellent job of handling Kate's fears and her struggles with the Lord. Lots of us have turned our backs on the Lord when we feel that He has let us down, and we all have to learn that He's not the one who walks away; we do. Kate has a lot of lessons to learn throughout this novel, and not everything is tied up neatly when the story ends. There are a few laughs in this book and lots of great characters, but don't read this expecting chick-lit, read this expecting to be moved in your faith.

4.0 out of 5 stars good grief, June 19, 2006
This review is from: Mother of Prevention (Life, Faith & Getting It Right #4) (Steeple Hill Cafe) (Paperback)
This is the story of a Kate Madison, wife and mother, who sets out for San Francisco after the tragic loss of her husband. A woman who is preoccupied with fears must learn to set them aside for the sake of her two daughters. She wonders how she will go on and survive with out her husband.

This story has many touching moments of grief where Kate can't take it anymore, yet marches on. The author does a wonderful job of showing how easy it is to be consumed with grief. Kate gets so bogged down with surviving and helping her girls survive that she begins to think the world revolves squarely around her. It was nice to see the reality of grief instead of supermom quickly moving on and conquering the world.

The author also does a wonderful job of exibiting Kate's relationship with God. The honest anger Kate has for losing her husband/best friend. The feelings of abandonment. The recognition Kate shows when she sees God working in her life. The blessings she credits God with even in this time of grief.

Lastly, let's not forget that laughter is the best medicine. Kate has much adapting to do in her new role. With these changes come many blunders. Kate is able to laugh at her situation and move on. Her children's antics at time test her limits. Sometimes they force her to cry but many times she is forced to laugh. I am sure you will find the same to be true as you read this wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Book, March 9, 2005
This review is from: Mother of Prevention (Life, Faith & Getting It Right #4) (Steeple Hill Cafe) (Paperback)
"Mother of Prevention", was a sweet book which shows the main character's changing emotions as she goes through her husband's death; a much needed move from Oklahoma; and the transitioning into a new life. Finding that her new neighbors are more than willing to lend a hand, makes her transition easier-at least for awhile.

I recommend it to anyone who loves a great fiction book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Pathetic!, January 15, 2006
This review is from: Mother of Prevention (Life, Faith & Getting It Right #4) (Steeple Hill Cafe) (Paperback)
Very disappointing! Poorly written, poorly edited. This is definitely NOT what I had hoped for!
Not worthy of being called "CHICK LIT." More suitable to be part of the LoveInspired Line.
This book gives the feeling of having been written very quickly, bearly looked over and published. More attention is given to the front cover than to the content of the book.
I am not very impressed with the new Steeple Hill Cafe line so far, it just seems like a re-vamp of the cheap LoveInspired line (which I do not care for!!!).

Did I say I was disappointed??? This one is going straight to paperbackswap.com

1.0 out of 5 stars POOR!!!, January 11, 2006
By
This review is from: Mother of Prevention (Life, Faith & Getting It Right #4) (Steeple Hill Cafe) (Paperback)
This was a great disappointment! I have enjoyed several of Copeland's previous books, and other Steeple Hill Cafe books, but this one was a HUGE let down.
This book gives the impression of being written in a few days, thrown together, not really thought out. There are several minor details that were off---did an editor actually read the book? In the first few chapters Kate talks about lighting her oven and putting frozen fish fingers in to cook. A few hours later one of her daughters asks her something and Kate responds "after we eat supper?" What kind of fish sticks take hours to bake?
Another thing that just did not make sense was that Kate would go on day-long trips to teach cosmetology type things. Why in the world if she was only going to be gone for one day is she shown fretting and going nuts packing and trying to find wrinkle free clothes to take with her???? You don't need to do all this for a day-trip...
I have a 5 and 7 year old (same as the protagonist has in the book) and some of the behaviors these girls are described with just don't mesh with these ages. And also, what recently widowed woman would take her two young daughters along with her to house hunt in San Francisco...not once, but twice!!! Sorry, I don't fall for that one.
As I said before, very disappointed. Reminds me of the cheaper LoveInspired books...I hope Steeple Hill Cafe does better enxt time...

My 2 cents

Lori Copeland has done it again...written a book that takes the reader on a fun, and entertaining journey. With her smart humor Lori takes us on an emotional ride with a story that is touching, and inspiring.

I would highly recommend Mother of Prevention to anyone looking for a great read.
