5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden music found, July 7, 2003

This review is from: Dear Mother, I've Come Home to Die Quickstep & Other Favorites of the Band of the 19th Virginia Heavy Artillery (Audio CD)
I've only lately become interested in items regarding the Civil War. I, frankly, was surprised and delighted to find this album which seems to epitomize much of how the South felt at the time.

Music generally will give very broad hints about various eras and the mood at that time.

This album with it's superbly played and chosen tunes illustrates this extremly well. The narrative gives the album a feel that is missing in others of this type.

While this is a specialized type of music, anyone who has any interest in Civil War elements would surely finds this to be a plus in any collection whether one is interested from a Northern or Southern viewpoint.

I would hope that there might be another album or two of this type that would include music from the North.

It is clear that the music on this CD is re-created by individuals who care enough to get it right. I was given a copy as a gift by a friend who shares my interest in the Civil War. I think that everything about it is EXCELLENT. You must buy this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unusual Civil War quickstep treat, April 20, 2003

This review is from: Dear Mother, I've Come Home to Die Quickstep & Other Favorites of the Band of the 19th Virginia Heavy Artillery (Audio CD)
Here is a CD full of lighthearted quicksteps of the kind used to keep morale up within the ranks of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. There are about 20 tunes, many with sung verses, taken from the same original band book; it was reportedly unusual for such books to include parts for singers. Utah's 'The Crestmark Military Btass Band and Singers' give musical and lusty renditions, the players using antiques, reproductions, and other older instruments. A narrator intones brief interludes at several points. This is a must for any Civil War enthusiast.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real find!, April 17, 2003
This review is from: Dear Mother, I've Come Home to Die Quickstep & Other Favorites of the Band of the 19th Virginia Heavy Artillery (Audio CD)
There are precious few recordings available of the military music of the Civil War, and none that I know of with vocals accompanied by regimental brass. An important addition to the musical heritage of the era.

This review is from: Dear Mother, I've Come Home to Die Quickstep & Other Favorites of the Band of the 19th Virginia Heavy Artillery (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful CD, full of some great, and unique quicksteps. Some favorites are present on the disc as well, as some new ones to myself. The selections come directly from the 19th Virginia's books! A buddy and I recently listened to this CD on the way home from a civil war reenactment, and we agreed that the music was great, and it was made even better by the fact that every other song a narrator came up to describe the upcoming or past song.
