From Booklist

(It is Booklist policy that a book written by a regular contributor receive a brief descriptive announcement rather than a recommending review.)

A survey of myths from more than a dozen cultures reveals that the sun has been mythologically cast in feminine form as mother, shaman, sister, and lover. The cultures discussed include those of the Japanese, Koreans, Native Australians, Native Americans, Balts and Scandinavians, Irish, and Egyptians. 5.0 out of 5 stars sun goddesses rediscovered, October 23, 2003

This is a delightful book full of fascinating sdtories about the sun goddesses of the world. it is a perfect book to read as an antidote to all those authors who insist tiresomely on the male sun/ female moon stereotype. Fascinating stories beautifuly told, a pleasure to read from beginning to end.Strange how the idea of sun goddesses seems to frighten a lot of people especially feminist spirituality types, I wonder why?

5.0 out of 5 stars interesting and inspiring, November 2, 1998
By A Customer
Monaghan provides an in-depth and cross-cultural exploration of a subject often forcibly neglected by Western study. A good read for anyone interested in non-traditional (i.e., strictly Hellenic and Christian) mythology.
