Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up-Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhius to a relatively affluent, Albanian-speaking Catholic family in a part of Eastern Europe then controlled by Turkish-speaking Serbs, Mother Teresa was surrounded by various religious and political ideas and carefully reared by her mother in a tradition of tolerance and concern for others. At 18, she decided to become a teaching nun in India. Teaching at the Loreto convent school in Calcutta still did not put her close enough to her vision of service, so after some difficulty she received permission to live among the poor and to help them. She continued to attract followers and money to carry on the work. While simply worded and detailed, Wellman's prose seems dutiful and pedestrian, and much of the text is written in undocumented dialogue. Although the book relates the facts of life in India, readers don't really sense it. There is only the merest splash of color about Mother Teresa's life. Sadly, there are no illustrations. By contrast, William J. Jacobs's Mother Teresa (Millbrook, 1991) is short, evocative, and profusely illustrated, and much more likely to appeal to casual perusers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mother Teresa, January 10, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Mother Teresa: Missionary of Charity (Heroes of the Faith (Barbour Paperback)) (Paperback)

This biography on Mother Teresa is fantastic. As you read the book you became close to Mother Teresa. This book also was very descriptive, pictures were painted in your mind of the places she visited and lived. The author did not limit themselves to just the life of Mother Teresa, but also kept the reader informed on what was going on around her.

The book begins in her early childhood, and gives many examples of how saintly she was, even as a young girl. She would do her siblings chores, just to be kind. Mother Teresa's family was well off, and had many visitors to the home, normally the less fortunate. Mother Teresa often went to help the sick poor regain strength, on these visits Mother Teresa would often help heal the sick. When she first received her calling to become a nun she told her mother, who was very worried to begin with, but quickly allowed her gifted daughter to serve. When she went to India and decided not to live in her original convent but to create her own, to serve the poorest of the poor, this she did bravely, many things were said and done to her, but she persisted, still serving those who were so unjust to her.

When Mother Teresa begins her new convent the author describes how little the sisters owned and blanket and a bucket were there only worldly possessions. Mother Teresa was a teacher to the children whose parents could not afford school. Vivid descriptions are given of the out door school, and the children as well, how their behavior changed for the better. The sisters had a busy day. They had to make time for prayer, helping the poor, and rest to keep physically and mentally strong, as well as meals and more prayer.

This book, is not just a biography on Mother Teresa, but the time in which she lived, Gandhi's peaceful protests and his murder were also included. The changing of Popes, the Second World War, and every day life in different countries were included. This book also includes letter and prayers Mother Teresa her self wrote, and their responses.

I really liked this book, the above reasons are just a few things I liked about it. Recommend it to anyone who would like to learn more about mother Teresa.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative and Interesting, October 24, 2001
This review is from: Mother Teresa: Missionary of Charity (Heroes of the Faith (Barbour Paperback)) (Paperback)
This book is amazing! I had no idea that Mother Teresa's work was so wide spread.

Mother Teresa is truly an inspiration. Her life and work and heart have touched me through this book. I learned so much about her and even more about true faith, reliance on God and what a servants heart really is.

This book is very thorough, yet it is not dry in the least. The book is well written and interesting as well.

I really enjoyed this volume in the Heroes of Faith series and I plan to read more in this series. I highly recommend this book. It is quick reading, though I feel very informed about Mother Teresa and like I know her a bit now.

Mother Teresa's story is a great illustration of the power of God tied up in a tiny woman truly lived the words of Christ in actions full of faith moving mountains. The clout of God and the details of Mother Teresa's service is a magnificent gift and inspiration. This book is also a fast and easy. There are many authors on Mother Teresa's life- I highly recommend this because it is detailed enough to give the intense drama of her life, a great over view- and easy enough that less driven people can get through it fast. I have actually given this book as a gift a few times, a great return for time invested.
