From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5AAgnes Bojaxhiu was the youngest child in a warm, caring Catholic family. This photo-essay covers her life from her childhood in Albania to her death in 1997. The misnamed subtitle is explained in the final chapter: no one knows if she'll officially be declared a saint of the Catholic Church. Each chapter consists of a double-page spread, complete with several clear, large photographs (most in color) and sideboxes of information and quotes. Many of the photo captions merely summarize or repeat facts already mentioned in the text. There are no maps or source notes for direct quotes. However, the information provided is accurate and useful. This book complements Mildred Pond's Mother Teresa (Chelsea House, 1991) and updates Vanora Leigh's Mother Teresa (Bookwright Press, 1986; o.p.). An accessible choice that may create interest in this inspiring woman.AAnne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI

Gr. 4^-7. At 12, the young Albanian Agnes Bojaxhiu first "heard the call" from God to become a nun. Her family had always been very religious, and it was her dream to work as a missionary in India. She chose the religious name Teresa in honor of St. Therese of Lisieux. After 17 years of teaching in India, Sister Teresa heard another call--that she must help the poor by living among them. For the rest of her life, she devoted herself to finding a way to address not only short-term needs but also long-term solutions to the poverty rampant in India and around the world. She was given permission by the pope to start a new order of nuns called the Missionaries of Charity, and as head of the order, she became known as Mother Teresa. With a simple text, many photos that provide historical and social context, and sidebar quotes about Mother Teresa, this biography is engaging; her story itself is well written and inspirational.
