5.0 out of 5 stars The Wright Comeback CD, June 26, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Mother Wit (Audio CD)
With the ever changing shifts in music, Betty Wright experienced a huge lull in her career in the early to mid 80s. However, in 1988, she again took center stage, taking the industry by storm. Wright exceeded in teaching all the R&B diva wanna-beez (i.e., Paula Abdul, Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson) how real Soul music was suppose to sound with "Mother Wit".

From beginning to end, this CD is fantastic. Arguably the best effort of her entire career (with 1989's "4U2NJOY" coming in a close second), Betty has simply never sounded better. The lyrics are clever, witty and wise and are delivered with sheer exuberance. With huge singles like "After the Pain" and "No Pain, No Gain", it was such a joy to hear Betty all over the radio once again. She proved you can't keep a good woman down.

If you only buy one Betty Wright CD, this should be the one! A pure listening delight.

I love Betty Wright. As a child I listen to the songs of her, gladys, patti, and all of the great ones. As an adult I appreciate the words..... NO Pain No Gain.... "In order to get something, you gotta give something In order to be something you gotta go through something" What more can you say after that.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Shot from the hip...., March 27, 2000
This review is from: Mother Wit (Audio CD)
Ok, you may know Betty from "Clean up Woman" or "Tonight is The Night" days. Years later--and this is a recurrent theme I generally discuss--she put out a monster soul single "No Pain, No Gain" which found it's place in hip-hop saturated urban radio, hence, among the pantheons of classic tunes that will always get a positive response whenever it is played--'cause it's real. "Mother Wit" also has the great "After the Pain" which also features some of Wright's gospel-tinged vocals. This is totally hard to find, totally satisfying. Get it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars offerings from a true genius, November 24, 2007
This review is from: Mother Wit (Audio CD)
if i could take one of her albums that would represent the true underrated genius and vocal ability of one of the most soulful divas in the industry, it would be this album and this artist. ms. b never fully got the props she deserves, the expression, the pain, the joy and THE VOCAL RANGE of this true old school sound that others only attempt to imitate but never duplicate, ms wright stands alone!!! perfection.

Betty Wright enjoyed a career revival thanks to such hits as "No Pain, No Gain" and "After The Pain". With this album, Betty proved that you could still create and record REAL soul music and find success with it. The only songs I did not like were "Ms. Time" and "Miami Groove" --the rest of the album, however, is nothing short of superb.
