I love this album and this band,
By Trey Barclay (Seattle, Wa United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mother'S Finest Live (Audio CD)
I saw Mother's Finest back in 1979 (the tour of this album) opening for Humble Pie and Angel in Beaumont Texas, and as good as the headliners were, it was Mother's Finest that stole the show. When they opened with their much improved cover of the Jefferson Airplane classic "Somebody to Love" the audience was blown away. So, naturally I sprinted to the record store to buy the lp. I'm thrilled to see it's available on cd and sounds as good as ever. What a great band!! "LIVE" is a heavy rock/funk album with great rock guitar leads, thundering double base drumming (BB Queen indeed), grooving heavy bass and keyboards. The soulful vocals soar featuring diva Joyce Kennedy and Glenn Murdock. All their original songs are excellent but their funky version of "Magic Carpet Ride" has to be heard to be believed. What a great band, what a great album. Thank you Mother's Finest for believing a mixed-race alchemy of music strengths and styles (hard rock drums and guitars "white"; funky bass, keyboards vocals "African-American") could work so beautifully. I say BUY IT even if you've never heard it before. And if you currently own it in your-gathering-dust-vinyl-collection, get it again on cd so you can blow out the speakers on your car sterio when you crank it up!!!

Exciting, rocking, vibrating - a masterpiece,
By V-Lee (Wien) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mother'S Finest Live (Audio CD)
The potential of the first black rock band in history was easily perceptible after the release of their self-titled debut-album. In 1979, after 3 studio recordings, they released what they could best: a live album which - in terms of energy, perfectionism and virtuosity (listen to the voice of Joyce!)- could not have been any better. Groovin' Rock-songs that made evrybody dance, combined with some real hitting soul-ballads.This is the best live album by any black artist, that was ever captured. They tried to re-do this in 1991 with their album "Subluxation", but with the lack of keyboard-genius B.B.Queen, it became rougher and more stompin'. 'Mother's Finest Live!' is a must in every record collection, and after having first listened to it you will say, "Oh yes, 'Niggiz CAN sing Rock'n'Roll!'".
