I love this album and this band,

I saw Mother's Finest back in 1979 (the tour of this album) opening for Humble Pie and Angel in Beaumont Texas, and as good as the headliners were, it was Mother's Finest that stole the show. When they opened with their much improved cover of the Jefferson Airplane classic "Somebody to Love" the audience was blown away. So, naturally I sprinted to the record store to buy the lp. I'm thrilled to see it's available on cd and sounds as good as ever. What a great band!! "LIVE" is a heavy rock/funk album with great rock guitar leads, thundering double base drumming (BB Queen indeed), grooving heavy bass and keyboards. The soulful vocals soar featuring diva Joyce Kennedy and Glenn Murdock. All their original songs are excellent but their funky version of "Magic Carpet Ride" has to be heard to be believed. What a great band, what a great album. Thank you Mother's Finest for believing a mixed-race alchemy of music strengths and styles (hard rock drums and guitars "white"; funky bass, keyboards vocals "African-American") could work so beautifully. I say BUY IT even if you've never heard it before. And if you currently own it in your-gathering-dust-vinyl-collection, get it again on cd so you can blow out the speakers on your car sterio when you crank it up!!!

Exciting, rocking, vibrating - a masterpiece,

The potential of the first black rock band in history was easily perceptible after the release of their self-titled debut-album. In 1979, after 3 studio recordings, they released what they could best: a live album which - in terms of energy, perfectionism and virtuosity (listen to the voice of Joyce!)- could not have been any better. Groovin' Rock-songs that made evrybody dance, combined with some real hitting soul-ballads.This is the best live album by any black artist, that was ever captured. They tried to re-do this in 1991 with their album "Subluxation", but with the lack of keyboard-genius B.B.Queen, it became rougher and more stompin'. 'Mother's Finest Live!' is a must in every record collection, and after having first listened to it you will say, "Oh yes, 'Niggiz CAN sing Rock'n'Roll!'".

Nothing can compare to the shocking beautiful voice of Joyce "Baby Jean" Kennedy - with exception of Kathi McDonald, who is my absolute favorite vocalist (But Kathi is a Blues Lady and Joyce a Funk Rock Babe, so you really can't compare the two).
And Wyzard aka Jerry Seay is a grand-master on the bass guitar. This album is fabulous. Period. And in my opinion Joyce and Jerry make Mother's Finest what they are: The greatest Funk Rock band ever! There is only one thing better than this album: to actually see Mother's Finest live on stage. If you like it funky with a driving beat and a heavy bass, if you like it hard, and appreciate a great powerful voice with a wide range like Joyce Kennedy, this album is for you. PLAY IT LOUD! Saw MF around the time of this live album release. Thought they were a great little band, shame they never hit the big time. The live show was MF at their best though I also enjoy several of their studio releases. Nice blend of rock and roll with a funk twist in my opinion....

Ok, I usually do not mention other reviews, but that guy below is just dead wrong, he probably reviewed one of the Take That Cds he had in his player. Mother's Finest is, hands down, the greatest funk-rock band ever to play the genre, and trust me, I know what I'm talking about. With all the success I've had in that music, MF remains the only band I have ever been AFRAID OF.
OK, 4 stars because this disc is lacking certian songs, but that was probably David Krebs fault. They have a new live Cd out that is more complete, have not heard the production quality. Get this disc if for nothing else "BB Queen gonna help right here...." You should hear them with two guitars. Buy this if you are real and feel that deep down Southern greasy funk/soul/rock, otherwise, keep posing.............

Heavy Funk-Rock,

I grew up on this beat. I loved MF (and still do), being only in my early teens in Germany - of all places. MF was BIG in Germany back then. Although I know tons of super-heavy funk and rock beats now, few come close to the real MF thing. They were certainly way ahead of their time; buy this album if you want tight super heavy funk rock. As P-Funk George Clinton says: Funk is like a fine wine: it get's better as it gets older. Peace and Funk.

This is very possibly THE worst album i have ever listened to .
I was expecting powerful Funk rock , somewhere along the lines of Funkadelic but heavier. And i blame the reviewers who praised it so highly as just that. Its terrible, over here in the UK this would be saturday morning POP music. I have tried hard to find something anywhere near Funkadelic or similar, alas in vain. I love the combination of Funk Rock but this aint it at all , not even close. These people should give up . Also the biggest laugh is some jerk reviewer( who knows ) thinks its good , i despair of you yankee chappies i mean you know very little of what rock is all about . Just leave it to us . |
