Book Description

August 1997
This is a moving reflection on learning the tough spiritual lessons of motherhood. Ellyn Sanna draws from personal anecdotes as well as from a wide range of male and female Christian saints and writers, making the book personal yet truly universal at the same time.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Sanna draws on the metaphor of sunshine and shadows to reflect on the paradoxes of motherhood: the moments of illumination and darkness, the wonder and grief, the growth and guilt, the delight and exhaustion. The kaleidoscope of experiences that make up motherhood can seem random and overwhelming without a spiritual focus to keep the patterns of light and dark in perspective. Sanna sees these challenges as a call to live in sacred wholeness, in the presence of God. A beautifully written contemplation of many aspects of motherhood, written from a Christian perspective but accessible to general readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good News for Mothers, August 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Motherhood: A Spiritual Journey (Hardcover)
This book weaves a continuous thread that connects a modern mother's ordinary life with Christianity's ancient fabric. It is full of hope and comfort, and it assures mothers that God does not call them to perfection; grace is just as real in our dark times as in our light. Ellyn Sanna's personal transparency gives us all permission to be honest about our inner feelings and longings. The book is a valuable resource for all women who struggle with issues of identity, occupation, and faith.

My daughters are now 13 and 17, and over the years I have read quite a few books on the topic of parenting and spirituality. The only other book that I have read that strikes a similar deep chord is Andrew Murray's book, Raising your Children For Christ. I am purchasing several of these very readable, soul-stirring, illuminating books, two for my daughters, and the others to give away to moms needing an infusion of grace and insight. I wish it was around 17 years ago. Thanks for writing such a lovely book Ellyn.

I read this book with joy! No need to be a mother to appreciate the beauty of the author's prose, the truth of her insights, the spirituality shining from each page. I recommend this to all mothers seeking affirmation for their vocation.
