Product Description

WANTED: A female to cook, clean, drive, shop, and worry. Skills in math, spelling and operating without sleep are helpful. Salary consists of hugs, kisses and an unforgettable feeling of love and comfort.

While motherhood doesn't actually come with a job description, there is now "The Mothering Heights Manual for Motherhood: Volume 1: What we wish we knew before becoming a short order cook, shuttle drive, laundress Mother," a wonderful mix of stories, contemplations and advice from everyday moms, best-selling authors and Hollywood producers.

Edited by Christine Fugate, author of the parenting humor column and website "Mothering Heights", this collection will delight you with its candor, humor and insight. Highlights include the mommy drive-by, how to parent with a coffee can and dump laundry on a teenager. Serious topics such as finding an adoptive child's birth mother, raising a child with Down syndrome and recovering from post-partum depression are also featured.

Well-known Mama Lit writer Jane Porter ("Mrs. Perfect", "Odd Mom Out") said, "This achingly funny collection celebrates the modern mom with wit, wisdom and a whole lot of love." While Coast Kids Magazine wrote, "The Mothering Heights Manual for Motherhood: Volume 1" is a must-read, must-share book for all moms." A perfect gift for an expecting mom or veteran mom in need of a boost, "The Manual for Motherhood" will make you laugh at the insanity and cry at the beauty of what it means to be a modern-day mom.

Editor Christine Fugate began writing the syndicated column "Mothering Heights" to stave off the madness of getting married and having two kids in just twenty months. An award-winning filmmaker, she has successfully embarrassed herself in front of George Clooney and Kate Hudson.

4.0 out of 5 stars Send it to your girlfriends!, May 27, 2008
By Dorit Lessard (Laguna Beach CA) - See all my reviews
This is a great book to buy for the women in your life- a great gift for mother's day, baby showers, birthdays or just because days. Everyone can find something to relate to in this collection of essays and poems on motherhood- specifically on what motherhood surprised us with! Just taking a look at the chapter titles told me I was in for a good read: Madness and Mayhem; Mother, May I; Feeding the Zoo; Standing Strong; and Our Sweet Salvation. I love this one quote from a mom of 2 teenagers and a kindergarten- "As my friends' teen children push them away, I still have a small hand that actually seeks mine and then holds it like she will never let go. So, although some days it seems as if I will never graduate from elementary school, that little hand keeps me warm and reminds me that it was totally worth sitting through kindergarten orientation- yet again. I guess if all we ever need to know we learn in kindergarten, then I am very well educated indeed." Quite a nice reminder to enjoy the time we have with the little ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Great Read!!, May 24, 2008
This is not only a great read for moms, but an excellent Father's Day pick!! The stories are wonderful -- some will make you laugh and some will pull at your heart strings -- but whatever you do -- get this book for your mom, your girlfriend, or your hubby! It makes a great addition to any gift basket too!

I have been a fan of Christine Fugate's column Mothering Heights for a long time. She is hilarious in reporting the mundane details we all know about motherhood. Hope she writes a sequel...
