Editorial Reviews

Pretty Maids are a Danish melodic Heavy Metal band formed in 1981 by Ronnie Atkins and Ken Hammer. Their sound can be described as classic guitar-laden heavy Rock with a strong emphasis on melodic elements like vocals and keyboards. Over the years, Pretty Maids have sold hundreds of thousands of records worldwide supporting such bands as Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, and Saxon along the way. Motherland follows the success and acclaim that blessed the band's last few studio releases and promises to be one of their best ever. Produced by Jacob Hansen (Volbeat).

THEN

I'll admit, I was a little late to the Pretty Maids party.

The Danish heavy metal band formed in 1981 (I was 4) and I didn't become aware of them until around 1996. Even then, my initial introduction came about not through their music but through a want ad in the back of a Metal Edge magazine. The now defunct rag had a section in each issue where fans could trade tapes and memorabilia with other like-minded fans. I used to scan these listings periodically for the names of bands I hadn't heard yet. I'd warrant that 65% of the bands in my current collection came from those classified ads. By 1996, however, I had become familiar with most of the A, B, and C-level bands of the 80s and early 90s. I had almost given up even checking the classifieds at all. That was when I saw the two words that would haunt me forever: PRETTY MAIDS. I immediately assumed they were an LA-based glam group...one with minimal studio output. Still, being the completest that I was (and still am), I filed the name away in my subconscious under the heading: MUST HEAR.

Six months later, while digging through dusty boxes of used cassettes at the local CD warehouse, I came across Future World. I snatched it up immediately due in part to the collector in me but more so because of the fantastical futuristic landscape and regal logo emblazoned across the front cover. Simply put, it looked bad ass. I got it home, put it in, and turned it up. I was hooked.

I don't need to go into the merits of Future World. If you're familiar with the Maids, you're already well versed in that seminal slab of melodic stadium metal. I will say this: It was the perfect record to solidify me as a fan. Future World sounded like nothing I had ever heard before from that era. Future World sounded futuristic.

This is a band that just gets better with age. This is the best album of their illustrious and long career.

Like some of my fellow reviewers, I must admit that I was kind of late on the scene when it comes to Pretty Maids. I had heard a little bit of "Spooked" a few years back, but never really gave the band the credit, or the time they deserved. I stumbled upon "Pandemonium" shortly after it's release date, and was totally blown away. In my mind, the band had come leaps and bounds thinking back to what I remembered they sounded like. So with this in mind, I got rather excited with the news of an impending new release in 2013. Like many others, I found it hard to think that the band could meet the heights they had reached with "Pandemonium". It featured cuts that still remain permanently emblazoned on my mind, INVU, was definitely at the forefront of such epic tunes. In "Motherland" however, we see a further maturity in song writing, on issues the band tackle and in overall production. Melodies, hooks and heaviness are still very prominent, with a beautiful blend of all three. These guys can do a power ballad better than anybody and carry it off with ease. Just listen to "Infinity" and Bullet for You". The crowning glory however comes in the form of the title track. Not much to be said there, other than pure genius. Listening to this release, you still get a sense of hope that melodic rock and metal are very much alive and well, in a disposable world where music is such a throwaway, these guys shine a light and act as a beacon for those of us still hanging on to that sound which captured us in the early 90's. I won't go into "Motherland" track by track, it's a wholistic experience. I will however do some back catalogue searching myself, and give these guys the attention they now so desperately deserve.

They've done it again! Though I've never heard a truly "poor" album from Pretty Maids, I was fully expecting this album to be at least a shade weaker than their last disc, "Pandemonium." I even read an online interview with Ronnie Atkins (singer) in which, during the making of "Motherland, he expressed a fear that it would be tough to top "Pandemonium." Having listened to my newly purchased copy of "Motherland" about 10 times now, I'm glad to report that not only is "Motherland" on par with their previous album, it may very well be superior.

Ronnie Atkins voice is still as unique and powerful as ever, the mix is still phenomenal, and the songwriting is stronger than ever (in terms of content AND variety). If you are an old fan of Pretty Maids but have not yet purchased this album, don't worry; it is truly great! You won't be disappointed. If you are reading this with a sense of curiosity because you've heard of this group but have never checked them out, then you are denying yourself a great pleasure every moment you delay in purchasing a Pretty Maids album. Honestly, I do not have enough superlatives to describe how tremendous a band these guys are and, likewise, how shameful it is that they are not stars of the highest magnitude in the world of rock.

I find it sad to think of the many mediocre bands that have "made it" to achieve star status (no names mentioned to protect the guilty) while this band remains mired in obscurity. Though I hale from the "good ole' days" of metal (the 80's) and thus quite naturally find this type of music appealing, my teenage daughter, a product of the sickening pop-music scene in which we currently belong, freely admits that these guys should be mega-stars!
