Book Description

April 15, 1998
Two of America's favorite mommies bring their edgy, hysterically funny and right-on-target look at life in the sac. Cul-de-sac, that is. Caryl Kristensen and Marilyn Kentz, two suburbanites who developed a stand-up routine that led to an ABC sitcom and later a talk show, will have readers saying to themselves, "It feels so good to know I'm not alone," and perhaps, "Thank God that wasn't my kid."

Meeting first as neighbors in a Petaluma cul-de-sac,"The Mommies" juggled babies, Little League, Halloween, teenagers and the secret, unwritten rules of suburban behavior. From their early dreams of glamorous bohemianism to the dirty reality of dirty diapers and carpools, motherhood may have brought its share of sacrifice, but it also sparked real friendships and strong support from the rest of the mothers out there. Now everybody's favorite neighbors, the Mommies tell it like you're over for morning coffee.

Caryl and Marilyn on:

Teenagers: Living with teenagers is like watching Jeopardyevery night; after a while you start thinking, "Maybe I am stupid."

Kids in general: There are two kinds of kids: those who grow up and become lawyers and those who need them. I have both kinds.

Body Image: Don't you think cellulite looks a little better tan?

Childbirth: The epidural was better than the sex that got me there.

Fashion: The rule is this if you're wearing something that's hurting you, chances are it's hurting someone else.

The Motherload, like the best of Erma Bombeck, is a savvy, savagely amusing book that speaks to the tired parent in all of us.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Books come and go.... But this book will stay, because in it, my turtledoves, are the revelations we women have been yearning for. Laugh, cry, and then tell you! friends to get one. You won't want to give this one away. You'll be quoting The Motherload for years." -- E. Jean Carroll, "Ask E. Jean" advice columnist, Elle magazine

"My mom was never like this!" -- Tony Dow, Wally from Leave it to Beaver

"Not since Erma Bombeck have we bad such funny, slice-of-life insights. The Motherload is a funny, funny look at parenting that is also loaded with heart. The Motherload will encourage youand inspire you and most of all entertain you. By sharing their lives with us, Caryl and Marilyn help us all to feel like we're not alone. What a gift." -- Mark Victor Hansen, coauthor of the #1 New York Times bestselling series Chicken Soup for the Soul

"This is how you talk with your friends when men aren't aroundif your friends happen to be highly articulate, disturbingly frank, screamingly frank comediennes." -- Jennifer Tilly --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiration to women of all ages, February 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Motherload: When Your Life's on Spin Cycle and You Just Can't Get the Lid up (Hardcover)
I am a 19 year old college student from upstate New York, and I hopefully have a few more years until I have a husband and a family, but I just wanted you to know that I enjoyed The Mother Load from cover to cover. The book caught my eye because I loved your television series and your talk show. It was so funny that I couldn't put it down! I think it's great that the two of you were willing to share personal stories to inspire other women. I just wanted to let you know that it's not only wives and mothers who read your book. I think your book is an inspiration for women of all ages. I'm looking forward to the next one! Thank you very much.
