5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!, April 17, 2010
This review is from: Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today (Hardcover)
I love to study the women of the Bible, because as women, we relate to women a little easier than we do men.

One of my favorite studies from Kathi's book was about Sarah: Mother of Nations.

Because of Sarah's impatience, she took matters into her own hands, therefore causing a chain reaction that would ripple in the ocean of time for all eternity.

WOW! That's a big chunk to chew on!

Through this study, God reminded me:

It is HIS promise, so HE will bring it to fulfillment in HIS timing! (A hard one for me- I am NOT a patient person!)
My decisions will effect the generation to come. My kids and grandkids and so on and so on!
Allowing my own plan to get in the way of HIS will can cause sin and trouble!

This study would make an awesome MOPS bible study!

I will share this with other moms in my life. Not only great for moms though, any woman can relate to these woman!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of profiles: researched, throrough, relevant, July 15, 2009
This review is from: Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today (Hardcover)
In this book, perfect for individual devotion or group study, the author combines her personal, conversational style with thoroughly researched information to provide stunning portraits of biblical moms. The emphasis is on what these women can teach us today. Each chapter concludes with a "Something to Think About" section of questions and space to journal, as well as a prayer. Readers also enjoy quotes about motherhood from a wide spectrum of people, historical and contemporary, famous and not.

Who's included? Rather than just listing names or chapters, the author actually includes a descriptive paragraph with each listing on the Contents page. I think it's fabulous. Right off the bat, from the very first pages, she makes the stories of these ancient women relevant to us centuries - even millenia later. I can't share all of this with you, but I can give you an example.

"Rizpah: Grief-Stricken yet Faithful -- Can there be anything more painful to a parent than the death of a child? In addition to the agony, losing a child to death seems to be out of the natural order. Yet, from the beginning, mothers have endured this tragedy, which can result in additional problems: divorce, financial difficulties, and even a loss of faith in God. Yet God sees and cares."

In addition to this chapter readers will discover:

* Eve: Without a Role Model
* Sarah: Mother of Nations
* Rebekah: Playing Favorites
* Rachel and Leah: Competing Through Their Children
* Jochobed: The Greatest Sacrifice
* Hannah: Woman of Prayer, Gratitude and Integrity
* Bathsheba: Redemption and Restoration
* The Widow of Zarephath: Generous to the End
* Elizabeth: A Willing Sacrifice
* The Canaanite Woman: Persevering in Prayer
* Salome: Catching the Eternal Vision
* Eunice and Lois: Passing the Torch
* The Proverbs 31 Woman: A Woman for All Seasons
* Mary: In a Class by Herself

Throughout these chapters readers learn about women who have faced infertility, adultery, death or exile of children, death of husbands, public ridicule and scorn and even the little things we all face on a daily basis: wanting our kids to love God, to be their best, to be better than the rest; personal feelings of insecurity or ignorance; isolation. These women were under-appreciated and overworked, just like mothers today.

My only complaint about this book (extremely minor) is the decoration on the pages. The publisher included green scrolls and flowers behind the text on every single page. It seems an unnecessary expense.

Final Thoughts: This is a great book, one I recommend and one I'll reference again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!, March 30, 2010
This review is from: Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today (Hardcover)
A beautiful bridge between mothers of the Bible and mothers of today. The
profound yet practical insights found in each chapter provide a delicate
thread that highlights the similarities of motherhood, which transcend
circumstances, time or ethnicity. The powerful illustrations gently nudge us
moms to face motherhood with strength, hope and expectation. And each
example sings of the triumph moms can have when walking by God's ways, when
we seek His lead and trust in His Word. Mothers of the Bible is rich with
Scripture to support the peace, serenity and confidence we need when facing
the range of emotions moms encounter every day. Each chapter challenges us
to journal, to discover our own treasures in motherhood, and to search for
depth in our vital roles. This tool makes Mothers of the Bible a valuable
resource for moms of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relevant for every mom, March 17, 2010
This review is from: Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today (Hardcover)
This book by Kathi Macias should be on every mom's bookshelf. Christians who have grown up in church will become reaquainted with mothers of the Bible and see, through Kathi's insightful teaching, what their lives show us today. But even those who are not familiar with these characters already (Eve, Sarah, Leah, Rebecca, Mary, Eunice, Lois, etc.) will gain just as much from the book since Kathi's storytelling makes the lessons clear to all, no matter the level of biblical background. Mothers of today from all walks of life learn from mothers of the Bible on subjects like comparing children, generosity, persevering in prayer, faithfulness, forgiveness, generosity, playing favorites, and sacrifice. I know I will be a better mom for having read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kindred Hearts from 2000 Years Ago, September 3, 2009
This review is from: Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today (Hardcover)
Have you ever wondered if there was a manual straight from scripture for moms of today? In "Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today," Kathi Macias has given the reader a lead-by-example style manual with profiles of seventeen women who lived with some of the same struggles that women face today. It doesn't matter that most of them lived over two thousand years ago. The lessons they teach us are still relevant today. Macias has selected some of the greats from Bible history such as Eve, Sarah, Rebekah, and Mary. But she has also chosen some the reader may not have studied much in Sunday school as a child: Rizpah, Salome, Eunice and Lois, and the Widow of Zarephath.

The book is well researched and thorough. Scattered throughout the text are questions that make the reader stop and process the information. The writing stimulates the intellect with a bounty of information about each woman, yet it stimulates the emotions with reflective questions and stories of women from today whose experiences parallel those of the biblical women. Each chapter ends with a section titled "Something to Think About/ Enter in Your Journal." This offers the reader yet another opportunity to personalize the information and process thoughts.

I can see Kathi's writing gifts in this work and many people will deepen their faith because of reading what she has spent so much time putting onto the page. This book can be used in many ways. In addition to use for personal study, it would make an excellent book for a Bible study group. It's also a fantastic research tool for anyone who seeks to study one of the biblical women in depth. Whether for a gift or for personal enrichment, I give the book my wholehearted recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Relevant Work Uncovering Timeless Issues from Biblical Models, June 19, 2009
This review is from: Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today (Hardcover)
In her latest book, Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today, award winning author Kathi Macias demonstrates her depth as author, speaker and bible teacher. Kathi selects 15 women from the Bible, from Old and New testaments, obscure and renowned, and makes their stories come alive through practical application. The reader will find that Kathi has the special talent that makes the lives and emotions of ancient moms relevant to post-modern American culture.

Each of the 15 women who are selected as role models are made real through in-depth, inductive Bible study as well as the author's feminine insight. Like Kathi's other books, this work is refreshingly personal. Still Kathi finds a way to press deeper by cross referencing scripture, explaining cultural influences, and spotlighting the text's linguistic background. She fleshes out the personal side of God's redemptive work as illustrated through her subjects.

For example, in the first chapter, Kathi examines the maternal side of Eve, whose name means: Life Giver. According to the author, Eve must have wrestled deeply with being the "first" at many things. Without role model or mentor, she was the first to have a husband, endure and fall in temptation, lose a son to violent crime and then lose a second to the consequences of his crime. Yet, through it all, God proved faithful to her name, and promise He had given her. Eve bore another son, Seth, through whom Jesus would eventually become the redemption of all mankind, the Eternal Life Giver.

Kathi brings her readers face to face with timeless issues which impose themselves upon today's moms. Have you ever watched a mother play favorites with her children, and the ensuing chaos within a family. Have you experienced a mom's deep struggle with isolation, competing with others due to personal insecurity, or laying down personal desires for your children as they forge their own way in the world? Each chapter concludes with review and application questions. Information without application aborts the disciple-building process, and Kathi makes room for both in this wonderful work.

I've interviewed Kathi a few times, and each time I've come to appreciate her deep commitment to God's word, and desire to live biblical faith in a practical way. As Christ followers, we can mistakenly assume we can have one part of this equation, the practical faith, without a commitment to real discipleship built on a foundation of God's Word. Kathi is an example that these two elements are conjoined twins. The only way to have one is to engage the other.

I give this book 5 stars out of 5, and recommend it highly. This latest work is insightful, balanced, scripturally grounded, well researched and highly relevant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Thought Provoking, May 17, 2009
This review is from: Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today (Hardcover)
As much as I've read the Bible, I've never thought to delve into the hearts and minds of the characters within.

Ms. Macias has done a beautiful job in searching the hearts and minds of the women from whom all mothers come. Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today is a lovely example of the wisdom and direction that can be only gleaned from the Source of all life and through His Word.
