5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and Sweet with a Touch of Sly
This is a fine cd. Rosie's voice has mellowed over the years and on this recording it is dark and has a touch of the velvet fog in it, but it works. The arrangements range from simpler guitar accompaniment (Turn Around) to big band sounds (That Face and others). The arrangements are solid and work within the framework of the songs. 1.0 out of 5 stars This cd was a big turn off, it could have had better results
This cd seemed doomed from the very beginning. Let me try to explain. For starters, it used a lot of electronic instrumentation. I would have preferred acoustic instrumentation. Next it used a very weak repertoire that I didn't know very well. Oh, I knew a few of the songs, but nearly enough of the songs performed.

For the bright spots, I thought Rosie sang well. Her...

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and Sweet with a Touch of Sly, February 12, 2001
This review is from: Mothers & Daughters (Audio CD)
This is a fine cd. Rosie's voice has mellowed over the years and on this recording it is dark and has a touch of the velvet fog in it, but it works. The arrangements range from simpler guitar accompaniment (Turn Around) to big band sounds (That Face and others). The arrangements are solid and work within the framework of the songs. Songs that can take bigger sounds get them and those that can't are done more simply. I have arranged music in the past and I don't see much of anything wrong here.

There is a lot of personality in the music and in the performances. While her voice isn't as crystalline as it once was, the nuances Rosie puts into lyrics make up for it. You can "hear" the twinkle in her eyes when she sings "Sisters". She also handles "God Bless the Child" with a lot of soul. The Irving Berlin tune "Always" is here and I'm glad. It's an incredible lyric that is perfectly handled musically. The arrangement here is light and open, delicate and done well.

You have to like Rosie to like this cd. I don't think this collection will make anyone a convert, but in terms of selection and quality of performance, this is a good one to add to your Rosie collection. It is also a great one to listen to with your mom!

4.0 out of 5 stars Clooney Scores !, August 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mothers & Daughters (Audio CD)
Miss Clooney has a concept CD that celebrates mothers and daughters in song. Good idea, fine result! She misses on a few selections but they don't detract from the composite. Leaving aside Sinatra, there are only two other artists that can handle a ballad with only a piano for company. One is the vastly underrated Dean Martin ( much of whose best work is found on His Dream With Dean CD and also on unrecorded performances from his hit TV show) and Miss Clooney. Listen to ALWAYS and WRAP YOUR TROUBLES IN DREAMS and you'll see what I mean. She and her longtime accompianist John Oddo are like hand and glove. While celebrating mothers and daughters, there is no reason for fathers and sons (and brothers too for that matter), not to enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A loving tribute from mothers to daughters, August 5, 2004
This review is from: Mothers & Daughters (Audio CD)
Rosemary Clooney was one of the greatest pop standard vocalists of the last century. Later in her career, she was able to explore the types of music she enjoyed singing, rather than what was commercially successful. In this 1997 album, she pays tribute to the women in her life: her daughters, daughters-in-law, and grand-daughters. The relationship between a mother and daughter is a rare and special one, and many of these songs bring this to light very effectively.

The best songs on the album are the classic 'Turn Around' (a duet with Keith Carradine), 'Baby Mine' and 'Always', as far as suiting her voice, and suiting the subject matter. The entire album is relaxing, touching, and a must-have for moms and their daughters alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a very sweet and touching collection of songs., April 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mothers & Daughters (Audio CD)
I have searched and searched for the song "Turn Around" because my mother used to sing it to me when I was little. I was thrilled when I found Rosemary Clooney singing it as a duet so beautifully on this CD. The CD is full of songs like it that are beautifully done and full of meaning for mothers and daughters. I am buying another one for my mom for Mother's Day. She will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars "reflections of love for her family ~ Girl Singer!", April 22, 2001
This review is from: Mothers & Daughters (Audio CD)
There is no better interpreter of lyrics than our Rosie, the "Girl Singer" ~ has the rare ability to put herself so completely in a song and make it her own. What other performer takes great songs, mixing them with her velvety rich voice ~ providing inspiration and powerful emotion.

Opening track ~ "THANK HEAVEN FOR LITTLE GIRLS", is touching sentiment with the women in her family (daughters/grand-daughters/sister-in-laws/sister) ~ how seldom Rosie has told them, but with this album and through music they will cherish and love every selection. Must make mention of the final track ~ "SISTERS" (Irving Berlin), performed by Rosie & Betty Clooney with Paul Weston & His Orchestra/recorded June 23, 1954 ~ the harmony is so instinctive that if Rosie coughed, Betty would find a third for it.

Want to thank ~ John Oddo (producer/conductor/arranger/pianist) ~ Glen Barros, John Burk & Allen Sviridoff (executive producer) ~ Leslie Ann Jones (recorded/mixer) ~ and Concord Jazz for this look into the inner most feelings of this legendary "Girl Singer"!

Total Time: 55:16 on 17 Tracks...Concord Jazz CCD-4754-2...(1997)

This is a great selection of songs. It's so hard to find happy and positive music these days, and this CD has such tender songs, perfect for a mother's day gift or for anyone who wants a happy feeliing.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD was one of the greatest I ever heard., April 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Mothers & Daughters (Audio CD)
I bought this CD after hearing a song from it on the radio that I hadn't heard for years. The song was Turn Around. It brought back memories and makes me cry every time I hear it.

Her rendition of every song is wonderful especially God Bless the Child and Look To the Rainbow.

One song on this CD that I had never heard before was And I'll Be There. Upon hearing this piece I started tearing up and thinking of my niece.

I have purchased extra copies of this CD to give as gifts for Mother's Day and highly recommend it to anyone who has a daughter or any little girl that you are close to.

5.0 out of 5 stars EMOTIONAL AND AFFECTING TO THE NTH DEGREE, June 15, 2000
This review is from: Mothers & Daughters (Audio CD)
I was surprised at how MOVED I was by this recording: Rosemary sounds as warm as ever, but the arrangements and recording capture SO much tenderness that the fact that most of the songs have been so overdone, over the years - just disappears - it's like they were never done RIGHT before! This CD would be the perfect Rx for folks in therapy for childhood abuse - Rosemary's voice just envelops you in love!
