4.0 out of 5 stars A good begining, September 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Mothers and Sons: Raising Boys to Be Men (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a very good book for moms of boys. The authors are not politically correct--thank goodness for straight answers on difficult topics such as erections and masturbation...,however, I do not think they deal completely enough with masturbation regarding teenagers. They raise it as a problem and do not really offer a solution. For that I have found "Every Young Man's Battle" an invaluable resource. That books is mainly for older boys, so I reccomend both books for a complete picture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book - that doesn't pull punches, January 15, 2003
By
This review is from: Mothers and Sons: Raising Boys to Be Men (Mass Market Paperback)
Covered very difficult topics without giving a hoot about political correctness. I was terrified of the thoughts of raising a son alone. I knew that being too passive and tender a mom could do as much damage as being too strong and masuline a mom. This book clarified many things in my gut - and explained "what was wrong" with the things I had seen other single mothers do that I didn't agree with but couldn't explain why. Understanding why is the key.

I especially liked the Spiritual side of this book. With Society conflicting with Christian Biblical teachings, its nice to have some issues addressed without politics. such as sexual development, homosexuality, proper punishment methods and the psychological impact of improperly applied parenting.

If I could have given this book a zero I would have. This book does deal with a good bit of Christanity which was great because that was what I was looking for.BUT it was way to heavy on unrealistic things, telling a child that "masturbation is something little kids do (like thumbsucking)" was a little too much for me. It was also disturbing that Dr. Spock was used as a reference. Also for me I am 25 years old and I am raising boys in this century, so this book seemed very old fashioned and outdated. I do think there were some good ideas in the book but the outrageous just pushed too far. I ended up not reading the whole book. I am very disappointed. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!
