Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I wrote the poems in "A Mother's Tears" as part of my journey as a grieving parent.  My greatest hope is that they will help others who have suffered a loss as much as writing them has helped me.

About the Author

Claire Ann Stevenson grew up in an Air Force family traveling the world. For twenty-three years she continued her travels as an Army wife, busy raising her two children. She and her husband, Sam, now make their home in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

I have known Claire Ann since we were 12 years old. Our father's were in the Air Force and we lived in Trier, Germany. I can't imagine the loss of a child because that has never happened to me but I know what pain it would be if I lost one of my children! From gummy bears and sled riding down the "hill" we lived on, to marriage and motherhood, Claire Ann and I experienced the best. We both had one girl and one boy in the same proximity in age. It was short of amazing when they moved to Virginia and I got to see her and her family more. I feel so much for Claire Ann and Sam and Laura (in their loss of Graham) and know that these poems Claire Ann wrote are her healing of her loss of Graham. As a matter-of-fact, this is a Claire Ann I have not known - a literary gift born out of her loss - an amazing feat - I am SO proud of her. And Sam's photography is superb and so meaningful in the compilation of this book in Graham's memory. This book should be read by anyone who has lost a child - or hasn't but wants to experience what someone else feels with their loss. I bought two of her books - and gave one away . . . to spread it around.

A Mother's Tears is aptly named. Claire Ann Stevenson, amidst her sorrow has been able to express the emotions surrounding her grief in simple, realistic, poetic terms. The poems confirm the emotions for those who have experienced such significant loss as a child's death and gives insight for friends and family who want to better understand the struggle of coping with the loss. The poems often end with uplifting thoughts that she is never alone, gratitude for the time she and her son did have and recognition that while her son is physically absent, love remains. She also provides a list of books, cds, songs and websites that have helped her through this journey. This book is a thoughtful gift.

I met Mrs. Stevenson at her book signing in Fredericksburg, Va. She is a nice woman with much sadness. Her poems are supposed to be about heartbreak, loss, and discovery. After reading her poems they all seem to be about her loss and the intense suffering she feels. I see no hope in these poems about getting past the loss of a child; the poems seem to dwell on only the grief.
