The illustrations are fascinating and slow down one's reading in order to fully savor the yearnings, wants, and trials of an old woman and a Star Child who wants to experience first-hand what Christmas is all about. High expectations can contrast painfully with reality when "everybody else" is full of egg nog and high spirits. Marketed as a children's book, it will be thought provoking for grade schoolers... but I really think it is grown ups who will get the most from this.
The paper back price made it possible for me to give it to almost all the adults on my list this year!
It has wonderful dense illustrations by Trina Schart Hyman, an illustrator of hundreds of books, and also a founder and frequent contributor to "Cricket", a quality magazine for children.
The story tells of a lonely woman who is unexpectedly visited by an "ugly child" and how that experience slowly opens her heart. Who hasn't felt a bit grumpy, been cheered by a visit from a friend, or longed for the feeling of "enough"? Really, you must read it!!

It is marked as a previous book from a library, otherwise it would be perfect. I am delighted to have my own copy of this great Christmas story.Published 3 months ago by Amazon Customer
I like the artwork and the story but found the ending to be a bit overwrought...I think it should have ended one page earlier. Interesting story but not my favorite christmas book.Published 5 months ago by Amazon Customer
I purchased this book to share with my class of struggling readers (grade 6). I converted it into a play, which we performed for the Life Skills class, to much applause. Read morePublished 11 months ago by Drew
