Holiday Favorite,
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Mother's Youngest Child (Hardcover)
For as long as I can remember, every Christmas Eve my family would gather around my dad as he read this story to us. Although we are all adults now, and two spouses have entered the family, we all still look forward to hearing this story read aloud. We practically know it by heart. It captures the warmth and beauty of the simplicity of sharing, with humorous characters and perfect illustrations to match. And I know the tradition will continue on in our own families.

A Christmas Tradition,
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Mother's Youngest Child (Hardcover)
If you want to start a Christmas tradition for your children, their children and following generations...this is THE book to have. It's a story about giving, sharing and all those important ideals we want our children to carry with them into adulthood.

This book is a children's literature classic for all ages!!!,

If you are looking to capture the essence of giving, joy and companionship this is the book. Although it is a "Christmas" story it extends far beyond any celebration or holiday to a celebration of life, giving and appreciating what we have. Like Byrd Baylor's THE OTHER WAY TO LISTEN, this book harkens to what is invisible to the eye. That sense of that connection of heart and spirit shared be all living things, whether you come from the stars or live seemingly old and alone on the outskirts of village which has long forgotten you are there. It is an answer to the age old question, What does last forever? A must for any serious collector of children's books!!!!!

A "happy feeling" book...,
This review is from: Star Mother's Youngest Child (Paperback)
I have read this book EVERY year for the past 15 years and I just read it again. I laugh and then I cry and then when it's over I hold it tight for just a minute to make sure the happy feeling lasts! My grandchilren are old enough now for us to enjoy it together...and we will.

I teach Grade 2 and my students love listening to this story,

This book is humorous and the plot is cleverly presented. I have read to this book to my Second Graders for 6 or 7 years. It is always well received. The language is highly descriptive and a joy to read. You can picture both characters asking "Is this too much to ask?" Enjoy it!

A comforting place to come home to,
By A Customer
This review is from: Star Mother's Youngest Child (Hardcover)
My mother has bought me a Christmas book every year since I was born. She writes the year and my age on the first page. She gave me Star Mother when I was eleven and it is a joyous story that I have been returning to for the past thirteen years. When I feel lonely or melancholy I will read it and it always warms up my heart and I can feel the love that all human beings are capable of giving. It's a tremendous example of the universal desire for companionship and love

This is a beautifully written book. It's a family tradition in our home. I've given this book as a gift for many years, and it is always well appreciated. I recommended it for December's book in my bookclub this year, and everyone gave it a "5" which is the top rating.

This is a lovely story and the illustrations are of course beautiful. Hyman just blows me away-- always gorgeous, stunning images!! (If you do not have Hyman's version of Little Red Riding Hood I strongly recommend it. It is a work of art!) The only reason this book is getting four rather than five stars is that it is a really small book, which I was not expecting. You may want to opt for a bigger version. Happy reading!

Louise Moeri is an under-known wonderful writer, and this is my favorite Christmas story for ME (a mother, grandmother with a sometimes grumpy "inner child").
The illustrations are fascinating and slow down one's reading in order to fully savor the yearnings, wants, and trials of an old woman and a Star Child who wants to experience first-hand what Christmas is all about. High expectations can contrast painfully with reality when "everybody else" is full of egg nog and high spirits. Marketed as a children's book, it will be thought provoking for grade schoolers... but I really think it is grown ups who will get the most from this. The paper back price made it possible for me to give it to almost all the adults on my list this year!

I knew exactly what I was getting. This is a very touching story, with illustrations that match the images in my mind. I've known the tale by heart since first I read it. It's nice to hold it in my hands, to share with others, too.
