Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The advent of new software and the blurring of disciplinary boundaries have given rise to an entirely new creative category—motion graphics. Motion by Design is the first combined book and interactive DVD package to present the works of some of the world’s leading motion graphic studios. The book showcases new work by over 30 international studios, grouped according to genre: Opening Credits, Commercial/Installation and Web, each introduced by a leading motion graphic designer: Garson Yu, Why Not Associates and Hillman Curtis. A main introduction provides a history of motion graphics and a glossary explains the key terms. The accompanying DVD contains not only full samples and reels of almost all of the featured work, but also an interactive historical timeline tracing the development of notion graphic styles. Most importantly, these impressive works will be represented in their element—in motion.

About the Author
Spencer Drate and Judith Salavetz have created CD packages for Lou Reed, U2, Joan Jett and the talking Heads, and are the recipients of many AIGA and Art Director Club Awards. Their previous books include The Independent Movie Poster Book.

1.0 out of 5 stars dont even bother, March 23, 2007
By Henry S. Birdseye (berkley, mi United States) - See all my reviews

"Motion by Design" is a book about motion graphics. One might expect that a DVD enclosed with such a book might be chock full of tremendous examples of cool stuff. Not the case. The dvd is a mess. The disc is hard to navigate, videos play as windows within menus, NOT full screen, but that's made worse by the huge copyright super on the frames and an unanavoidable narration track. I feel ripped off by a promise unkept. Don't waste your cash on this ripoff.

5.0 out of 5 stars very delayed reference, March 4, 2007
By Cem Gül (Istanbul, Turkey) - See all my reviews

qualified motion samples from all media with a short text explanation.
That's ok for me. But what's the problem with the DVD interface guys? You can not play all so you have to select each title from a long list, again again, its pain. The interface design so cheesy, low-end DVD for hi-end content. You can only watch a part of some long samples such as music videos, shame... 5 stars for the book not DVD.

3.0 out of 5 stars it's ok, May 28, 2008
By Dsazzy1 (Chicago) - See all my reviews
Good book for inspiration, but the dvd is just ok. The dvd automatically opened my Mac's dvd player at full screen - which was quite pixelated. You would have expected a dvd showcasing innovative motion graphics to look less honkey-tonk. It was as if the publishers thought about producing the dvd as an afterthought.

Great book for getting inspired, dvd was a bit off a let down the quality isn't the best. But this is a great book for people that need inspiration and admire great work.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cool Book, Terrible DVD
If you plan to get this book for inspiration, it looks pretty good. But the DVD is almost worthless as the navigation makes it hard to watch and then the actual examples have text... Read more
