Editorial Reviews

Review

“Leaders who know the 'skinny' move people to achieve amazing results in a culture of shared ownership. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The appeal of Motion Leadership in our global quest to improve learning is that it cuts to the core of what 21st-century leadership is all about.” (Avis Glaze, Former Chief Student Achievement Officer of Ontario 20090909)

“Fresh, lively, succinct. Whether you are just starting out as a new leader or are experienced at leading change, 'the skinny' is a great read. Motion Leadership will help you lead complex change.” (Steve Munby, Chief Executive 20090909)

"A great book—a classic Fullan. He gives us the skinny on how leaders can take aim at inertia and set large-scale change in motion. Motion Leadership follows rules of powerful simplicity and transparency. This book inspires and shows leaders how they can achieve even the most ambitious change goals. Readers will be compelled to take action from the first page on." (Milbrey McLauglin, David Jacks Professor of Education and Public Policy 20090923)

‘Here’s a ‘Pearl and Dean’ trailer for a forthcoming multimedia presentation on the subtleties and urgencies of improving schools. All school leaders will want to have this easy-to-read skinny. If I were still a school system leader, I would buy a copy for every school, just as I did of Fullan’s original ‘What’s woth fighting for..’ and 'Leading in a culture of Change' books. Fullan defies the odds and gets even better with age. Mind you, I can’t wait for the multi-media version of Motion Leadership." (Tim Brighouse, Former Commisssioner of London Schools, England 20090923)

"Fullan has done it again. The book opens up new worlds for school and system leaders. A giant leap forward that has path-breaking implications for educational leadership and the difference it can make to student achievement." (Bill Hogarth, Director of Education 20090923)

"A book that contains considerable information about the change process. Michael Fullan focuses on the skills needed to effectively lead complex change." (Justin B. Henry, Superintendent 20111116)

5.0 out of 5 stars Distilling change in schools December 19, 2009
Format:Paperback
Michael Fullan (2010), Motion Leadership.

Many experienced principals have been to Michael Fullan workshops and most will own several of his books. In all honesty, I felt that while Michael is a great bloke and a legend in the change arena, he had been over-exposed as the Fullan production line has flooded the market every year. Then, along came this book- 85 pages of uncommon sense.

A brilliant teaching strategy that Michael uses is taken from the Naked Chef's (Jamie Oliver) "Jamie's School Dinners". Schools aren't that different to kitchens. The current genre of cooking shows where a celebrity cook (Oliver, Ramsay etc) comes into a restaurant and improves the fare provides great entertainment (although Gordon Ramsay's techniques probably don't fit school situations!). The focus of change needs to re-establish ,with fresh eyes, why staff are there, and what the clients want. Then, the culture needs to change in the kitchen/school so that the long established ways of doing things either fit the new bill or disappear.

This is a two-hour read, and it will re-connect school leaders to effective change. In time-strapped organisations, like schools, this is an excellent resource.

I'll be buying this for my own admin. team because it is brief, written in a conversational style, to the point, and represents the distillation of Michael Fullan's tremendous experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get moving with Change: Motion June 21, 2010

Michael Fullan has done it again. This time in a short, concise format with the book Motion. In a short book he has capsulized much of his current work and referenced it. This is a handy how-to-guide as well as a reminder of the process of change. A great resource and reference book.
