UPDATE: A small patch came in today, and the motion controls seem somewhat better, and difficulty appears somewhat tweaked.. esp. in boxing. There may be other fixes, but I'll up from 2-3 stars.
It seems that much like with the Wii launch some developers have made some inferior games to cash in. I would place Motionsports in this category. There are some fun games in here so it's not a complete disaster. On the good side - Skiing Equestrian Hanggliding Football are all decent although football and equestrian are almost "turn based" (seems as this was a design decision not a function of the hardware) as you must perform your move well before the motion actually happens which is odd since Skiing and hanggliding are both extremely responsive. On the diaster/broken mechanics side I would place Boxing and Soccer. Boxing difficulty seems ridiculous. You can connect with many punches on just the second boxer after the "tutorial" boxer and if he hits you a couple of times you're going down. In soccer the setup for kicking the ball pretty much breaks the gameplay as it is extremely difficult to tell where exactly on your floor you need to kick. It does say "shoot" but only for a very brief moment. There is also no online multiplayer (I believe there is in Microsoft sports) so the game gets a negative there. Also, there is no broader game.. would be nice if they could have included some sort of party game setup so the minigames don't feel so detached.

Do not buy this game. I just got the Kinect and wanted to try a sports title.. unfortunately I bought this game and was very disappointed! If you finish any stage in the game you have to start over just to try and continue (how dumb is that ubisoft?)
Do yourself a favor and spend your money on another title related to sports.

This game was terrible. It doesn't been have any full games to play, just little activities from within different sports. A waste of money. Stick with kinect sports

This game was very frustrating at first. There two things I found you have to do with this game:
1. It does not work in the Kinect good zone. You have to have more space. It was cutting off my feet until I moved the couch and didn't respond to most jumps. 2. You have to actually watch the demos and do exactly as shown in the demo. For example in the football crouch you have to actually put your hands on the ground. So the controls in this one are not very intuitive on this game. It definitely needs to be more forgiving. I don't like that it forces you to unlock everything. You have to go through these lame scenarios to get to the ones that are actually worthwhile. This game really seems like they mostly built half a game, or may be a quarter of a game. Like some demos they through together. It's still somewhat fun and a good workout, but probably best to spend your money on something else.

First I went through a 30 minute dance trying to get the sensor to pick me up, which I did not have to go through this with other games. There is a major delay between action and input, for football I was 10 yards in front of a marker I had to duck under so I crouched down, and even after waiting for 4 seconds for my player to crouch it still did not. Bad game save your money, save your time, save your sanity.
I bought this game from Walmart and I cannot return it so I guess I got taken.

This game is not as much fun as it looks. It is not easy for the kids and the sensor is odd on it. I liked the hang gliding, but that is about it.

The main reason I purchased this game was to play football, I was very disappointed when all it had on it were a bunch of side games with no actual team against team football. I still have not tried all of the games but from what I have played the tracking is terrible, THIS IS NOT A KINECT ISSUE! I say this because Adventures and Kinect Sports are great, and track very well with what you are doing. I wish I would not have spent money on this game, The graphics are much better than most of the other kinect games, but I think that may be why it falls so far behind when it comes to gameplay. Kinect is new technology and this game is full of some great ideas for games, they just need to keep working on it.

Bought this game the other day because we had so much fun with Kinect Sports and we wanted to play some other sports games. Save your money because there is horrible lag with most of the games we tried. With the football, it wouldn't even register movement sometimes, making it completely frustrating to play. Games sounded fun, but with the lag not so much. I will be returning it to Gamestop ASAP!

Not Fun + Frustrating Bugs = AVOID,

I highly recommend that you skip this game completely. The minigames are not fun, the game is buggy and it is saddled with a very poor menu design and interface.
Motion Sports is made up of several different sports: soccer, football, hang-gliding, boxing, horseback-riding and skiing. Each sport has several different game modes, which are unlocked by playing through the beginning modes. The game does not make it very clear how to unlock the other games. Just keep playing and eventually they'll unlock. The sports vary in degree of frustration from boring to maddening. Here is my synopsis of each sport: Hang-gliding: BORING. Put your hands at shoulder level and sway your shoulders back and fourth, up and down to maneuver the glider. Very little movement is required to control this exceptionally boring mini-game. Boxing: FRUSTRATING. Most punches are not registered by the Kinect so you end up flailing your arms wildly hoping for the Kinect to pick up the movement. Horseback Riding: YAWN. This game is boring, repetitive and not fun at all. Skiing: CROUCH AND LEAN. If you enjoy crouching in a skiing position for minutes at a time you will love this mode. Crouch down and lean back and forth to control the skier. Combine the cramp-inducing crouching and the imprecise, broken controls of this game to produce a horrible gaming experience. Soccer: MADDENING. Several different mini-games are included. The penalty shoot-out is probably the finest single mini-game; the Kinect reflects your movements as goalie accurately. The shootout mode is fun for a few plays but after a while is very repetitive. The other modes (target shooting, midfield shooting) suffer from very poor motion recognition by the Kinect. Attempting to precisely aim for the top corner of the goal is nigh-impossible with the unpredictable Kinect response to your movement - sometimes you kick way over the goal, sometimes low and weak. Football: BROKEN. The running back minigames are boring and imprecise. Once again, the game suffers from inaccurate registering of your movements. When you perform well at the running back game, it's more luck than skill. The quarterback game is totally broken and unusable. I found several other bugs in my couple of hours with the game: 1. The game freezing and locking up. I had to power down my xbox to recover 2. The game failing to recognize me numerous times even after playing dozens of games. This caused me to have to sign in to Xboxlive over and over again. I have not had this problem with any other Kinect games. 3. The "camera" inside the game moving far away from the action, rendering that specific game unplayable This game is also plagued by a terrible menu system and is lacking in basic functions such as a "back" button. Avoid at all costs!

Epic Christmas morning failure,
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: MotionSports: Play For Real (Video Game)
This game was a gift from Santa for my daughter. She thought it looked fun after seeing the horseback riding portion in a demo and really wanted it. We opened it Christmas morning but the game wouldn't sense her enough to play. It could pick up on some of her body movement but not her hands, so for all practical purposes this game was unplayable. My daughter's had no problem playing other Kinect games so what gives with this one?
I purchased the game at Best Buy but unfortunately they wouldn't return the game or exchange it for another game (this is their store policy). Even when I explained how my daughter couldn't even play the game they wouldn't budge. Best Buy's solution was to call Ubisoft, the game's maker, in hopes that they could do something. The number they gave me was 1 800 824-7638. Apparently Ubisoft only handle calls during business hours because when I tried (8:30 PM this evening) no one answered (either that or Best Buy gave me a bogus number to get rid of me). Hopefully this number will come in handy for other's out there that have voiced complaints about this game's playability (or lack of). |
