Motivation That Works! is a very well done look at how to set meaningful goals and to achieve them. Although I have read many fine books on this subject, I was especially impressed with Mr. Saftlas's approach. Where most authors on this subject are unbounded in their optimism for what you can accomplish, Mr. Saftlas seems to hedge his equally unbounded optimism with the most conservative strategy for getting there that I have seen. As a result, I think you are more likely to achieve your dreams with this approach than with any other that I have read about.

What most "experts" in this field do is to describe a process that worked well for them. However, is that process likely to work well for you? Perhaps.

What Mr. Saftlas has done is to describe a process that encompasses almost everything that has ever worked for anyone. Will that approach work well for you? Probably.

The seven steps in his process are as follows:

1. Set a goal.

2. Establish your motivation to accomplish the goal by examining why you want success, what you stand to gain, what you stand to lose if you fail, and then applying that learning to finding a unique motivational tool for you.

3. Take responsibility and track your progress towards the goal.

4. Find a role model to help you focus on the most effective steps needed.

5. Visualize your success in terms of the result and the process of getting there.

6. Improve your belief in yourself to get the job done, establish a positive external self image, secure support to help you be more consistent, and improve your ability to handle criticism.

7. Rejuvenate your commitment daily to the goal!

The process calls for getting lots of help. You are encouraged to get advice from those who have experience in coaching people in your goal area and role models. You are also directed to tell those who care about you about your goal and to ask them to help spur you on. I think most people would accomplish a great deal more with all of that support. I endorse the approach.

I also liked the way he emphasizes focusing on one goal at a time. Most books seem to want you to change everything simultaneously . . . and then everything collapses when your motivation runs out.

I also liked the way he emphasizes the need for constant motivation. How could you help but succeed if you do that?

I thought that the discussions about losing weight were especially good in the book, so if that may be your goal this book may be helpful to you.

Every year I look for a book to recommend to those who want to give a graduation gift to high school and college students. This year my selection is Motivation That Works!

4.0 out of 5 stars your motivational blueprint, July 21, 2004
This review is from: Motivation That Works: How To Get Motivated and Stay Motivated (Paperback)
We may not like to admit it, but we all know from personal experience that motivation is temporary. With this in mind, I approached Motivation That Works with some reservations. Fortunately, author Zev Saftlas also knows that motivation on its own does not last, so he created the Motivational Blueprint. It is a seven step process to identify your goal and maintain the motivation you need to achieve it.

In Step 1, you identify your goal. Step 2 allows you to flesh out why you want to achieve it. You then commit to your goal and take responsibility in Step 3, become a student of success in Step 4 and visualize your success in Step 5. You start improving your self-image and beliefs in Step 6, and renew your commitment daily through Step 7.

Each step contains a great collection of stories and quotes that bring the concepts to life. The concepts themselves are not necessarily new or earth-shattering. What makes this book unique, effective and worthwhile is the Motivational Blueprint. If you are tired of having your motivation fizzle with time, plug yourself in to the Motivational Blueprint to "get motivated and stay motivated".

5.0 out of 5 stars 7 Steps to Success, February 5, 2005
This review is from: Motivation That Works: How To Get Motivated and Stay Motivated (Paperback)
Most overnight success stories usually took twenty years of hard work. ~Eddie Cantor

Zev Saftlas is a coach and his book presents a motivational blueprint to take you from dreamer to achiever. As someone who could not survive without my life coach, I think everyone needs to find someone who can analyze their life and present motivating ideas that actually work.

I have a theory that you only need one person to believe in you in order to reach some level of success in your life. That person could also just be you! I have had to learn to believe in myself, but it helps if you do have some positive reinforcement.

Books like Motivation that Works are especially helpful because the author presents action plans, goals to generate the needed energy and lots of inspirational quotes.

Zev Saftlas teaches you how to be patient, learn from other people's mistakes and how to visualize your journey. He also explains why negative self-talk is very destructive and explains how successful people are not born in the top, they work very hard to overcome countless setbacks and obstacles to reach a place where others would consider them to be a success.

I have to agree with Eddie Cantor, sometimes success takes twenty years of hard work! We all just have to keep taking steps towards the dream life we have imagined and I think this book will encourage you to look at your life with a fresh perspective.

There are many ideas you can apply to your life today and some you can consider for the future. You will also find perfectly logical explanations and a deep understanding of what it takes to succeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harness Your Passion & Make Your Dreams Come True!, May 13, 2004
This review is from: Motivation That Works: How To Get Motivated and Stay Motivated (Paperback)
MOTIVATION THAT WORKS is an essential book for everyone, because it's chock-a-block full of enthusiastic, common-sense wisdom for making your dreams come true. I got so excited from reading it that I felt inspired to jump up and DO things, and I was impressed with how completely it covers just about every helpful technique there is for getting and staying motivated.

Feel inadequate?
-- Deluge yourself with continuous positive affirmations.

Unsure what goals to set?
-- Pick the most positive goals you can possibly imagine for yourself.

Suffer from on-again, off-again motivation?
-- Find the secret motivator that will bring you lasting success.

Raised by bad examples?
-- Choose your own best motivational role models.

MOTIVATION THAT WORKS carefully describes a very simple yet complete seven-step system for attaining any goal -- whether it's weight loss or rags-to-riches -- while having fun along the way! I love the personal stories included in each chapter, describing how people succeeded in turning their lives around.

If you've had trouble meeting your goals, and wondered what went wrong, MOTIVATION THAT WORKS will help you make your dreams come true. The most common pitfalls, like biting off more than you can chew, or spending time with people and situations that aren't supporting your vision of success, can be easily avoided when you know how to deal with them. I give MOTIVATION THAT WORKS my highest recommendation!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you can stay motivated, you can do it!, December 1, 2004
By
This review is from: Motivation That Works: How To Get Motivated and Stay Motivated (Paperback)
Many people have an idea of what they want to do in life, but they don't necessarily know where to begin or how to stay motivated to accomplish their dreams. Start here with Zev Saftlas' book. You'll get pumped up to go after your goals! Zev lays it all out logically, from goal setting to finding role models to taking action, and he makes it very simple for anyone to follow. Motivation That Works gets you started in the right direction.

The key, though, as many have already figured out from personal experience, is staying motivated, and that's where this book becomes absolutely essential. Zev's enthusiasm is contagious! He spent ten years learning how to effectively motivate himself, and that decade was well-spent, transforming him from a dreamer to a doer. He's developed a "Motivational Blueprint" that takes you from defining your goals to actually achieving them. As you go through the book you'll read inspiring true stories and get doses of compassionate wisdom, but you always ultimately return to the Motivational Blueprint which becomes YOUR personal blueprint to success.

I love the examples Zev uses, including the story of Pablo Morales' incredible olympic comback and the story of how the Chicken Soup For The Soul series made it to the top.

So what's the key to staying motivated long enough to reach success? Read the chapter on "Rejuvenation" and you'll find out. But I'll give you a hint ... it involves patience, persistence, and knowing how to deal with setbacks, among other important factors you'll read about.

Motivation That Works will help you chart your course to success and stay on track, whatever you may encounter along the way. I highly recommend it!
