Getting to the heart of the issue ... Motives by Ed Welch, August 10, 2010
This review is from: Motives: Why Do I Do the Things I Do (Resources for Changing Lives) (Paperback)
I read the one star review and have a very different slant. This book on motives really gets to the heart of things. Isn't it true that even on our best day our motives are shot through with sin? Who doesn't wake up every morning and think about #1 ... himself/herself. Let's be honest ... we love ourselves. We want things our way ... all the time. (It's our nature, apart from God's grace.) Ed's little book takes no prisoners. What we need to do is humble ourselves ... we will be lifted up in the end. Before there can be life, there has to be death. Read this book ... take it to heart ... let God change you and give you life.

Motives, March 10, 2011
This review is from: Motives: Why Do I Do the Things I Do (Resources for Changing Lives) (Paperback)
This booklet is *very* good about teaching you where your motives come from. It deals with your heart (mind/emotions/will) and what drives your decisions and, eventually, your actions. Having said that, it focuses concretely from a spiritual view of man and how even are actions reveal our spiritual condition - what you love, what/who you're serving, what your life is centered around, what/who controls you, etc, etc. So, I highly recommended to better understand the inward workings of your soul/heart and how decisions are made. However, this is written assuming an audience that is already actively searching spiritual things, have a monotheistic view, and may even assume a biblical or Christian worldview on the reader's part. For others, like those in 12-step groups, I believe it also will make sense - although they may or may not appreciate the conclusions.
Further this book is VERY good about identifying the problems and root causes of motives, but it spends very, very little time on good "solutions" and is not very practical on *changing* your motives. It's given at the end - almost as an afterthought. So, just go into it realizing this will strongly help you identify the roots of the problems in areas of your life. But, you will have to go further and deeper for insight into accurate, theological solutions.

Read and re-read, March 10, 2011
This review is from: Motives: Why Do I Do the Things I Do (Resources for Changing Lives) (Paperback)
I have read this little book on several occasions over the last 3 years and it has literally saved me from myself each time. I use this book to get clarity about my inner life, my heart's desires - to know myself. Then as I realize it's my creator who I long to know and my purpose I long to live, I pull up out of self-absorption and release the lesser things I crave and am slave to. What freedom!! Thanks to Mr. Welch and his faithfulness to God's healing work.
