Great for the tax novice, or beginner, May 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Motley Fool Investment Tax Guide : An Investor's Resource for Smart Tax Planning Throughout the Year (Paperback)
I was a great introductory to the basic tax issues to investors. It gives several tips that pay off immeadiately, and opens doors to things to consider and read further upon. It was a quick read, and easy to understand. A good followup, book is the 'Ernst & Young Tax Saver's Guide'.

I know the Fool tries to simplify things, but . . ., February 17, 1999

This review is from: Motley Fool Investment Tax Guide : An Investor's Resource for Smart Tax Planning Throughout the Year (Paperback)
this is probably too simplified. I foolishly (note the lower case "f") assumed this book would be as great as the Fool's other publications, and never checked, say, the amount of pages the book has (the deal was too good . . .). I was a bit disappointed when all I got in the mail was a mere pamphlet. The IRS website is actually more helpful. Still, the book is an ok start to considering investment tax strategies, and will make the unknowing reader knowing enough to tackle more hefty guides.

Very Useful, Easy to Understand and Charmingly Written, March 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Motley Fool Investment Tax Guide : An Investor's Resource for Smart Tax Planning Throughout the Year (Paperback)
As someone who began investing four years ago and began doing my own taxes just one year ago, I found this tax guide to be extremely informative. It is a quick and enjoyable read - perhaps an unsurpassed feat for a tax guide - with lots of helpful examples. This tax guide provided great tips for dealing with my taxes this year (i.e., what to do with that one worthless security) as well as numerous ideas for how to plan my investment strategies in the future. It also contained the most understandable explanation of the New Roth IRA that I have read this year. I highly recommend this tax guide to anyone who invests. I certainly feel more confident about preparing this year's tax return. Indeed, in a strange way I am almost looking forward to doing my taxes now.

Superficial, simplistic and sloppy, February 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Motley Fool Investment Tax Guide : An Investor's Resource for Smart Tax Planning Throughout the Year (Paperback)
It won't take you long to read this book cover to cover as it barely has 100 pages of information, especially if you choose to ignore the numerous, gratuitous plugs for online investing and the author's website. The book also suffers from a lack of expertise on the part of the authors who appear to have little relevant professional background in the tax field. Authors also wrongly criticize contributing to retirement accounts again in their efforts to convince you to manage your own portfolio through their website. Their numerous arguments against mutual funds are ludicrous and laughable. By comparison, they make it sound is if you'll never have taxable profits buying your own stocks! Hardly worth even the discounted $12 Amazon price for so little useful information and incorrect advice.

Disappointing. Very short and incomplete. The book continously refers the reader to the Internal Revenue Code. If I read the Internue Revenue Code why will I need the book? Got no index. It seems like it was written in a week.

Great primer on how the IRS treats your Investments, January 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Motley Fool Investment Tax Guide : An Investor's Resource for Smart Tax Planning Throughout the Year (Paperback)
This book paid for itself immediately for me. I was unaware that it was kosher to adjust the cost basis in an investment by the commissions charged on its sale! The authors really put the IRS jargon into English for all to comprehend, proving that even taxes can get Foolish.

an easily-accessible reference, December 24, 1998

This review is from: Motley Fool Investment Tax Guide : An Investor's Resource for Smart Tax Planning Throughout the Year (Paperback)
This year is the first year I have been managing my own investments without relying on a full-priced broker for advice. I am a regular at The Motley Fool site, and there is a wealth of tax information there, but written in layman's terms, instead of the I.R.S.'s confusing language. I'm not a tax expert, so I don't know how thorough the information here was, but I came away with a firm understanding of the tax repercussions of my investments. Especially during the end of the year here, I find myself referring back to this book continually to help me make end-of-the-year tax decisions--and now I know what to keep in mind for a fresh start next year. I'm glad to have bought it, just to have something handy to flip through, since wading through information and bookmarks online can be time consuming. I've already used this book avoid stupid, tax-inefficient investing, which has saved me the price of the book many times over in taxes.

Most readable tax book, February 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Motley Fool Investment Tax Guide : An Investor's Resource for Smart Tax Planning Throughout the Year (Paperback)
I had never done our taxes. But after reading this most simple and informative book, I am going to try my hand at doing our taxes. I am a 66-year-old woman, and not good at these things. But I shall try this year. This book explained a lot of things for me, so now I'm more confident. (It was entertaining, too!)

Lightweight and highly biased, February 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Motley Fool Investment Tax Guide : An Investor's Resource for Smart Tax Planning Throughout the Year (Paperback)
I was looking for a meaty tax guide and should have known better than to buy a 94 page book! The authors spend most of the book bashing mutual funds and praising stock picking while using twisted and contorted logic to brainwash the reader. Tax decisions are rarely simply but these authors seem to think they are.
