3.0 out of 5 stars No Originality; Just Fun Music...
After seeing the video for "Down" on Headbanger's Ball and not thinking much of it the first few times, it began to grow on me around the third time. Before they played "Down" again, they played their new video for the superior song "Suffocate" with clips from "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" mixed in, as it is also on that soundtrack...

After reading about these guys in a rock/metal magazine, I decided to give this band a try. They sounded like something I'd like. So, I picked up Motograter's self-titled album a few days ago. What were the results? I was very, VERY pleased with the overall product. Not a single cent was wasted on the purchase of this exciting and thrilling album that gives you great heavy music with an edge.

What do the boys sound like? Think of Mudvayne, Slipknot, Mushroomhead, and Disturbed. That should give you a pretty good impression of their sound. Now, don't get the wrong idea and think they are rip offs of all of the bands mentioned. Not at all. In fact, I think they do a great job of constructing their own sound and look. Comparisons are always going to be made, but they show that they are able to come up with their own music that leaves a very big impression on you.

The band does a great job of balancing the yelling and singing. This is one of the great ways that they keep all of the songs fresh and avoid sounding redundant or tiring. The guitar and drum playing really stands out, too. They know when to cut back and when to go in full force. The overall product is great and heavy music.

There are actually only 11 songs on the album (I'm not sure if there's a hidden track/song, so I will have to look into that). The other half of the album are short intros to each songs. You'll notice that the intros are titled the same way as the real songs, except backwards. They give you a good lead into the songs and do not overstay their welcome. While all of the songs are great, my favorites are "suffocate," "down," "wrong," "fight," "collapse," and "prophecies." I love all of the songs, but those are the ones that stick out the most. "No name" is a great soft and mellow song that helps balances the album out. "Red" has a very big Marilyn Manson influence in it, and it works.

All in all, I think this band has very high potential. "Motograter" is a great album that offered me everything I was looking for and more. If you're looking for a hard-hitting album with some excellent music with edge, this might be the thing for you. Definitely worth checking out.

After seeing this band at Ozzfest in Mtn. View, California, I was convinced that purchasing their album would be a good idea. I had previously downloaded the tracks "Down" and "Suffocate" (which are both included on the album), and I was pleasantly surprised. The lead singer, Ghost, came on stage looking like Satan's stunt double, screaming like a banshee on steroids. If you're up and ready for a more than decent nu-metal album, get Motograter. My personal favorite tracks are "Down" and "Wrong". Check out Motograter at Ozzfest in your city, but in the meantime, just listen to this album... You will NOT be disappointed. Trust me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wade's Review of MOTOGRATER, January 2, 2007
This review is from: Motograter (Audio CD)
This is one of the best albums I have ever heard in my life. I first heard their music in late 2003 when I played NASCAR Thunder 2004. I heard this song on it and I was like, OMG, that song is awesome! The song was "Down", which in my opinion is their best song, and my favorite of all time. Then a couple months later I bought their CD at Fye for like $22. Trust me, it was well worth it. I have the CD to this day too. Not one song ever got old, especially "Down". Nearly every single one of their songs are awesome. My favorites are Collapse, Prophecies, Wrong, Red, Get Back, Mutiny, and of course the most popular, Down. The entire CD is awesome. The drummer is the best I have ever heard, the singer has an excellent voice and can sing many different tones with precision, and the guitars are perfect. I'm telling you, go find this CD at the mall soon! You will be very amazed when you see that this no-name band could possibly one of the best of all time. And PLEASE listen to the most awesome song ever, Down!! Rock on MOTOGRATER!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutly Amazed, December 20, 2005
This review is from: Motograter (Audio CD)
I had never once heard of these guys until I was checking out the bonus material on the newly released Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie with Jessica Biel's fine ass. But I just happened to run across a music video on the bonus material by a band called Motograter and it was there song "Suffocate" so i was like what the hell and hit play. I must have played that song and Video for hours. I then decided on a blind whim to go to Circuit City and see if by chance i could find it. Much to my amazement I did. They had one copy so i bought it for 6.99. Who can go wrong with a 7 dollar cd in all honesty? Well not a single cent of this 7 dollars that i spend was a waste. Here it is 2005 and im ready for a new release, but on the same token by no stretch of the imagination did this cd get old or boring for the 2 years I have owned it. This is one of the best blind buys I think I have ever made.

For i'm sure the many of you that have no idea of this band and have no knowledge of them and are reading both my reviews as the others on here. Go out and pick this up. I guarentee you if you like your stuff hard and heavy you will LOVE this band as much as i do.

GO OUT AND SUPPORT THESE GUYS THEY ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!!

MUCH THANKS TO YOU CIRCUIT CITY!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Just One Question: Where Can I Buy A Motograter?, June 30, 2005
This review is from: Motograter (Audio CD)
When you take a listen to Motograter's self titled debut, you're gonna hear a lot of familiar sounds. Not only does their image, along with their goofy stage names, look like they were taken from the trash can after Mudvayne threw them away, but they also have the melodic heavy metal sound that is used by many other bands, masked or unmasked. No mistaking, this is a nu-metal disc, but a damn good one at that. Motograter have a very tight sound that you will click into instantly after the first song, "Suffocate" starts up.

Part of what sets Motograter apart from the nu-metal pack, and most other bands, is that they have no bassist. Where the bass would normally go, a new instrument called -- brace yourself -- Motograter, takes it's place. It's hard to place the sound sometimes, but after you listen to this CD, and listen to another, similar group, you will notice a difference. Whatever the gimmick, this is still an solid debut. Each track is bridged by an interlude, meaning out of the 22 tracks here, only 11 of them are songs, with the highlights being the quick and catchy "Collapse" and "Suffocate," and the more subtle and intelligent "Down" and "Prophecies." Not all of the songs are hits, but it's an easy listen.

Anyone who digs this kind of music will be instantly pleased by Motograter. Sure, their sound is nothing that Mudvayne, or even the late Ultraspank didn't deliver before, but it's a sound not often heard these days, and for that, it's refreshing. This album was released in 2003, which means it's about time for a new album. The band are currently on hiatus, but let's hope they get busy soon and give us new music.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fresh Trip to the Grocery Store., August 8, 2004

Gunther Haagendazs (Up High in the Trees) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Motograter (Audio CD)
Motograter is one of the few "Nu-Metal" bands that I enjoy listening to. The reasons why they intrigued me are that they have 2 drummers (1 who switches between drums and keyboards) and they had invented their own instrument, the Motograter. My first listen was when I downloaded Suffocate and Down, having no clue what they sounded like. (I don't listen to the radio so I didn't realize these were the singles.) The guitars here are standard Nu-metal, with just being heavy and no solos. While there is no Bass Credited, (and there clearly is) I believe the guitarist Nuke (who left after recording) played both. It wasn't until afterwards that they got a Bass Player.

It's the Drums that are the best part of Motograter. I enjoy listening to anything with multiple drummers, or odd instruments, so this was, as the saying goes, killing 2 birds with 1 stone. The Problem that people might have with listening to the album is that it's hard to determine just what the Motograter sounds like. It's made of cables, gears, metal, chains and is played with one drum stick while the other hand moves the cables. Kind of like a Drum guitar combo set because it has notes. And you don't get a good look at what it looks like either. Look on the internet and you will see better pictures.

The vocalist has a good range and I've read somewhere that he is a failed Priest. He manages to pull off the alternation of singing and screaming. He also writes good lyrics. The song No Name is about how people like Mozart are buried with no name. Mozart, I believe is actually buried under a gas station right now.

As for the songs presented here on the Album; they're great. I can listen all the way through without pushing the skip button. Some people are p*ssed because each song has its own short intro. Some are good and some are not. I don't care; I always listen to the intros as they kind of build up and into the songs. But, what may have been a better idea, would be for them to have a couple of intros of only the Motograter playing so people have a better understanding of what it sounds like. Maybe they will do that on the next album.

People bash Motograter as being a Slipknot/Mushroomhead/Mudvayne/Whatever Clone with the whole Tribal Makeup. In my opinion, Their image goes with their music. The whole Tribal element. Slipknot has a Drummer and 2 Percussionists, The difference here is that Motograter makes better use of the extra guys and they are all going at the same time. Slipknot doesn't. A large amount of the time, the 2 percussionists, Sampler and DJ just mess around on stage or are muffled into the background on the recordings. That isn't here. Motograter makes use of what they have. Like I said, the second drummer alternates between his drums and Keyboards or samples.

I am looking forward to their next release; the only real reason why I have given 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's difficult to hear the Motograter. So I guess this is more like a 4.5 star rating. Overall it's a solid Buy. I hope this helped. If you agree with anything I have said and/or enjoy music done differently, then Motograter is a band for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid debut from nu-metal newcomers, June 30, 2003

I saw the video for "Down" on Fuse and became intrigued. I picked up the album when it came out and was not disappointed. Be advised, though, as this is definitely a nu-metal album. If you are a hater of this genre, you should definitely avoid this one. But if you like nu, you should check this album out. The vocal delivery is great, as are the rhythms and grooves of the songs themselves. The guitar lines are rather simple, rhythmic structures. Not boring, but not technically complex. Some interesting and weird sound effects are thrown in here and there. Overall, this is a very solid debut album from an interesting nu-metal band, comparable to Mudvayne, Flaw, and Nonpoint. If you dig those bands, go pick this one up.

I've had this CD for about 6 month's and I really like it A LOT! One of the things that suprised me most, was the singer's ability to go either heavy or soft nu-metal. Since I dont own any Slipnot or Mushroomhead (sounds like?), I had nothing to fear as far as Motograter copying from them. This CD is strong enough to stand on its own as a quality effort.

The only thing I did not like about this CD was the intro's before each song. I had to record the CD over so I could listen to my collection in 'random' mode.

After repeated listens to this album, I've come to the conclusion that it was worth my hard earned. Good solid rock album, but definitely not anything ground-breakingly new. Standout tracks to me are Suffocate, Down & Collapse. Worth a listen if you're into heavy rock of any kind.
