Book Description

Golden Age S. March 1, 2005
This book features extraordinary images of motor racing which give a unique insight into this most dangerous and exhilarating of sports. "Motor Racing The Golden Age" is a unique collection of over 275 images from the last century of racing. Following the design, format and idea of the successful "Football: The Golden Age", this book celebrates all aspects of the motor racing world - the drivers, the fans, the race tracks, the cars, the crashes and pit-stops. It goes further to look at the history behind motor racing - the hill climbs, rallies through cities and even the land speed records. "Motor Racing: The Golden Age" remembers when the cars were fast, the drivers were furious and the photographers the bravest men on the track - a true golden age of both sport and photography.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This oversize book is a treasure trove of photographs gleaned from a variety of archival sources, all having car racing as their subject matter. The "golden age" to which the title refers is the period during which the "art" of car-racing photography stood at its dynamic finest: from the early years of the twentieth century to the 1970s. The black-and-white images offered in this album give intriguing aerial views of racetracks, informal snaps of famous drivers in action or in repose, a fun shot of drivers "recuperating" postrace at a Monte Carlo cafe, and several that capture loss-of-control accidents. Fast-paced action and fearless personalities leap from these pages. Introduced with spirit and style by world-renowned driver Jackie Stewart, this is a gripping book for car and sports enthusiasts. 4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Pics But Lacks Organization, January 31, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Motor Racing: The Golden Age: Extraordinary Images from 1900 to 1970 (Golden Age S.) (Hardcover)
This coffee-table sized book has a lot of excellent pics of European, and, to a lesser extent, American, auto racing from the early 1900's to the late 1960's. We see pics of the cars, the races, the circuits, the drivers, the spectators, the accidents, and the personalities. There is virtually no text apart from the captions, so many of the pictures raise more questions than they answer. ("How did that race car end up on the roof of that house? What was that house doing so close to a race track? Or is it a house? And what happened to the driver?") The pics are thus excellent fuel for the imagination and for further research.

Fans of racing in the 50's and 60's might be disappointed - as I was - that more than half of the pics are from the pre-1950's era. Also, the fact that the pics are not in chronological order - or in any order or grouping - makes it hard to find a particular pic that you might want to show someone.

Still, it's a good price for a book of this size, and the pics are very good, even if weighted towards the old, old days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book if you only look for beautiful pics of classic cars, October 22, 2008

This review is from: Motor Racing: The Golden Age: Extraordinary Images from 1900 to 1970 (Golden Age S.) (Hardcover)
I bought this book the last year and I'm very happy with it.

This book is full of very nice, or at least interesting, pics, mostly coming from the first fifty years of motor racing. There are a lot of black & white pictures which would deserve to be not only on this book, but out and hung in a wall :)

If you're looking for something to read about that period this is not your book though, as the only text is the one used to comment each picture briefly.

Apart of the quality of the pics, it has a lot of them indeed. Besides, the book itself is hardcover (I love the way the cover looks) and is well made. So it worths each cent it costs.

In fact, I think is quite cheap, considering the amount of content it has and the price of other books which offer much less than this one.

So, if you're looking a good book of the 'golden years' of motorsports which deserve to be opened from time to time, this one will make you feel captivated again for these cars in the blink of an eye.

Regards

5.0 out of 5 stars Motor racing fans will find it a top-notch survey leaving little out, September 9, 2006
This review is from: Motor Racing: The Golden Age: Extraordinary Images from 1900 to 1970 (Golden Age S.) (Hardcover)
The price tag may seem weighty but actually represents a bargain for an outstanding book packed with nearly three hundred vintage images taken from the last century of auto racing in Motor Racing: The Golden Age. Here you'll find some of the most stunning photos of the last century of racing: many have never been seen before, and accompany original and insightful history. Motor racing fans will find it a top-notch survey leaving little out.
