Racing the High Country
Like all the games in the MotorStorm series, MotorStorm: Arctic Edge aims to deliver brutal, arcade style off-road racing, in this occasion in the breathtaking yet lethal and unpredictable setting of Alaska. Although the game features racing over all sorts of terrain, the majority of the action is set up and down high mountain slopes where plummeting temperatures ensure that there will be plenty, although varied levels of snow and ice. These conditions become more and more prominent as the game progresses and subsequent tracks take racers higher into the mountains. Yet as difficult and challenging as racing in these winter conditions is, the snow and ice is also designed to also be used to racer's advantage if they so choose. For example, the slopes above the game's 12 reversible tracks contain the capacity for sudden avalanches. These can be accidentally set off by the loud crash or explosions of vehicles, but can also be intentionally initiated by a well-timed horn. This means that a close competitor(s) that can't be shaken through driving skills alone can feasibly be buried in the snow with the blow of the horn. The caveat is that avalanches can also engulf the horn blower as well, so timing is everything. Ice bridges are another winter related feature that can be used to the racers' advantage. As the tracks wind up the mountain at higher elevations these arches will become more prominent, but they are not necessarily as stable as they might appear. This means that larger vehicles can feasibly destroy them before competitors can cross them and their remnants can even come crashing down on racers from above. Racers coming off turbo bursts will also quickly learn that the snowbanks found throughout the game can be used, just like the waterfalls in earlier MotorStorm games, to cool off engines headed towards a boil over. Together these inhospitable environments make for some of the most fun and challenging races Stormers have ever faced.

The Vehicles
Action in MotorStorm: Arctic Edge takes place across three different racing altitudes. This means a variety of terrain and thus a variety of vehicle classes. Players of previous games in the series will recognize the inclusion of most of the classes from those games, including Bikes, ATVs, Buggies, Rally Cars, and Pluggers, but with grip at a premium, two new vehicles have been introduced to combat the ice, the cold and the snow - the Snowcat and the Snow Machine. With ice, heavy snow and destructible bridges a real factor in the game one has the power and size to blast through packed snow, while the other has the grip and pace to combat most of what the subzero conditions can throw at it. Regardless of the vehicle chosen, players can personalize their rides in the livery by updating with a selection of various parts including wheels, exhaust, spoilers, and sponsorship stickers.

Multiplayer and Photo Modes
Racing requires competition. With that in mind MotorStorm: Arctic Edge provides plenty of racing options. All race types, including the single player option, accommodate up to eight vehicles. This keeps the racing frantic, without slowing down the game's frame rate. Players can also take the action online competing against each other wirelessly via the Ad Hoc Mode on the PSP, or by using Infrastructure Mode to make it to the summit of the online global leaderboards. Racers can also immortalize the moments of their greatest triumphs and defeats by activating Photo Mode which allows you to snap and save the best action photos and send to friends online.

Create Your own Soundtracks
Have a set of tunes that you want to race to? MotorStorm: Arctic Edge lets players take advantage of the PSP's expandable memory to add music from a memory stick and create a full list of customized tunes to inspire each race as they choose.

Key Game Features

  • Frigid Alaskan Environments - Tracks are modeled after the rugged Alaskan landscape featuring a unique blend of narrow mountain passes, giant ice caves, long ice bridges, and treacherous terrain. Players must battle through each race facing a number of weather conditions including snow, rain, and wind.
  • New Vehicles - In addition to the six vehicle classes from the previous MotorStorm games players gain access to new vehicles classes available specifically to tackle the Alaskan terrain including the nimble Snow Machine (snowmobile) and more forceful Snow Cat.
  • New Tracks - 12 available tracks that show off the unpredictable nature of the rough Alaskan setting. Each of the tracks will be accessible to race in reverse for added race variety.
  • Multiplayer Racing Action - Up to eight player online as well as ad hoc racing. Global leaderboards are available to show off the top ranked players in all game modes as well as single player Time Attack.
  • Bobsleigh corners - Vehicles power, slip, and spin through a variety of icy structures with only boost to provide control.
  • Avalanches - Snow-baked terrain brings the imminent hazard of avalanches, triggered by players sounding their horn.
  • Collapsing Ice Bridges - Travel over these in a heavy vehicle and risk the chance of it collapsing behind you.
  • Customize Vehicles - Players can personalize each vehicle in the livery by updating with a selection of various parts including wheels, exhaust, spoilers, and sponsorship stickers. Players can also create their own liveries from a set of base patterns and decals.
  • Photo Mode - Snap and save the best action photos and send to friends online.
  • Artificial Intelligence - A.I. analyzes the race and surroundings and reacts in the most realistic manner possible. Not only will the competition try to win the race at all costs, but the AI will react to situations realistically, such as locating the best routes and changing the level of driving aggression based on player actions.
  • Attacking and Offensive Driving - Players must not only try to win the race but survive against the other racers. Combat-like racing takes center stage as the vehicles are the weapons.
  • Soundtrack - Players will have the opportunity to add music from a memory stick to create a full list of customized tunes to inspire each race.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Racing game for PSP or PSP Go October 7, 2009
Platform for Display:Sony PSP
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I downloaded this game from the PSN store and have been playing it for a few days now and all I have to say it is Awesome!! This game plays almost exactly as the PS3 Motorstorm games. You can play up to 4 friends via ad-hoc mode and unlike Gran Turismo, you can actually play online too via infrastructure mode. There are cars, bikes, snow plows, buggys and trucks to choose from and you can customize the look of your vehicle as you win races and get points. The graphics are very, very good, maybe not PS3 good, but for a psp game it looks top notch. The game also runs pretty smooth, although I did run across some slow down when playing in ad-hoc and online, but nothing much to complain. I have played Gran Turismo and Need for Speed Shift, and this is by far the most fun racer out there for the psp. Definitely no sim.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great addition to the motorstorm family. November 3, 2009
Platform for Display:Sony PSP
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I recently bought this game from the playstation network service on amazon and downloaded it.

I made my profile and started off by browsing the cars. The cars are really detailed and impressive, there are all of the cars from MotorStorm Pacific Rift (of course with different variations) with the addition of two new arctic-themed cars, the snowmobile and the snow-plow, which by the way are awesome. There is also the ability to customize your car by upgrading the parts (e.g. wheels, spoiler) with kits that you unlock with the completion of races in story mode and to change the colors of many different parts of the vehicle, it's lots of fun turning the huge truck pink. I customized my bike and made it red and blue I was pretty impressed at how easy it was to change the color of all the different parts of bike.

Then I played a race, the gameplay and controls are almost the exact same as the PS3 games. The graphics were mind blowing even though there was the occasional glitch or flaw, but nothing to worry about. The crashes were well done with the option to take a virtual picture of them with the camera and save that picture to your PSP's memory stick, I love how in the camera mode you can virtually skim by all of the bits and pieces of the wreck flying out of the sceen, it delivers a new dimension of realism. Then there's the track design, the track design is so genius and well though out, it has Gran Turismo sulking in the corner. The tracks have high paths and low paths, higher paths for lighter vehicles (like the motorcycle) and lower paths for the heavier vehicles (like the snow-plow).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game! Must Read Review! August 22, 2014
By Andrew
Platform for Display:Sony PSP
This game is a must-have for PSP, and was my first game. I have "Motorstorm" and "Motorstorm-Pacific Rift", and they're fun, but this one is far better in my opinion. You can customize vehicles, which there are endless possibilities to. Here is my list of Pros and Cons:

Pros:

Pretty easy controls, and you can change controls between 2 different types.

Cool music, and you can add your own music to the music playlist.

Cool vehicles, and you can customize them any way you want, from Lights to Spoilers, and even Luggage!

Lots of shortcuts, which are nice if you want to get ahead really quick.

There are Special Packs you can unlock by taking pictures in "Photo Mode" of emblems that come in the shape of "Killzone", "Pursuit Force", "Little-Big-Planet", and "WipeOut", and the first 2 I mentioned give you a new driver.

Instead of "Trophies" on a PS3 System, you have "Badges", which you can view in the "Garage".

Cons:

As you go further along in the "Festival", it gets harder after Rank 6, and you have to do a race nearly 3 times to get first place. The invitationals, such as "Bad Altitude", are EXTREMELY difficult, and I am still working on it myself, as it is in Rank 8.

There are some glitches that happen, such as the "Slingshot" glitch, in which if even one AI Driver is knocked out of place, such as a crash, they will boost to impossible speeds to get back ahead, which makes winning the race for you a challenging feat. I witnessed this happen on "Wolfpack Mountain", and he was probably at least a lap ahead of me by the time he stopped boosting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arctic Edge great way to wait for Motorstorm 3 May 22, 2010
Platform for Display:Sony PSP|Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I have had this since it first came out in fall of 2009 and still play it one the best psp racing games and games period out. It has features like a full ps3 game has multiple vehicles cars, snow plows, buggies, motorcycles, has online play, has friends list, has trophies, has voice chat, has custom soundtracks only game since gta games, plus tons of levels to play. Im still playing it. Its a shame great games like this wipeout, syphon filter, littlebigplanet psp, killzone psp, jak and daxter psp, resistance psp, havent sold a lot they are all cutting edge games compared to ds games. And with modnation psp coming out you can make tracks and mods and carts, just like ps3 system. With that and metal gear its gonna be a good summer. Back to my point though motorstorm arctic edge is a great game and i love still listening to my music while racing it is challenging too. Also i like its different than ps3 with the snow and has environmental hazards like avalanches happening maybe theyll have more of that when motorstorm 3 is released soon. Definitely buy.
