Awesome Racing game for PSP or PSP Go,

I downloaded this game from the PSN store and have been playing it for a few days now and all I have to say it is Awesome!! This game plays almost exactly as the PS3 Motorstorm games. You can play up to 4 friends via ad-hoc mode and unlike Gran Turismo, you can actually play online too via infrastructure mode. There are cars, bikes, snow plows, buggys and trucks to choose from and you can customize the look of your vehicle as you win races and get points. The graphics are very, very good, maybe not PS3 good, but for a psp game it looks top notch. The game also runs pretty smooth, although I did run across some slow down when playing in ad-hoc and online, but nothing much to complain. I have played Gran Turismo and Need for Speed Shift, and this is by far the most fun racer out there for the psp. Definitely no sim.

I recently bought this game from the playstation network service on amazon and downloaded it.
I made my profile and started off by browsing the cars. The cars are really detailed and impressive, there are all of the cars from MotorStorm Pacific Rift (of course with different variations) with the addition of two new arctic-themed cars, the snowmobile and the snow-plow, which by the way are awesome. There is also the ability to customize your car by upgrading the parts (e.g. wheels, spoiler) with kits that you unlock with the completion of races in story mode and to change the colors of many different parts of the vehicle, it's lots of fun turning the huge truck pink. I customized my bike and made it red and blue I was pretty impressed at how easy it was to change the color of all the different parts of bike. Then I played a race, the gameplay and controls are almost the exact same as the PS3 games. The graphics were mind blowing even though there was the occasional glitch or flaw, but nothing to worry about. The crashes were well done with the option to take a virtual picture of them with the camera and save that picture to your PSP's memory stick, I love how in the camera mode you can virtually skim by all of the bits and pieces of the wreck flying out of the sceen, it delivers a new dimension of realism. Then there's the track design, the track design is so genius and well though out, it has Gran Turismo sulking in the corner. The tracks have high paths and low paths, higher paths for lighter vehicles (like the motorcycle) and lower paths for the heavier vehicles (like the snow-plow). They truly live up to the motorstorm legacy. The story mode is basically a series of races and other challenges going up a huge spiral. Whenever you win one of the races, you get points (more or less depending on your position) you can use those points to unlock more races, ranks, and bonus videos. There's also the occasional car, car kit (parts to customise a car), and the occational paint option (to give your cars a new look). The story mode has more than just races too, there's also timed-challenges, and gate challenges (basically you need to drive through a bunch of different gates layed out on different parts of the track). You can also race with a friend with the ad-hoc mode. It's very fast and nicely done, and most importantly fun, it was a blast laughing at a huge crash me and my friend caused that ended up destroying 5 different cars! A feature that I like about this game is how it has many features that you's normally expect in a playstation 3 game. First off there are acheivements with many different goals like winning a race without boosting. I noticed that in the acheivements there were 3 for getting the LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, and wipeout themed emblems, I have yet to find out what they are. Another feature that was very impressive was the online racing mode. The races required almost no loading and were very fun, and if you happen to meet a new person that you like, you can add them as a friend on the Playstation 3 from your PSP. Speaking of PSN friends, there's the option to view your friends list and to start a race with another friend also playing motorstorm arctic edge. In conclusion, Motorstorm Arctic Edge is a great addition to the Motorstorm family. It has it's flaws here and there, but those are blurred out by the impressive track design and the addition of an online mode.

Awesome at first, but then rising difficulty brings out its flaws,

The first six or so hours of gameplay were awesome, and I definitely thought it was up there with Burnout Revenge as the most fun racing games I've ever played. The tracks were exciting, the variety in vehicles, and the ability to choose great, and the handling awesome.
However, after the six hour mark, or by rank 4, the difficulty gets unreasonable--you'll be playing for 45 minutes to try to beat one race. And you need to get first place in most races to unlock vehicles and levels. The number of races seems never-ending, and there is little variety between them, and there is nothing in a way of progression like there is in Burnout, so it's just frustration without reward--there is nothing to keep you playing past the first couple of days. But it's not that the opponents driving gets better--you can adjust to that. It's just that you realize all the problems with the game. They usually force you to choose a vehicle class that you may not like. Then they throw you in a race against vehicles that have an advantage over you, so you keep crushing, because you have to ride a bike and everyone else is in a truck and they keep smashing you from behind, pushing you off cliffs, etc, or you can't catch up, because you're in a truck and everyone else is in rally cars and buggies. You always start in last place, which is a problem especially when you're forced to drive vehicles with slow acceleration. Then, there's limited control when driving. There are a ton of jumps on every track, but usually you have to take off the ramp at a very specific angle that is not obvious--all the other angles will set you flying for a wall--halfway to it, you will realize it, but you can't do anything. On many turns, you will also crash every time unless you take a particular trajectory. Bottom line is, you have to memorize the courses to win, but even then, if you're forced to drive a smaller vehicle, bigger vehicles will often throw you off course in important places, screwing you over. So, basically, it's absolutely a blast the first couple of days, where the difficulty is good and the flaws of the game are no big deal, but after that, the game gets difficult and frustrating.

The game is a lot of fun, it has pretty good graphics and great controls. It is a little hard. I haven't been able to beat it. It plays just like the other Motorstorm games. Must have for PSP owners.

I love Pacific Rift on my PS3. This is a good holdover, but it's kind of hard to see where you are going on the psp.

I have had this since it first came out in fall of 2009 and still play it one the best psp racing games and games period out. It has features like a full ps3 game has multiple vehicles cars, snow plows, buggies, motorcycles, has online play, has friends list, has trophies, has voice chat, has custom soundtracks only game since gta games, plus tons of levels to play. Im still playing it. Its a shame great games like this wipeout, syphon filter, littlebigplanet psp, killzone psp, jak and daxter psp, resistance psp, havent sold a lot they are all cutting edge games compared to ds games. And with modnation psp coming out you can make tracks and mods and carts, just like ps3 system. With that and metal gear its gonna be a good summer. Back to my point though motorstorm arctic edge is a great game and i love still listening to my music while racing it is challenging too. Also i like its different than ps3 with the snow and has environmental hazards like avalanches happening maybe theyll have more of that when motorstorm 3 is released soon. Definitely buy.
