5.0 out of 5 stars A kid from a broken home on a epic journey worth $500million
I stopped counting the number of times i've watched Motorama after 56. It is the Godfather of all independent films, with it's vividly strange scenes. Put the $.79 bag of cheap popcorn in the microwave and get ready for a trip into the very heart of twisted bizarre insanity! The story of Motorama is pretty basic, a kid from a broken home steals a classic 1965 candy...

3.0 out of 5 stars Childhood trama, you know i love it
If there ever was a funky movie, this would be it. Definately not for everyone, so rent before you even think about buying. The disc is very good quality, no real image quality problems to speak of. The sound was fine, i didnt really notice any problems or any spectacular moments. Extras are pretty much non existant, so dont buy it expecting anything but the movie itself...

I stopped counting the number of times i've watched Motorama after 56. It is the Godfather of all independent films, with it's vividly strange scenes. Put the $.79 bag of cheap popcorn in the microwave and get ready for a trip into the very heart of twisted bizarre insanity! The story of Motorama is pretty basic, a kid from a broken home steals a classic 1965 candy apple red mustang and goes on a quest to collect all the Motorama cards, you get Motorama game cards with every purchase of $5 worth of gasoline from any Chimera station. If you get all 8 of the letters that spell out "Motorama" you are elegible for the grand prize of $500million! With that kind of money Gus could leave his disgusting abusive parents behind and live the good life. Gus cashes in his pennies for gas money, steals a mustang and heads off in search of the illusive Motorama cards. Everything seems normal and your waiting for a state trooper to see this 10 year old driving an expensive classic car and take him to Juvenille Hall. But after gus washes his face in a little creek off the side of the road, you find that you along with Gus have taken one step too many, crossed into the world of the bizarre and there's no turning back baby! The twisted and dimented characters, along with the open landscape and dark shadows that mirror reality make Motorama a classic among independent movie fans. Gus is on a quest, an odyssey through the most exotic of imaginations, come hell or highwater he's gonna get those cards and you better just give him his space! I highly recommend this movie for anyone with a wild imagination and an open mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars MOTORAMA Rocks. The end. Amen., May 18, 2006

I first saw this movie around 12 or 13 years ago. I watched it at least a dozen times, but lost track of it. I just found out it's out on DVD so I ordered it today. It's one of the strangest movies I have ever seen. I love it. You can't be a prude if you're going to watch this movie. If you're easily offended by FICTION, or super-sensitive to FICTION, then don't watch this movie.
I don't see any "deep meaning" behind the movie. It really makes no sense. But take that into mind if you see it. I get sick of hearing people complain about movies, saying such things as: "That movie wasn't realistic." What is the point of seeing a movie if you want everything to be realistic? Might as well videotape yourself eating cereal for 2 hours and watch it every night for entertainment.

If you have a good sense of humor and you'd like a break in monotony, watch this movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Odd movie....but what a film to view, August 10, 2005
This review is from: Motorama (DVD)
I have read several reviews of this film, where people are saying, "I don't get it." "What's the point?".

Some have labeled "Motorama" as the worst movie they've ever seen.

I feel sorry those who possess such a miniscule scope of imagination when it comes to the world of cinema.

At the end of the film.... wasn't Gus back where he started? And what does this normally tell us has happened? Was it actually something that he experienced.... or something he dreamed/imagined?

No... this is not a cinematic masterpiece. In fact, there is one scene in which the editing is so terrible, they literally missed a huge on-screen error. During the gas station scene (which is set in the middle of "no-where, Canada"), the attendant is supposedly alone when Gus arrives. Gus cuts the man's kite string... the man runs down the barren highway.... then lo and behold... on the left-hand side of the screen we can see several people running beside the road as well. Obviously, the director thought they were out of sight for the camera... but they weren't... and this stood out to me as a huge error in the film.

But the story itself is unlike any other. It should be noted that even those who have complained and whined and panned this movie.... most have admitted that they sat and watched the entire film. Why? Because this movie is mesmerizing to view. Whether someone wishes to admit it or not, it is literally impossible to get up and walk away from this film. And the reason is quite simple.... it's fascinating to the mind.... and we don't know where the story is going to take us next. Seems to me, that is a key element of success in any work of art.... in film or otherwise.

Although "Motorama" does star a 10-year-old boy in the lead role, this is definitely not a film for children.

And for those hoping to see Drew Barrymore, her role in this film is not likely more than 30 seconds.

I am willing to admit that this film drew me in from the start, and I never paused the film to grab a soda or snack. At times startling, often shocking to view.... I still believe this movie is a success, because of its ability to captivate.

If there ever was a funky movie, this would be it. Definately not for everyone, so rent before you even think about buying. The disc is very good quality, no real image quality problems to speak of. The sound was fine, i didnt really notice any problems or any spectacular moments. Extras are pretty much non existant, so dont buy it expecting anything but the movie itself. The film is strange, as stated before the 10 year old boy runs away from home, and goes cross country in a mythical country, very similar to america or canada. along the way he meets a cast of crazy characters, mostly horribly mean, and starts to play a gasstation game, MOTORAMA. There isnt much more to the movie. It consists of Gus buying/stealing motorama cards then getting beat up, i nthat order for a good hour. Then the ending comes up, and unless you like thinking about your movies your gonna hate the ending. It is very stange, and you kinda have to draw your own conclusion as to whats going on. The ending reminded me of Baron Munchausen's finale. The acting isnt spectaular, the script isnt astounding, but its fun enuff to watch once just for entertainemnt value. rent this when you have nothing better to do o na rainy afternoon. Not really a movie to watch with anyone but a group of film nerds or close friends. Once again rent before you buy. If you can't find it to rent, then make sure you like quirky films before you purchase it. It may not be independent, but it sure feels that way

5.0 out of 5 stars My take on this hard to understand film..., December 19, 2007

First of all, this is not a children's film. Just because you see a kid on the cover doesn't make it a children's film. The cover has nothing to do with the film. Now on to the review...

The best way to view this film is not linear; when you do that you are just watching the journey without understanding it. Yes, 10-year-old Gus (Jordan Christopher Michael) is on a journey. He makes an adult decision to escape the abusive situation at home and from that point the director allows Gus to continue to make adult decisions (although he looks like a kid)... and like real life where we do not always make the best decisions for ourselves, neither does Gus. He steals a car (Mustang convertible) and rides off into a surreal America playing "Motorama," a game sponsored by Chimera Gas Company. But he doesn't go far and he finds a lonely gas station attendant in a small filling station in the middle of no-where who needs some help. This is a pivotal point in the story. Gus is about to make either the right, or the wrong, decision and he makes the wrong one, driving off to pursue his selfish game, his fortune, without any idea of the cost to himself or others. The consequence is a hard troubled journey that cost him not only his eye, but also his youth. In the end when he eventually reaches the Chimera Gas Company with the winning ticket he finds they are not playing by the rules of the game. And neither is life... It's a hard lesson for a young boy to learn. But Gus gets another chance and miraculously he finds himself back at the small filling station in the middle of no-where. The attendant still needs help, and this time Gus makes the right decision and stays. A fascinating film that can be viewed on many levels. I highly recommend it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Motorama : B-Movie with allstar cast, October 4, 2000

Motorama is about 10 year old Gus who steals a car , and runs away from home collecting Motorama cards , if he collects them all he wins 500,000,000 $. Gus is played by Jordan Christopher Michael. the film also features special appearances by Jack Nance as a crazy hotel assistant, Meat Loaf (spectacular singer) as a biker who makes his living by armwrestling for money,Drew Barrymore as a Dream Girl , Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) as a busboy with a couple of loose screws ,Garrett Morris & Micheal J. Polliard as auto-Mechanics.also featuring music by Andy Summers and songs by Range Wars. Not suitable for children due to swearing , brief nudity , & Brief violence. Although the movie is kind of slow moving overall , it is pretty fun to watch out for cameos by some well known actors and singer/actors. it's pretty good

5.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Movie for the Artistic Thinker, December 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Motorama [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie's plot consists of a dream like sequence of events. A small boy is seen driving across America searching for game pieces for the gas station game "Motorama". One can make it a parralell to the American Dream. A well done criticism of the American way of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Born to be wild...?, October 12, 2004

This review is from: Motorama (DVD)
When I first saw this film I was very, very sick and thought it was very confusing but also very funny and interesting. Having seen it now, while well, I have to say it is still very interesting and funny. Everybody is in here, Drew Barrymore, Mear Loaf, Flea and others, but they're all in the background. The real story is about the 10 year old Gus, trying to find out what life is all about. And isn't that what really matters in life? Well, besides lots of money, food and a sexy girlfriend, sure, why not?
I love the feeling of the film, the cars and the landscape. Perfect for messing up a friend's mind.

10-year old Gus (Jordan Christopher Michael) steals a car and travels across a bizarre Southwestern landscape, playing a road game called "Motorama." He encounters many eccentric characters, mostly nasty, and endures all sorts of abuse, growing gradually older until, at the end of his life.... Ignore the idiotic cover; oppressive heterosexism is refreshingly absent here.

I'm not sure if this movie was supposed to have some deep meaning to it, but it was kewl anyways. The plot is fairly basic---young boy travels to different states to collect MOTORAMA cards. Then he gets beat up, loses his eye, and gets tattooed against his wishes. Poor Gus !! Jordan C. Michael is a likeable enough young actor; he doesn't display any real emotions tho. Bass player Flea from the Peppers has a quick cameo.
