Head of the travel book class,
By Lynn Bryce (Burke, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Motorcycle Journeys Through The Appalachians - 2nd Edition (Motorcycle Journeys) (Paperback)
Of all the travel books in my collection, Motorcycle Journeys Through The Appalachians is my favorite. I have not come across another touring guide that covers this part of the country so well. I have sold my bike but still find Motorcycle Journeys to be a great reference for planning a weekend outing with my wife and kids. I would have liked a little more detail in the table of contents but that's a minor wrinkle in light of the value this book delivers. Mileage to waypoints, maps, terrain descriptions, highlights make the trips easy to follow and enjoy. In addition to being very thorough, Coyner's writing style is entertaining and the book is a fun read. If your journeys will take you through the Appalachians, this book is a must-have companion.

It's not just for motorcyclists! A friend gave me this book when I was planning an anniversary trip in Virginia's Appalachian mountains. I found myself not just browsing for information on the area I wanted to visit, but reading the entire book for sheer enjoyment (and annoying my family by reading bits of it out loud to them). Coyner has thoroughly researched every trip and offers timely advice about roads, weather conditions, places of interest, restaurants, etc... Not only is the book useful as a travel guide, it's a hoot to read. I would recommend it to anyone who's planning travels in the Appalachians -- whether you're riding in your car or on a motorcycle.

For me there are three parts to a good trip - the preparation, the adventure itself, and then the memories. This book has helped me a long way in achieving all these pleasure points. The maps and text are wonderful; the crafty photo's with tasty captions peppered appropriately throughout this guide left my partner (who does not accompany me) recommending more sights than I could handle. A keeper, if not just for that.

A "Must" for anyone traveling the Appalachians,

I just finished a ride of a little over 1000 miles from my home in NJ to and through WV and VA. I used this book to guide me on some really terrific roads and through some truly beautiful areas. This was the first long, extended ride I've ever taken and it was in large measure due to the "encouragement" expressed through this well written resource. If you're thinking of traveling through the Appalachians then I would recommend that you purchase and pour through this well written book before you go.

I worked in the motorcycle industry for over 10 years as a service manager and still ride with all my old co-workers.We thought we knew all the best roads in our neck of the woods but we were wrong. We pick a route, get into the middle of nowhere and then get lost. This book has filled in the blanks for us. A must have if you're a real rider.

Motorcycle Journeys Through The Applalachins is a must have book for anyone who lives near the area and loves to travel by cycle. Dale offers "real life" experiences and recommends great roads and interesting information. The book is a valuable tool for anyone who wants to tour the area. It also is a great "winter read" to plan your next trip.

Invaluable!,

I just got back from a near-1000 mile trip through the Appalachians. I used this book to guide me through some thoroughly fascinating and beautiful areas -- the author, Dale Coyner, has create a terrific resource! I am not exaggerating when I say that VA Route 39 has changed my view of the eastern United States (I lived in the West -- Alaska, Utah, and Arizona -- until 2000). I'm sure I won't be the first, but I've set a goal to do all 36 rides in the book.I showed this to the clerk at the bookstore at the Peaks of Otter wayside on the Blue Ridge Parkway. She's a rider, so she took the name of the book down with considerable enthusiasm and pledged to talk to the manager about stocking the book in the store. It seems strange NOT to have your book on the shelves in such a rider's paradise!

i chose this book after searching for another on Amazon. (Yes, I actually look at the "here's what other folks bought" section!) This one looked like it would serve the needs better. Bought this book for both my brother and brother-in-law. Since I wanted to retain a modicum of couth-ness, I did not read it completely before gifting (though I did page through quickly!). This seems like a wonderful planner for them - they have already made trips into PA and TN, and I'm sure they will be inspired by the trips outlined in the book.

Lots of good information here. Some of the material is a little dated (e.g., restaurants that don't exist any more), but most of the information is still valid and still useful. The book is focused more on multi-day touring than day rides, but if that's what you want you won't go wrong using this book as a resource.
