2.0 out of 5 stars It depends on who you're talking to...
I purchased two of these units, given the styling and typical quality of build by Motorola.

I am technically proficient, so I installed both units. While the directions provided were not the best, it was pretty clear what-went-where, so I tackled the projects head on. The one that I put in my wife's 2000 Ford Explorer was a breeze. About 1.5 hours and it was...

I opted for the the HF850 as opposed to the 1000 because my phone had all of the missing features built in, so I didnt really need to spend the extra cash. I have a Motorola E815 phone which I'm also happy with.
I had to remember what buttons did what at first but have sinced gotten everything down (using it for 5 weeks now).
System comes on when I start the truck (gives a beep to let me know its on) and all of my calls are only a press of a button away.
System will disconnect when the call ends automatically.
Don't know how I ever lived without it.
Only problem I had was placement--couldnt find a decent spot in my truck to mount it (uses doubled sided tape). It's ok in its current location, but its kinda a stretch to reach it. Not a problem on the HF850, just with the design of my truck

About 1.5 hours and it was done. Installing in my 2001 Audi A8L was a different story. Roughly 7 hours of time, much of which was spent disassembling the dash and re-assembling! There are kits available now that allow you to wire directly to your vehicle's stereo harness. GET ONE!

Now, apart from the installs: Using the unit to speak to someone on a land line is great. No problems, good sound, they hear you fine, etc. The problem develops if you are speaking to someone who is also on a bluetooth enabled device. Doesn't matter if it is a headset or a hands-free bluetooth car kit. There consistently is a feedback/echo loop that starts and cannot be stopped unless you quit speaking for a period of time. I'm not sure if it's the version of bluetooth that the unit operates on or what. I tried re-positioning speakers, mic's, changing volume settings, etc. Nothing seems to work. I now have to look to see who is calling before answering in the car. If it is a land line, no problem, life is good. If it is someone I know on their cell phone and they typically use a bluetooth device, I disconnect the link and answer on my handset.

I know that this is a long winded explanation, but I want people to know that there is a potential hiccup to this unit that I have yet to resolve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why did I wait?, December 12, 2006

I had a hands-free system for my last generation cell phone. When my company gave me a Blackberry the hands-free wasn't compatible so I abandoned using it. Finally I got tired of missing it and found this unit which is compatible with my Blackberry 7520.

I downloaded the users manual and decided the installation would not be hard for me. The unit came and I installed it. It was easy to do for me, having been inside the works of my Jeep dash many, many times.

The unit integrates with my stereo and mutes the sounds when calls are in progress. The microphone, speaker and power lines are quite long so unless you plan to install the controls in the back seat of a huge mini-van, the set will work fine.

Sound quality is great, the controls are easy to use, and I am once again driving with both hands on the wheel. What a liberation!

I purchased this item and had my local car radio shop install the unit for me. They placed the speaker beneath the dash in the passenger side and the mic close to the rear mirror. I was suprised at how well it worked the first time around. Pairing the unit to my Motorola RAZR was very simple. I didnt need to yell for the other party to hear me. It sounded very clear and no noticeable noise during use. This is a great addition to my Nissan Murano.

First the good news. I have had it installed on my car for about one and half years and it mostly works great. It has remained paired with my phones, and I have had few connection problems. Most calls are clear on both ends. Sometimes, road noise can be a problem though.

Now the bad. Voice dialing only works when I am in a parking lot. Otherwise road noise interfers and the system can't hear me. So basically it is not a hands free unit (for outgoing calls).

I had the unit professionally installed. The first unit was defective, and I had a very difficult time working with Motorola. Their support (in India) is terrible. In the end I returned the unit to the store (this was a lot of trouble as the store did not want an opened unit back, but you only find out that it is defective once it is opened). Also, how do you send a partially installed car kit back to Motorola for evaluation? The installer only found out that the unit was defective after he had completed the istallation. The second unit has worked fine.

In all, I have been happy with the unit and would recommend it with two caveats. First, don't expect a true hands free unit. Second, don't expect any customer service from Motorola.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily the best electronics "TOY" I've ever owned! A Godsend!, October 16, 2006
This review is from: Motorola HF850 Deluxe Bluetooth Car Kit [Motorola Retail Packaging] (Wireless Phone Accessory)
This is easily the best Bluetooth product available on the market! PERIOD! I thought it was going to be a fair product, but after trying this thing out, I was VERY impressed! Wow is all I can really say. I'm using the speaker that it came with and I can't believe how loud it gets. I was worried that I was going to be getting a cheap speaker with this product but...not the case at all! The calls you make are crystal clear and the people on the other end really think you're using your phone handset. Most people are shocked when I tell them that they are in fact on a speakerphone.

It's a truly amazing product! Kudos to Motorola for this awsome item! I can't imagine driving my car without it!

And for those people that complain about not being able to have a private call, well all you have to do it take 2 seconds and go into your phone and shut off bluetooth. Or if you want to use a bluetooth headset to make a private call, well then all you have to do is go into your phone and disable the car kit set. It's that simple.

I elected to not have the sound go thru my car speakers only for the fact that I'm lazy and don't want to mess with all of my amps. Actually it doesn't even take that much. You don't even have to have the unit automatically mute the sound on your sound system! It's awesome!

Amazing! I'm buying one for my other cars this week! I love it!!

Gd.

This is an excellent bluetooth product. What I like most is that it can be used with any phone with bluetooth capability. In my past car kits - each time I changed phones I needed a new car kit. The only feature I miss is a built in means for charging my cell phone. Nevertheless the total hands free feature with voice dialing is super!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bluetooth Car Kit is an excellent product for those who drives longtime to and from office!!!, May 12, 2007
This review is from: Motorola HF850 Deluxe Bluetooth Car Kit [Motorola Retail Packaging] (Wireless Phone Accessory)
My office is far from home and Was looking for a handsfree which can help me take long conference calls while going to and coming from office. This product from Motorola integrates well with my blackberry pearl with no problem. I got this fitted into my Honda car in New Delhi just paid 5 dollars and it is intelligent. If I am having a conversation on the phone while I get into the car and starts off the engine, within few seconds the handsfree system takes over automatically. Same way when I switch off my engine it waits for my conversation to finish before turning off the handsfree.. Pretty cool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great hands free car kit, January 30, 2007

We travel full time in our RV and had a similar car kit that was not bluetooth installed in our RV so we could both participate in the conversation. We upgraded to the Motorola V325i phones which are bluetooth, so ordered this car kit. The speaker is crystal clear and plenty loud enough for both of us to hear the conversation. Those we call say they cannot tell we are on a speaker phone. A minor inconvenience is that it does not charge the phone. I highly recommend this car kit.
