1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!, December 12, 2002

This review is from: Motorola Easy Install Hands Free Car Kit for Motorola V60, V120, Timeport Phones (Wireless Phone Accessory)
The microphone does not transmit understandable sound to callers, but Speaker provides excellent sound. Family members cannot recognize my voice and say words are not clear. Even when I place microphone close to mouth, results do not improve. I am aware that the microphone is not the speaker, but is located near the phone plug end.

After I disconnect the unit from the phone, (without disconnecting the call) my messages are easily understood using the phone microphone itself.

In my Toyota Avalon, there is actually no room for mounting, so it just flopped on the console. Too bad that with today's technology Motorola couldn't miniaturize and condense the size of this unit and eliminate the heavy coiled cord, and have everything fit in the cigarette lighter socket. The cords were a nuisence, interferrng with transmission shifts. The Motorola unit might work on a Hum V or a Mack truck, I suppose.

I tried to live with it, and searched for a remote microphone with the proper 3/32 male plug. I finally went to Radio Shack and found they could order one out for about $15.00, and it would take a few days. I finally opted to purchase a Radio Shack #1700917HFA for a Motorola V120 for $29.99. It features a remote mike and self contained unit that fits in the cigarette lighter with only one cord to the phone. I located the microphone above the driver's door, and the cord concealed under the rubber door seal, then under the dashboard, and it ends near the ash tray door. It plugs into the unit and works well. Sound quality is not as clear as the Motorola unit on my end, but those I phone hear clearly.

If you purchased a Motorola Hands Free Unit, and the bulk is not a problem, and if you can find a microphone with a tight fitting male plug that will fit in the unit, you will probably be satisfied. Take the unit to the place where you go shopping for the microphone to be sure the plug fits tightly into the phone jack. The Motorola unit? It is sitting on my workbench as a reminder of my gullibility.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't drive without it! A necessity today:, September 4, 2002
This review is from: Motorola Easy Install Hands Free Car Kit for Motorola V60, V120, Timeport Phones (Wireless Phone Accessory)
A prior reviewer, erroniously indicated that the MICROPHONE is in the 'speaker'. This is not correct. The MIC is that little rectangular box UNDER the connector that goes into the phone. I had an older handsfree MICROPHONE on my sun visor, and I used an adaptor plug to change from 1/8-inch to 2.5-mm plug required. I would ONLY recommend this item with the EXTERNAL MIC. It works GREATS. The speaker has a 3-watt amp that more often than not I have to turn down the volume. The unit also is relatively small in size and really not visable if you were to look into the car's windows from outside. For SAFETY, this is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, just don't forget that you are really DRIVING a car at the SAME TIME you are trying to carry on a conversation!

3.0 out of 5 stars You want full duplex? Buy something else., February 4, 2003

This review is from: Motorola Easy Install Hands Free Car Kit for Motorola V60, V120, Timeport Phones (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Ok, when I got this, I just assumed it was full duplex. I dont' care what any body or any specs say. I turned on the car radio, connect my cell to the kit, called my cell with my home cordless phone, and talked into it. The radio music noticeably disappears when I speak.

This is not a real hassle if you're sitting there in your car still and talking to friends. But if you're driving, your friends will not hear the "driving hissing sound" when they're talking to you. They feel like they're talking to nobody, then they either complain or ask. I have a 528, and it's quiet inside - but at 75 MPH, there's bound to be some whitenoise when you're talking.

I bought the external mic too. It is WAAAY too overpowered. I finally cut the mic, and attached a PC mic. Worked a lot better, and then realized this kit wasn't full duplex. Why is it so hard to make it full duplex? What is wrong with motorola?
