Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Motorola reinvents its popular MOTOROKR lineup with the technologically advanced ROKR E8 cell phone/digital audio player. It features a morphing keypad that only shows the relevant keys in various modes, a wide variety of music file format compatibility, and wireless Bluetooth stereo music streaming. And it includes new Motorola design innovations, including ModeShift technology for moving from phone to music mode with the touch of a single button and the FastScroll navigation wheel for quickly accessing both your music and contact libraries. This phone also features an internal 2 GB memory, MicroSD memory expansion for up to 4 GB of additional memory, 2.0-megapixel camera/camcorder, and an airplane mode that allows you to play uninterrupted music while flying or when you don't want to be interrupted by incoming calls.

From talk to music in one touch, ROKR E8 features cutting-edge, easy-to-use controls that allow a smooth transition from phone to MP3 player.
This unlocked cell phone can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides quad-band connectivity (850/900/1800/1900 MHz). It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider.

The ROKR E8 provides you the freedom to access music from a wide variety of sources, whether it's music you've purchased from online stores or from subscription services. It's compatible with Windows Media Player 11, and it access to more than 200 online music stores and simple drag-and-drop organizing of songs, artists, albums and playlists. The phone also includes a built-in FM radio (optional 3.5mm headphones must be plugged in) and a Song ID feature that recognizes and displays tune information (not available in all areas; additional charges may apply).

In music mode, the ROKR E8 delivers great sound through a three-dimensional stereo feature that enhances two-channel audio and an on-board equalizer. Share music with friends over the built-in speaker, use a favorite set of standard stereo wired headphones using the 3.5 mm headset jack. This phone also provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity with the A2DP Bluetooth profile, enabling you to stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones or speaker dock.

Compatible with a wide variety of file formats, the ROKR E8 can also sync up with Windows Media Player 11 on your PC.
A perfect blend of art and science, the face of the E8 is a sleek, seamless panel that features the first haptic touchpad from Motorola, which provides vibrating, tactile feedback. Using breakthrough ModeShift technology from Motorola, the E8 presents you with only the controls you need, at the time you need them--instantly transforming from music player to phone to imaging device with the touch of a button. When powered off, the surface of ROKR E8 shows no visible keys. Power on the device and it presents a virtual numbered keypad on the front surface. Press the virtual music key, and the phone keypad disappears and and is replaced by control keys for the music player (play, pause, fast forward and rewind). Using innovative vibrating haptics technology, the device provides the tactile feedback you expect from a traditional keypad, providing confirmation they have pressed a virtual key.

The ROKR E8 also marks the debut of Motorola's new FastScroll navigation wheel, a variable-speed touch control that lets you easily scroll through all of the content stored on the device. With a gentle slide of the thumb, the wheel quickly scrolls through your music (music mode), contacts (phone mode), calendar (phone mode), or multimedia (imaging mode) content.

The ROKR E8 follows the RAZR2 in offering Motorola's CrystalTalk technology, an innovative feature that automatically accounts for background noise during a call and adjusts the audio quality based on ambient noise conditions to provide the optimal conversational experience. CrystalTalk also reduces the volume of the background noise picked up by the microphone during a call, making it possible to be more easily heard over the phone while in a noisy environment.

The 2-megapixel camera includes an 8x digital zoom and it provides four resolution choices (from 320 x 240 to 1600 x 1200 pixels). It also features a multi-shot mode, self-timer, free memory space indicator, color effects, and multiple shutter sounds (including silent). The phone also includes an impressive video camcorder, providing up to QCIF resolution (176 x 144 pixels) at 15 fps (frames per second. You can record video for as long as you have available space on your MicroSD memory card.

Other features include:

  • 2.0-inch QVGA display with 240 x 320-pixel resolution and 262K colors
  • Supported music formats: MIDI, MP3, AAC, AAC+, Enhanced AAC+, WMA, WAV, AMR-NB, Real Audio (RA) v10, Microsoft music ecosystem
  • Quad-band GSM network connectivity (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
  • GPRS/EDGE Class 12 (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) network compatibility
  • Talking phone offers a voice readout of text messages while dialing number or when receiving a call

Product Description

Motorola continues to make up for its dismal Rokr E1 with its new Rokr E8. Announced at the ultra-posh Wynn Hotel during a late-night press conference (we re not sure why Moto had to wait until 9 p.m. on a Sunday to do this), the ROKR E8 is one of two handsets Moto is announcing at CES 2008. And it won CNET s Best of CES in the cell phones and smartphones. Music, of course, is a central theme here but the ROKR E8 s real news lies with its unique "ModeShift" technology. Instead of traditional keypad and navigation array, the Rokr features a smooth "glasslike" surface with touch-pad controls that digitally "morph" depending on how the handset is used. As you shift from phone to music to imaging modes, the backlight on the control changes to illuminate only the relevant buttons for your current function. The E8 also features Motorola s first Haptics keypad with vibrating feedback and a "FastScroll" navigation wheel that makes it pretty seamless to navigate through long playlists. It s not a complete circle but it s pretty user-friendly. Loading songs on the E8 is also supposed to be fast and easy via a USB connection to a PC. Moto said that over the next year it would introduce more music phones like the E8 that would be better than standalone music players. That s a bold prediction, we can t wait to test it out. We have to say, however, that Moto seems to have succeeded at integrating the ergonomics of an MP3 player and a cell phone into one device. Other features on the candy bar device include a Linux/Java OS, support for Windows Media Player 11, a large (2-inch) 262,000-color display, 2GB internal memory, stereo Bluetooth, USB 2.0, Moto s CrystalTalk technology (like we saw on the Razr2 series), an external memory card slot, a 2-megapixel camera, a digital-music player, and a full HTML browser. The quad-band world phone supports GPRS and EDGE networks, and it offers a "talking phone" to read your text messages while dialing a number or receiving a call. We haven t

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost five stars, but not quite, May 27, 2009
This review is from: Motorola MOTOROKER E8 Unlocked Phone with 2 GB Memory, MicroSD Slot, 2 MP Camera, and Media Player--International Version with No Warranty (Black) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
This phone is an amazing piece of electronics and would get a five-star rating if it didn't have a few quirks.

Pros
*can support additional memory up to (and maybe beyond) a 16GB micro sd card
*with additional memory, this can make a great substitute for an mp3 player
*takes ok pictures for a cell phone
*can listen to music without headphones
*takes a standard mini headphone jack so you can use your regular noise-canceling headphones
*quad-band so it can be used literally anywhere in the world just by inserting a local SIM card
*good battery life
*excellent sound clarity, even on speaker phone

Cons (the first two are the biggest in my opinion)
*makes a slight chirping noise when the 'buttons' are pressed
*hard to get rid of the notification 'ding' after every call or text
*lack of a cover makes it easy to butt-dial if you forget to flip the switch to turn off the keys
*accessories are hard to find (custom cases, etc)
*not 3G capable (not an issue for me but might be for you)
*can be slow to load playlists if you have a lot of music on the phone

3.0 out of 5 stars Too slow!, September 28, 2009

This review is from: Motorola MOTOROKER E8 Unlocked Phone with 2 GB Memory, MicroSD Slot, 2 MP Camera, and Media Player--International Version with No Warranty (Black) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
This cell phone looks great. The display is very bright and colorful. The 2Gb of memory is good enough if you enjoy music and the 2mega pixel camera is ok. I would give 5 stars to this phone if wasn't because of one major problem: It's incredible slow. It takes so much time to execute many single tasks like searching your phone list for example. Even navigate the menu can be painful cause sometimes it takes a while to change from one option to another (I usually click lots of time and it suddenly goes beyond the point I wanted.) Seriously, if you don't have patience don't buy this phone. I have, many times, wanted to just throw this phone at the wall. Anyway, like I said, if you don't mind, it's a good phone.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great phone and music player, May 22, 2009
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Motorola MOTOROKER E8 Unlocked Phone with 2 GB Memory, MicroSD Slot, 2 MP Camera, and Media Player--International Version with No Warranty (Black) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Pros:
- Excellent build quality, much better than Nokia's and Sony Ericsson's plastic toys.
- Really good voice transmission, I'm able to talk in noisy environments, and the phone filters the interference.
- Excellent MP3 quality, much better than previosuly used Nokia 5310 and Sony Ericsson W890.
- Standard slots and connections: MicroSD card, micro USB connection, 3.5 headphone jack.

Cons:
- The menus are not great when comparing to both Nokia and SE. They're not as intuitive as the others. However, they're not slow, and I've not run into any bug yet.
- The camera is mediocre, but this isn't a cameraphone. If you need that, you should buy a Moto ZN5.

Overall, I think it's a great purchase for someone who looks for a phone with a great call quality and an excellent music player.
