Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
The Motorola MotoZine ZN5 combines world-class innovation from two industry leaders, Motorola and Kodak. The MotoZine is the first phone to incoporate Motorola ModeShift and Kodak imaging technologies, resulting in an easy and immersive mobile imaging experience that will help you seize inspiration and share images from wherever you roam to friends and family around the globe. Putting image capture first and foremost, the MotoZine features a 5-megapixel auto-focus imager, high-resolution landscape screen, a Xenon flash, and one of the fastest click-to-click times available. Photos can also be uploaded via a Kodak Gallery Link and instantly shared to an online Kodak Gallery in one simple click.

The MotoZine mobile phone becomes a full featured camera with ultra-fast 5 megapixel auto focus lens, low-light optimization, and a bright Xenon flash.
This phone is compatible with T-Mobile's MyFaves service for unlimited nationwide calling to your five favorite people, and its quad-band GSM/EDGE cellular connectivity makes it a great companion for global roaming. It also offers integrated Wi-Fi networking (802.11b/g) for fast and easy uploading of photos on your home network or while on the go at hotspots. You'll also enjoy all your favorite music thanks to the multi-format digital audio player and stereo Bluetooth connectivity, as well as an integrated FM radio. Other features include Bluetooth for handsfree devices and pairing with Kodak Bluetooth-enabled devices (such as printers), 350 MB of internal memory, MicroSD memory expansion (up to 4 GB), access to email, and up to 5 hours of talk time.

T-Mobile Service
The Zine operates on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz networks and can handle high-speed data connectivity via T-Mobile's EDGE network (which stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution"). This high-speed, mobile data and Internet access technology is fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services (with average data speeds between 75-135Kbps), including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go.

It's compatible with T-Mobile's myFaves service, which allows you to call up to five of your most common contacts--on any network, even landlines--without using any of your minutes. Learn more about myFaves from T-Mobile.

Download cool new games, HiFi Ringers (real songs by today's hottest artists), MegaTones (instrumental versions of songs), and wallpapers quickly, as well as stay connected via the Web, instant messaging, and email.

Phone Features
Using breakthrough ModeShift technology from Motorola, the Motorola Zine ZN5 presents you with only the controls you need, at the time you need them--instantly transforming from phone to imaging device and back with the touch of a button. Simply slide the lens cover open to illuminate ModeShift Technology, transforming the full-featured mobile phone into an ultra-fast 5-megapixel camera, complete with auto-focus, low-light optimization, and a bright Xenon flash. When you're done, just slide across the lens cover and ModeShift instantly transforms your camera back to a phone.

The MotoZine is the only mobile phone to have Kodak Imaging Technology that can be instantly combined with Kodak Perfect Touch Technology for brighter, more vivid pictures on the spot which look noticeably better than pictures created without the technology. Auto-focus locks in less than one second and there are no delays when taking one photo to the next. With one touch, you can view all your photos right from the home screen--no menus, no searching. You can take advantage of multiple capture modes, including panorama, which automatically stitches together continuous shots taken on the horizon line into a single, extended image.

Built to shoot and share, the MotoZine offers a plethora of ways to connect your phone to printers, your PC, the Web, and even your TV:

  • Send your photos while on the go via MMS, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth wireless technology.
  • Photos can be uploaded via Kodak Gallery Link and instantly shared to the Kodak Gallery online in one simple click. You can also send images to your favorite photo site via ShoZu.
  • Use Kodak EasyShare Software to quickly transfer pictures from your phone to your PC via USB. With Kodak EasyShare Software you can organize, edit, print, and share your photos.
  • Display instant slideshows on your TV with just one cable, or print directly to your Kodak All-in-One inkjet printers using Bluetooth.

This Motorola phone includes the innovative CrystalTalk technology, which automatically accounts for background noise during a call and adjusts the audio quality based on ambient noise conditions to provide the optimal conversational experience. CrystalTalk also reduces the volume of the background noise picked up by the microphone during a call, making it possible to be more easily heard over the phone while in a noisy environment.

Handsfree communication is easy thanks to the Bluetooth wireless connectivity (version 2.0), which includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and printing to Bluetooth-enabled printers. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. You can connect your laptop (either via Bluetooth or wired USB) and enjoy dial-up networking--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server.

Other features include:

  • 2.4-inch display with 240 x 320-pixel resolution and 262K color depth
  • Capture and edit modes: panorama, grayscale, sepia, negative, reddish, greenish, blueish
  • Focal length: 5.86mm. Aperture: 2.8/5.6
  • Video capture with length determined by amount of available memory; up to 15 fps (frames per second) in MPEG4 and H.263
  • Up to 350 MB user-accessible internal memory with expansion via optional MicroSD memory cards up to 4 GB in size
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, IM, personal email (POP3, IMAP)
  • Digital audio player compatible with MP3, WMA, and AAC
  • Full HTML open source browser
  • Organizer tools: Calendar, alarm, to-do, voice memo, calculator

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad hardware specs!, December 26, 2008
I will start this review off by saying the the MotoZINE is really kind of a cool phone. It has a certain "wow" factor. The 5 megapixel camera is great, it's actually a better camera then most 5 mp standalone digital cameras. It's a beautiful phone too, and has quite a few cool features.

However, there are some issues, or rather, one main issue:

The processor of the phone is not very good at all. It can't handle multiple button presses or multiple tasks happening. When just a few things happen, it commonly results in the phone resetting (which is what you should hope for) or the phone just getting stuck on the home screen(which is what you don't want), sometimes for 15-20 minutes until you finally decide to take the battery out and restart the phone.

Often, if the phone gets stuck on the home screen and rights itself, you can't call anyone for a very long time. Everytime you try to call someone, you get an error message that says "Tapi server is disconnected".

One story I would like to present: My car battery was dead one day(i had stupidly left my lights on), and i was trying to get ahold of my girlfriend because she lived very close and I was going to see if her parents would come and give my car a jump.

It was below freezing outside, with 30 mph winds, so you can definitely assume it was freezing cold.

As i tried to call her, and text her, the issues got ridiculous. I was barely even able to talk to her for 1 minute or so before the phone resetting, and consequently, dropping the call. In texting, it took me 45 minutes to get my message across to her.

In my opionion, I do not recommend the MotoZINE.

If you were to get any phone, i'd recommend the motoROKR

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb hardware, responsive software, great price, clunky configuration, December 3, 2008
I have had this phone for about a week, and have been able to put it through its paces.

Pros: The call voice quality and the picture quality are excellent. The MP3 player is also very good, and pauses when you receive a call. It can hold a 4Gig memory card, which will capture lots of full resolutions photos. The phone has bluetooth and wifi connectivity, and you can browse the web using a wifi connection. The handset itself is very ergonomic, and the test that I found on it shows it to have impressive durability.
(see [...])
The computer switches "modes" quickly, so that if you take the phone out of your pocket and flip open the lens cover, it behaves just like a regular digital camera and you can take a photo right away. Then, when you close the lens cover, it goes back to behaving like a phone.

Cons: The adjusting some of the settings takes a while to figure out, and it took me a while to figure out how to get the browser to use wifi, etc. The video recording mode is essentially useless. I have also found some problems with taking close up photos in low light, since the flash is too bright.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great phone, great camera, December 1, 2008
I've owned this phone for several weeks, and am highly impressed. The call quality is excellent, and the picture quality is impressive. The other day a buddy was looking at the pics, and his comment was simply, "these are real pictures." That's pretty much the whole reason to own the phone right there. A couple of complaints. First, texting is a pain. Perhaps it's my Paul Bunyan-like fingers, but my initial texts were little better than half sentences before they were inadvertently sent. Not a big deal for me since I don't text much, but something to keep in mind. Second, the software has proven to be a bit buggy. I've had a few instances where, after turning the phone on, I couldn't access my music because the phone wasn't able to refresh the media list (thus the 4 stars). I've contacted customer support, but to no avail. I assume there will be some sort of firmware update soon, or hope there will be anyway. It's only happened twice, so again, not a big deal. I purchased this phone primarily for the camera, and have not been disappointed. I do hope I don't sprout an extra ear due to the high radiation, as mentioned in a previous review.
