Comcast is working with Motorola to come out with self install kits so you cannot use your own EMTA unit until that process is completed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, Comcast compatible, October 7, 2011
This review is from: Motorola SURFboard SBV5220 Digital Voice Modem with Integrated Battery Backup (Electronics)
Bought this eMTA modem (for use with digital internet and phone) after Comcast told me I would be charge a $7/month rental fee automatically for using theirs. They said that this modem was not sold anywhere, but that if I found one that was compatible, it would work and the fee would be waved. When the installation technician (a contractor who is not an employee of Comcast) came to set up my phone and cable, they hassled him about the modem, but he was on my side and made it work.

According to Comcast's website, there are only SOME geographic areas where they allow you to use your own eMTA modem, but they do not say what those areas are (I am in the Northwest - Seattle area). I suspect that if you have an installation technician who does not work for Comcast, you will have no problem getting this thing to work for you.

Another note - the thing looks and feels big and bulky, so if something "sleek" is what you are looking for, this is not the modem for you. Integrated battery back up is great - if the power goes out, you will still have phone service.

1.0 out of 5 stars Comcast Trap, September 14, 2011

As a few previous reviews state, this equipment can no longer be activated by Comcast services. (September 14, 2011) Save your money if you are attempting to connect new Comcast services with this modem. Also, Comcast requires user-owned modems to be purchased from Best Buy. Enjoy the retail prices at Best Buy and Comcast, bundled together for your convenience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Free from Cox, December 2, 2007

I've had this modem for about a month now. It's just as good as the other Motorola modem (SB5101) I bought earlier this year from Walmart which was less than $60. The biggest difference is this one is almost twice the size as the SB5101 because of its battery backup and its a lot heavier too. Anyway I moved and got a package deal from Cox that included tv, internet and phone service so they threw in this modem as part of the deal. Of course I don't get to keep if I end my service but who cares? Great product and a great deal from Cox.

The Motorola Surfboard SBV5220 Digital Voice Modem with Intergrated Battery backup, is swift, smooth, and reliable; just be sure you have a battery back-up for unforeseeable natural disaster like," power-outage ".

4.0 out of 5 stars Motorola SURFboard--- the modem I always wanted, September 24, 2009

This is the modem I have always wanted. The seller was prompt and the price was good to excellent for a used modem. The only problem is Phoenix COX cable is not in the 21st century yet for cable service. I have a wonderful paperweight for now. COX assured me that Phoenix some day will join the rest of the "COX family" across the country and actually be able to support this 2.0 modem and suggested that I hang on to it. I should have done my research better. I thought COX cable was the same company nationwide... I was told it is... but it isn't. There were no posts, blogs, or comments anywhere mentioning that this modem would not work in Arizona because we are lagging behind the rest of the entire world with only 1.1 DOCSIS service. Brag-sites posted by both COX and COMCAST mention that 3.0 is the newest technology and "they've got it". If they can't service 2.0 DOCSIS modems now, then I don't hold much hope for them ever being able to service 3.0.

I feel like a solid-state pc with USB flash drives in a Dual-Platter 5-1/4 FLOPPY DRIVE world. This is a great modem --- but do your homework before you press the "purchase" button.

After buying this modem, I felt stupid for paying comcast all these years when I could have bought this one and saved myself a ton of money. Oddly enough it was the friendly comcast rep who suggested that I buy this instead of paying for a rental.
