4.0 out of 5 stars Run's too hot
This modem does what it was created to do. Unfortunately, Motorola did not put enough air vents into the top of the unit, so it always stays extremely warm to the touch. Following another posters' recommendation, I simply turned the unit upside down on my desk. The top, which lays on the desk, stays cool, and the open vents on the bottom of the unit are now facing...

1.0 out of 5 stars Shame on Motorola
I am on my 3rd Motorola modem in less than 2.5 years. I can only use this one with AT&T DSL line. Each one of them broke right after 1 year warranty expired, and they are not cheap. As dependent as I am on Internet connection, I am seriously thinking about switching to another provider, since I can't afford paying for a replacement at any cost when another modem dies...

I am on my 3rd Motorola modem in less than 2.5 years. I can only use this one with AT&T DSL line. Each one of them broke right after 1 year warranty expired, and they are not cheap. As dependent as I am on Internet connection, I am seriously thinking about switching to another provider, since I can't afford paying for a replacement at any cost when another modem dies instantly without warning signs. Last time I had to pay $80 in store which is outrageous. I had cable modems before and they all became obsolete while still in good physical health, lasting me for 3-4 years each.

1.0 out of 5 stars Totally agree, October 27, 2009
This review is from: Motorola Southeast Region DSL Modem (Personal Computers)
I have to agree with all of the 1 star reviews here. We're just over the 1 year mark and it won't stay connected to the internet. Been on the phone with ATT help desk three times now. We can get it working, but it never lasts longer than a day. As of now, it won't stay connected for longer than a minute.

1.0 out of 5 stars Got it from ATT & T, September 30, 2009
This review is from: Motorola Southeast Region DSL Modem (Personal Computers)
I have had this modem for 1 yr and 5 days. It has been going up and down for a month. It finally was flashing a red in the power window and would not work.I called AT & T and they would send another one-No choice-for another $40 plus $20 shipping. 5 days over the one year warranty. Grrrrr.

AT&T'S Default MODEM for subscriber and its hotter than hot , literally to hot to hold this thing.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS , I taped mine to my air purifier which runs 24hours non stop as that's the only way to keep the unit kool.

If you have an air purifier and have this modem as your only choice get some clear electrical tape and tape it to the exhaust area of your air cleaner and run your cleaner non-stop , THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP IT KOOL. (Don't use your IONizer though if you have it turn it off , most purifiers can turn the ionizer off seperately)

I've read forums where people remove all of the plastic around it or drill more holes in the plastic for more ventilation , I've even seen someone rig a fan set up to the unit like a laptop type fan.

Really though ....first.. get another modem BUT if you stuck with this one find a way to keep air on it 24/7 otherwise it will overheat in months, days, weeks? who knows BUT IT WILL DIE due to the unit running EXTREMELY hot and I don't mean warm I mean REALLY REALLY "ouch" HOT.

I guess AT/T makes money left and right because these drop like flies , at/t even tried to charge me for the "FREE" modem I got with my contract after contacting them they credited me the over billing.

Regardless of the level of cust serv from at/t , the MODEM is HORRIBLE AVOID AT ALL COSTS unless you have a house you want to burn down for insurance purposes then by all means let this sucker run till it melts the face off your neighbors pet.

THIS ITEM HASN'T BEEN RECALLED YET? WHY??

1.0 out of 5 stars A terrible modem and fire hazard to boot!, September 23, 2009

As previously stated, these modems are overpriced hunks of junk that self-destruct within a month of their warranty running out. They're also the *ONLY* modem that AT&T will provide, and the last time mine broke they charged me $60 plus $100 more for an in-home visit because their techs weren't competent enough to diagnose what was wrong over the phone. We're now on our third modem and have to routinely leave it unplugged and/or spray it with an upside down can of compressed air to cool the thing down when it locks up (which is usually 2-3 times per day). The cheap plastic case has no ventilation, and even after breaking it apart and attacking it with a power drill, it's only moderately less prone to locking up. I'm seriously worried about this thing catching fire one night and burning my entire apartment down.

If you get stuck with one of these, turn it in to AT&T a few months before the warranty is up and get yourself a new one, regardless of how it's functioning. It's the only way to be sure two months later you won't get stuck having to buy a new one, plus whatever additional charges they can think up.

1.0 out of 5 stars Overheats... dead in a little over 1 year, September 22, 2009

I've had this modem for about 1 year and 3 months and all of a sudden it has just decided to die. Like the other reviewers mention this thing runs extremely hot and clearly can't be good for the circuitry inside.

I would not recommend you buy this modem.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yes it runs hot and does not last long, October 18, 2009
This review is from: Motorola Southeast Region DSL Modem (Personal Computers)
I've had two of these in the last two years. An AT&T tech told me modems last about three years. Searching for reviews on the internet revealed modem lives of six to nine years. Both of mine were provided by AT&T as was the present Seimens modem I just installed. I'm looking for a modem to keep as a spare. It will not be a Motorola.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality, dies after warranty expires, September 6, 2009
This review is from: Motorola Southeast Region DSL Modem (Personal Computers)
This modem does what it is supposed to do... for awhile. However, it died just past the warranty date. It is very hot to the touch, indicating an overheating problem. AT&T will gladly sell me another one. I'm sure they'll gladly sell me one each year as each one runs out of warranty.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Motorola Southeast Region DSL Modem (Personal Computers)
This modem does what it was created to do. Unfortunately, Motorola did not put enough air vents into the top of the unit, so it always stays extremely warm to the touch. Following another posters' recommendation, I simply turned the unit upside down on my desk. The top, which lays on the desk, stays cool, and the open vents on the bottom of the unit are now facing upwards, so all the heat is expelled. A simple solution for the problem, and one that Motorola should have put in place on its own. And yes, I would buy again because ATT/BellSouth DSL doesn't seem to work as well with the other modem's I've purchased. So I'll stick with this one for now.
