I bought this phone for my daughter to use during a two week school trip to France. Together with a SIM card purchased from Roam Simple, this was all she needed to receive and make calls while in France. It cost less than renting a phone, and now we own the phone for the next time a family member goes to Europe. The sound quality was as good as if she had been standing in the next room. No problems with signal strength. The phone has no camera so it won't send or receive pix messages, but all in all it was a great solution for us.

A rugged, easy to use phone. No complicated extra buttons that will accidentally activate camera etc. Exterior rubberized texture makes the phone easier to hold and it will not easily slip from your hand. Large and legible display. "Unlocked" makes it relatively easy to transfer SIM card from another phone.

First one failed after one day. Amazon was great as usual and shipped me a new one with 1 day shipping and paid the return on the failed one. 2nd one works fine

My husband dropped and broke his current phone. When I went to the cell phone company, they told me if I bought a phone from them, I would have to upgrade my plan. They were also kind enough to send me here to purchase an unlocked phone that would work with my existing plan. They phone is great and meets all of our needs. I would recommend it to anyone.

The battery was dead from from the beginning, phone shuts down intermittently. On the flip side, signal reception is very good - for the few minutes that the phone actually works

Great little Motorola V195 unlocked Phone. have no hidden cost. I Love it... Will order another unlocked phone, from amazon.com at great low prices. Don't have to pay 2 year contract with cell service. Make sure to order the right type of phone for your service...

I bought this phone as my 'world phone' since it was a quad band. The battery life is abysmal. I may take it overseas with the hope I don't have to keep charging it. Audio quality is good. Bottom line-it only goes on trips overseas as intended-not for home use.

This phone worked exactly as it was stated to work. Amazon.com delivered it when they said they would and it was easy. The phone made and received calls that were crystal clear even in some remote locations.

I ordered V195, being out of stock , I accepted to be supplied by V197.

When you are looking to buy a 4 band phone that means you travel a lot.
So you cannot connect wifi or internet or else as you have to open a account each time you are in a new country. So what you need is the 4 band phone, with srong case , easy access to sim card to change it (roaming is too much expensive anyway), better would be to have capabilty to have room for several sim cards releiving from the need to open the phone all the time. Large letters, large and easy to read keys, large memory for addresses and scheduling. And an exellent battery with a charger which can be plugged everywhere. No camera, no video, no "iTAP something" as in foreign countries you may need to write with several local languages. But with several alphabets.
Here is a free specification of a REAL cheap traveller mobile phone. V197 is a good product but engineer piled up into to many programs which are useless abroad, and the center row of the keys is difficult to read in outside daylight.

It's reliable, has bluetooth and speakerphone, and is relatively compact with good battery life. No camera, no additional memory, no radio. It worked fine in Europe, USA and Canada for me--but tough to text message with it. The v-195 has good sound quality, but is a bit of a clunker compared to my older, more compact Samsung E-105.

But the E-105 has no bluetooth nor speakerphone and had less battery life (I did buy a larger aftermarket battery-$10-for the E-105 which substantially lengthened life and carried the very thin, small original battery as a spare).

I now have a Motorola Razr v3, but I cannot shortcut to the calendar as I could with the V-195. The E-105 showed time AND date on the front and could be set up with the calendar on the inside screen always accessible with NO keypressing needed.

In short, neither of my Motorola phones is that much better in most respects than my old Samsung E-105 except for Bluetooth-and have other drawbacks. The camera on the Razr v3 is largely a joke, but the form factor is nice and the screen is bigger (but, so what?).

I don't see any difference between the V-197 and the V-195 except maybe case color????
