Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

This Bluetooth-enabled phone with a sleek, steel-accented case sports the latest technology--video playback, multiplayer gaming, multimedia messaging and a VGA camera with digital zoom. What's more, it's a quad-band phone with support for global coverage.

Design
The phone features a sleek clamshell design with a large 176 x 220 color display with 65,000 colors. The outside cover of the handset sports a supplementary 96 x 32 blue monochrome display that can display time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The VGA camera lens and self-portrait mirror is housed above this display. A stub antenna is placed on the top right side of the unit, next to the phone's headset jack. Volume buttons are placed on the left side, while a one-touch camera button is on the right. Most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. A combined charging and data cable port is placed on the bottom of the phone.

Calling Features
The V500 allows you to assign pictures to your most common callers. It also supports polyphonic ringtones as well as MP3 ringers, allowing you to use portions of your favorite songs to alert you to incoming calls. A number of ringtones come preloaded on the phone, and there's even an included application, MotoMixer, that lets you mix your own ringtones.

Speed dialing, which allows you to call pre-programmed numbers with one button is built in, as is a vibrating alert. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The V500 features support for ICQ, AOL and Yahoo! instant messaging applications (carrier messaging charges may apply). There's also a built-in web browser for wireless downloads and mobile web browsing. Traditional text messaging, as well as picture and sound messaging (MMS) are also supported by the phone. When used in combination with the phone's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. iTap text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the V220 including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, a calendar, a notepad and an alarm clock. Use the V500's Bluetooth capability to set up a wireless link with a Bluetooth headset accessory or connect to a computer or hand-held device to exchange and synchronize data.

Imaging and Entertainment
The V500's Bluetooth connectivity can also be used to transfer pictures, sounds and graphics to the phone's memory from your PC. Screensavers, themes and wallpapers can be set to your tastes. The V500 is Java enabled, meaning it supports games and application downloads written on the Java platform. The phone ships with a single game, Bejeweled. The phone also supports MPEG4 video playback. Load video clips from your PC or download them from a wireless web provider and enjoy video on the go.

Vital Statistics
The V500 weighs 4.3 ounces and measures 3.5 x 1.9 x .9 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 6.5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 200 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice unlocked phone, November 21, 2005
By
T Lindsay (Minneapolis, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Motorola V500 Unlocked Cell Phone with Bluetooth--International Version with No Warranty (Silver) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
As we spend a fair amount of time in Europe and are currently T-Mobile customers here in the US and Orange customers in France, I got this phone for my wife. I have a V600 with the T-Mobile software load, and her V500 with the generic Motorola load is drastically superior. It's relatively quick and quite easy to reconfigure her phone for WAP access in France, and the technical quality of the phone has been great - it sounds good, it gets a good GPRS data rate, it works fine as an analog modem when GPRS isn't available, and its camera is okay.

It doesn't get five stars because of some minor annoyances.
The phone's memory, at 5MB, is painfully tiny for anything other than the occasional snapshot and phone number storage. Of course, the bluetooth interface is too slow to support file transfers larger than about 100KB - when a friend with a more featureful phone accidentally sent me a 2MB image over bluetooth, it took about 5 minutes to transfer and couldn't display the picture anyway. The phone has a surprisingly good (and intuitive) mp3 player, but since one track fills all the memory, it's a wasted feature unless you want annoying mp3 ringtones. Finally, the phone is very light, which is nice, but also means that it's all plastic and hence scratches fairly easily. So it has to be protected.

Still, despite these annoyances it's a great phone - it works everywhere in the world, picks up signals even when they're weak, has the capability of bluetooth file transfers and headsets, and gets reasonably long battery life (3 or 4 days if you use it occasionally, 2 days if you use it a bit, 7 days if it's on but unused). Just make sure you get the straight Motorola software load, as the providers cripple all the interesting configuration, signal selection, and utility menus.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great, January 25, 2006
This review is from: Motorola V500 Unlocked Cell Phone with Bluetooth--International Version with No Warranty (Silver) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Decent phone, especially for voice-heavy usage. Menu is fairly easy to navigate. Can customize the look. I like that you can assosiate a photo with a phone number, so when a friend or spouse calls, you see their face (or whatever you want to use for them).

The camera is fair, but all cameras are fair when this model came out. Don't expect this to be a substitute for a digital camera. It's good for taking a photo in a pinch, but it's lo-res and has no flash. Memory is very sparse, too, and no expansion slots.

Would prefer bluetooth, which is why I went with a V600 when my contract was up.

Batteries are compatible. SIM cards are compatible.
