Design
The i830 is no ordinary clamshell. Like other Nextel phones, it's built tough for construction and utilities industry users. The outer casing features a durable anodized metal covering that kicks the style up a few notches. The phone sports a large 130 x 130 TFT color display with 65,000 colors. Meanwhile, the outside cover features a supplementary monochrome display that can display time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. An attached cover protects the unit's USB data, handsfree headset, and charging ports. The phone's control pad also features a five-way button that can control most of the phone's functions. The phone's software features one-touch shortcuts to phone features and easy, icon-driven menus.

Calling Features
The i830's built-in address book can store up to 600 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert and you can assign unique ring tones to contacts for audible notification and caller identification during incoming calls. More polyphonic ringtones can be added via a Nextel Online add-on plan. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. You can also speak numbers and control other phone features with the sound of your voice. Access the last 20 sent and received calls for quick call return or number storage via the recent calls list. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear, and the i830's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.

One of the key features of any Nextel phone is support for Nextel's Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology. The i830 fully supports the service, which allows for one-touch conversations with anyone else on a Nextel phone. It's like a having a CB radio with enough range to cover all of North America. The i830 also features a walkie-talkie private speaker button. This switches from the external speaker to the earpiece for private conversations or to minimize disruptions in quiet environments.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The i830 features MMS-based support for mobile-to-mobile or mobile-to-email text, graphics and sound messaging. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the i830, as well. Nextel's optional Nextel Online package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Nextel Online also features games, ringtones, realtime news and sports updates, virtual address books, and more-- all delivered to your Nextel phone.

The i830 ships with a datebook that lets you book meetings, plan events, and set alarms that will automatically turn on the phone if needed. You can store a phone number or Direct Connect ID and initiate a call from a datebook entry (datebook Does not sync with other software programs). There's also a voice recording application that can record phone conversations if you need to replay directions or meeting times. A time and date clock are included, as well.

Entertainment and Software
For those who want their i830 to match their tastes, the phone allows you to customize the idle screen with your choice of hundreds of available images. You can also download new wallpapers directly to your phone with any Nextel Online plan.

The i830 is packed with a number of Java applications. Pre-loaded applications include Advanced Calculator, as well as TeleNav 2.2, an application that provides audible driving directions and takes advantage of the i830's GPS capability. 1KTV multimedia for wireless news reports is also included (both TeleNav and 1KTV require subscriptions). 5.0 out of 5 stars Best Nextel Phone To Date, June 12, 2004

TYR (Dallas, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Motorola i830 Phone - Silver (Nextel) (Wireless Phone)
Have had the phone for over a week now. Great call quality, great reception (Dallas area), address book is second to none, LOUD ring tone, great portability. I've always stayed away from Nextel due to the bulky size of their phones. No more.

My last phone was a Motorola V60 from Verizon. The phone is similar in size to the V60, although slightly slimmer. The only negative comment about the phone is that the battery life is very short. If you are a power user, you should always have a charger nearby or at least have a second battery around. For most users, the battery should last a couple days though. With my V60 I was only charging the battery about twice a week. With this Nextel I need to charge it every 1-2 days. The only thing missing on the phone that I wish it had is Bluetooth. Other than that, the phone is perfect for me.

I switched from Verizon after being happy with Verizon for the past 3 years because I recently moved to Texas and I found the Verizon phone was going into the Extended Area Network at and around my work place. Reception was also spotty in the work area although everyplace else was great. I was able to get the phone at a heavily discounted price from a Nextel store (cheaper than what Amazon was selling it for even after rebate and NO I do not have ANY affiliation with Nextel other than being a customer). Also got 1000 anytime minutes for $55, unlimited long distance, unlimited direct connect. With Verizon I was getting 400 anytime minutes for $40. Overall, VERY happy I made the switch.

3.0 out of 5 stars The best for Nextel users, August 14, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Motorola i830 Phone - Silver (Nextel) (Wireless Phone)
I rate this phone the best for a Nextel user due to it's slim size. I've had mine about a month and am really enjoying not having to strap a phone the size of a brick to my hip.

This phone is essentially a 730 slimmed down. It seems the space savings was achieved with a slimmer battery - because mine does need recharging about once per day.

I've used the 1000,85,95,73 and now this phone. I prefer a slimmer design over battery life. If you don't mind returning to a charger every so often you'll probably like it. If you are away from a power source and on the phone for a while you will need a spare battery or two. UPDATE 3-29-05: Still enjoy using this phone. The small size and solid construction has worked very well for me. If you're thinking Nextel and want a compact phone I'd definitely look at this model.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, October 18, 2004
This review is from: Motorola i830 Phone - Silver (Nextel) (Wireless Phone)
Traded the i730, AT LAST. I hated the size, it's about friggin time nextel offered a small color display phone. Motorola has made excellent tiny phones for years, and I finally get to combine it with Nextel service, which I wouldn't trade for anything. The browser is so useful I couldn't live without it, Biz Finder (I never call information), People Finder, movie times and flight arrivals, basically everything you could want out of a web browser for 10 bucks a month. And supposedly the GPS will actually work in this model (another 15 bucks a month), though I haven't tried it. And the "Address Book" is a convenience I become spoiled by. It keeps up to 5000 numbers in a searchable database that you create at Nextel.com and access through the browser (at a very reasonable speed). So far, the i830 is everything the 730 was just ALOT smaller. IT'S SO FRIGGIN TINY- FINALLY!!
