Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Building on the success of the small, pocket-friendly Motorola i830, the new i836 sports a sleek new design and added features like multimedia messaging and group connect technology that make this a must-have upgrade. If you like style that is perfectly fused with functionality, give the i836 a serious look. Plus, with Nextel's legendary Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology, speakerphone capability and a vibrant color screen, the i836 is the right tool for getting the job done.

Take a closer look at the i836's functions.
Design
With curved lines reminiscent of an Italian race car, this phone is certainly easy on the eyes. Like other Nextel phones, the i836 is built tough for construction and utilities industry users. In fact, it conforms to military standard 810F for blowing rain, humidity, and salt fog. That means it's designed to withstand exposure to rain, sleet, and snow. The case is built from a tough, durable plastic that resists scratches and scuffs better than the metal casing of the i830. The phone also features a large 130 x 130 TFT color display with 65,000 colors. Meanwhile, the outside cover features a supplementary monochrome display that can display time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. An attached cover protects the unit's USB data, handsfree headset, and charging ports. The phone's control pad also features a five-way button that can control most of the phone's functions. The phone's software features one-touch shortcuts to phone features and easy, icon-driven menus.

Calling Features
The i836's built-in address book can store up to 600 contacts for quick and easy management of phone numbers and email addresses. The phone comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones plus a vibrating alert and you can assign unique ring tones to contacts for audible notification and caller identification during incoming calls. More polyphonic ringtones can be added via the Nextel Online service. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. You can also speak numbers and control other phone features with the sound of your voice. Or, access the last 20 sent and received calls for quick call return or number storage via the recent calls list. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear, and there's even an "airplane mode" that allows you to turn off network connections while still using programs, games, voice record features, and the datebook. If you have an emergency, the i836's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.

One of the key features of any Nextel phone is support for Nextel's Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology. The i836 fully supports the service, which allows for one-touch conversations with anyone else on a Nextel phone, or with entire groups of Direct Connect users via group connect technology. It's like a having a CB radio with enough range to cover all of North America. The i836 also features a walkie-talkie private speaker button, which switches from the external speaker to the earpiece for private conversations or to minimize disruptions in quiet environments.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The i836 features MMS-based support for mobile-to-mobile or mobile-to-email text, graphics and sound messaging. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

Getting on the Internet anywhere is easy with the i836, as well. Nextel's optional Nextel Online package allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Nextel Online also features games, ringtones, realtime news and sports updates, virtual address books, and more-- all delivered to your Nextel phone.

The i836 ships with a datebook that lets you book meetings, plan events, and set alarms that will automatically turn on the phone if needed. You can store a phone number or Direct Connect ID and initiate a call from a datebook entry. There's also a voice recording application that can record phone conversations if you need to replay directions or meeting times. A time and date clock are included, as well.

Entertainment and Software
For those who want the i836 to match their tastes, the phone allows you to customize the idle screen with your choice of hundreds of available images. You can also download new wallpapers directly to your phone via the Nextel Online service.

The i836 is packed with a number of Java applications. Pre-loaded applications include Calculator, as well as TeleNav 2.3, an application that provides audible driving directions and takes advantage of the i836's GPS capability. 1KTV multimedia for wireless news reports is also included (both TeleNav and 1KTV require subscriptions). Meanwhile, games that ship with the i836 include demo versions of Jamdat bowling and Tetris. You can also download more games to the phone's 2MB of internal memory via the Nextel Online service.

Vital Statistics
The Motorola i836 weighs 3.6 ounces and measures 3.4 x 1.9 x .80 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 120 minutes of digital talk time, and up to 80 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the IDEN 800 frequency. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

2.0 out of 5 stars Worst Battery Life, July 20, 2005
This review is from: Motorola i836 Nextel iDen PTT rugged Gray cell phone (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I like the design features and everything in this phone but the battery life. As the previous reviewer said battery drops dead by the end of the day even if use it for just few minuts only. But the specifications says 80 hrs stand by time. It is not even lasting 40 hours as standby(No calls at all) let alone 80 hours. Don't buy this unless you want to charge it daily. If the battery life is like this in new phone I wonder how it would be after 1 year use. I strongly recommend aganist buying this phone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Run away from this phone & Nextel, July 21, 2006
This review is from: Motorola i836 Nextel iDen PTT rugged Gray cell phone (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I had 3 different i836's and all had the same problems. The phone looks great but it ends there. The battery life is short & the signal sucks - I went from an i205 that I had for 5 years - to the 836 which cut off 36% of my calls (according to Nextel's own records) - this phone is the worst phone I ever used - it goes from full signal (5 bars) to no service all day long - just back and forth. I use about 6000 minutes a month and I need a dependable phone and service provider. I wasted hours and hours arguing with Nextel and got nowhere. After 2 months of torture I cancelled my service with Sprint / Nextel they charged me $200 temination fee and refused to allow me to return the $100 i836. I went into Verizon, got a Kyocera phone and it works great. I'm paying more for my monthly service, but it just works - with no hassles. The i836 is now a $300 paperweight. I would rather stick needles in my eyes then deal with Sprint / Nextel again. What a way to treat a 9 year loyal customer Nextel. Way to go.......

4.0 out of 5 stars Small and standard, June 20, 2005
This review is from: Motorola i836 Nextel iDen PTT rugged Gray cell phone (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I have owned the i836 for about two weeks now. The good features of this phone are of course its size and weight. The software is basically identical to the i730 or i830. The aesthetics are the only apparent difference. The buttons for the DC, speaker toggle, and volume control are closer together than on the previous models due to the small size, so you may occasionally hit the wrong ones. My biggest complaint with this phone is the duration of the battery. I consider myself a moderate user (1 hour phone usage and DC combined per day) and my battery is always close to dead at the end of the day. A larger size battery may be available, but then the leather case supplied with the phone won't fit.

I am a former T-Mobile user and have had several of their phones, the last being the Motorola V600. I don't know if it is fair to compare the two, but the interface on the V600 is substantially easier to use. It seems to me that the interfaces on most Nextel phones are very basic and not particularly user friendly, including the i836. Also, there are no connectivity options, (bluetooth, etc) which is a minus for me. Altogether not bad, but don't build yourself up. This is just an i730 in a nicer case.
