Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

When you want to take your whole world with you, look no further than the Nextel i930. This Windows Mobile-powered smartphone (Windows Mobile for Smartphones 2003 Second Edition) is designed to keep you in touch in ways that few other phones can. It's got great features, too, like an SD memory card slot, support for international service, and a VGA camera. Add all that to Nextel's legendary Direct Connect walkie-talkie services, and you've got an indispensable mobile companion.

Design
The i930 is no ordinary clamshell. Like other Nextel phones, it's built tough for construction and utilities industry users. The phone sports a very large 176 x 220 TFT color display with 65,000 colors. Meanwhile, the outside cover features a supplementary color display that can show images, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The built-in camera and LED flash are located above this display.

A speakerphone unit is located on the rear of the phone, while the trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. The phone's control pad also features a five-way button that can control most of the phone's functions. A small button on the hinge of the phone's flip mechanism automatically opens the phone for quick access-- a real plus if you have your hands full. A standard headset jack and a USB-compatible data port are also provided.

As mentioned, the i930 sports a slot for an SD memory card so you can store music, games and other files on the removable memory, making it possible to take all the files you need with you.

Calling Features
The i930 has all the latest calling features folks have come to expect. The built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Vibrate modes and custom WAV and MP3 ringtones can also be set to your preferences so you know who is calling without having to look at the LCD. The included Pocket Outlook software features a contacts list that is cleverly integrated with the phone's dialing functions. The i870's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.

One of the key features of any Nextel phone is support for Nextel's Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology. The i930 fully supports the service, which allows for one-touch conversations with anyone else on a Nextel phone. It's like a having a CB radio with enough range to cover all of North America. The i930 also features a walkie-talkie private speaker button. This switches from the external speaker to the earpiece for private conversations or to minimize disruptions in quiet environments.

With the i930, Nextel has thought of those who travel frequently. Thanks to an integrated GSM radio, you can use the phone on international GSM networks with an optional Nextel Worldwide service plan. GSM-based data services can also be accessed when you travel in parts of North and South America, Europe, and Asia.

Messaging, Internet, and Tools
Designed as a complete solution for people who want to bring their office with them, the i930 comes packed with pocket versions of Outlook, Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger. In addition to keeping track of contacts, Pocket Outlook features integrated calendar and email functions. Email support is provided for IMAP and POP3 accounts, as well as corporate accounts. Microsoft's ActiveSync software keeps the device synced with all of your PC's Outlook information (via USB or infrared connection). Plus, with a Nextel Data Unlimited pack, you can get unlimited data transfers from the Nextel network -- great for those times when you want to connect your laptop or PDA to your i930 and surf the Web or check your email.

You can use the i930's built in Internet Explorer browser for downloads and mobile web browsing. Nextel's optional data packages allow you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. The service also features games, ringtones, realtime news and sports updates, virtual address books, and more-- all delivered to your Nextel phone. Traditional text messaging, as well as MMS-based video, picture and sound messaging are also supported by the phone. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the i930 including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, a calendar, a to-do list, and an alarm clock.

Imaging and Entertainment
The i930's VGA (640 x 480) still camera also features video capture capability and an LED flash for better performance in low-light situations. The inclusion of Windows Media Player on the i930 means that you can use the handset as an MP3 and video player, as well. The amount of music and video you can store is only limited by the memory available on the SD expansion card.

The phone is also compatible with a number of Java applications available from Nextel. Choose TeleNav for GPS-based audible driving directions or Mobile Locator for finding the location of a friend or loved-one's phone (both require a subscription). You can also take a break or organize your schedule with some included games and applications. More Windows Mobile game and application downloads are available from Nextel.

Vital Statistics
The Motorola i930 weighs 5.9 ounces and measures 3.46 x 1.93 x 1.18 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 168 minutes of digital talk time, and up to 95 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the IDEN 800 frequency, as well as the GSM 900/1800/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Nextel i930, May 14, 2006
By
This review is from: Motorola i930 iDen phone (Wireless Phone)
I have had my i930 for almost two months now. It does not have the newest version of Windows Mobile software since the phone has been in development for some time now. There are a whole lot of applications that you can obtain at handango.com. The wallpaper and ringtones from nextel.com will not work with this phone. Also, you can not send text messages with this phone. Receive, but not send. I purchased a 2gb smart card for my phone, and it is more than plenty. you can play mp3, wma, and even video on your phone. You can use a picture that you have taken and use that for your background. it also works with telenav, but unfortunately, weather.com's application isn't available yet. I miss using that with my old phone. You can make your own ring tones with this phone. The phone includes a disk and windows sync software along with a cradle to sync your phone with your pc. You can even access your bank account with the webbrowser on this phone as the encryption is high enough. It comes with Jawbreaker and Solitaire for the games. I like it a lot, but there are things that I miss about my old nextel phones.

i wanted to add that you can send text messages from the phone. You just have to use the MMS feature, and it has a spot where it says add photo, and you just send the text. So, you can't send an SMS message, just MMS.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stay with the i860 unless you need the internet., July 28, 2006
By
This review is from: Motorola i930 iDen phone (Wireless Phone)
I love this phone, but if I didn't use the internet a lot I would have stuck with my i860.

Pros:
-Internet Explorer (great for gmail)
-Sync with PC
-Windows Mobile
-Operation GPS
-TeleNav (free to mark GPS coordinates)
-Windows Media Player (Music, Video, Pics)
-Best Nextel on the Market
-Good keys
-Speaker Phone
-Headphone Outlet ($10 for the nextel headphone on eBay, great for music)
-Big operational external display
-Walkie-Talkie

Cons:
-Huge Phone (It's very thick.)
-No BLUETOOTH
-Poor Battery Life
-Windows warns low battery at about 1/3 battery life (thus making the battery life even shorter.)
-Windows Mobile (crashes sometimes.)
-Very Overpriced (considering a Motorola Q, Trio, or Blackberry)
-Heavy
-No Keyboard (if you want one)
-Only Using GSM out of the USA!! iDen is used in the US, which in only 2nd gen (slower).
-No Off-Network Walkie-Talkie
